  1. final chapter to my saga. Put the drive in my primary pc, noticed that I have been using Microsoft ide drivers all along. Made another successful Dual Layer burn. The scan is even slightly better than the first one. All default QSuite and ImgBurn settings. Bottom line, I either got a bad drive or the gcab firmware is a complete POS. Just glad it worked out, thanks guys, Max
  2. Just to follow up on my own thread here. I bought a replacement drive and right away flashed it with the BCDB firmware. Put the drive in my spare pc (dell 400sc). Burned the first dual layer disk successfully, 95% quality. Though the new firmware still only supports 2.4x writing, I am so happy to finally burn a DL disk. Used ImgBurn with all default settings (write mode DAO, aspi layer - SPTI). The pc uses microsoft ide drivers. Unfortunatelly DL disks are too expensive to really understand what my original problem was. Next step, I will put the replacement drive into my primary pc and see if it works. If it does, then the problem was either the flaky drive or the firmware. (all reported DL burns that I saw had been done with BCAB firmware, not GCAB) As a side note, I tried playing DVD in my two stand alone dvd players. I did not watch the entire movie, just browsed through the chapters and watched a little, but both players had no problems playing the disk. The players are Panasonic S35 and Panasonic RP91. thanks everybody for your help, Max
  3. recently bought I/O Magic oem of BENQ DW1655, fw GCAB. Have been burning regular single layer disks with great results. Not a single coaster so far. All burned disks were scanned with 95-97% results. Yesterday I tried to burn Verbatum DL+R MKM-001 disks at 2.4x. Made two tries, one with DVD decrypter, another with ImgBurn. Different sources, but both were iso images of the original disks made by dvd decrypter. Both times I got write errors little into the beginning of the second layer. One time at 50%, second at 51%. Used disks from different packages, just to make sure its not a bad source. One was from a bulk package of 20 with white labels, second was from retail package pf 3 from Staples. I have searched but could not find a similar issues resolved here. My suspicion is that I have a bad drive. Going to buy another drive to test. Here are a few details about my setup. Very stable NForce3 motherboard, nvidia ide drivers, DMA enabled. All latest versions of burning software. Burning using SPTI layer. Again no issues with single layer disks. From reading the forums and getting some replies in CDFreaks forums here are a few suggestions I got: 1.Change to MS ide drivers 2.Change SPTI to MS ASAPI aspi layer option 3.going into tools->settings->ISO write mode and selecting write type to packet instead of the SAO. 4.I saw posts in this forum that refers to Turning WOPC off, but since its an oem drive, I cant do it in OEM firmware, and cant crossflash, since there is no fw is available yet What do you guys think? Is it a bad drive, or should I play more with different settings? I would appreciate any suggestions. thanks, Max Below are the errors. I/O Error!
