  1. Actually, I'm creating an ISO file, not a .dvd file (Reason is, I like to load it in Daemon tools and play it to make sure the file is ok before burning. But it's a 1:1 iso, so I'm not sure why imgburn is asking for the layer break position. Perhaps it is just confirming the position? (I can't recall now if it gives me choices in this circumstance).
  2. I will sometimes create an ISO using clonecd (1:1 copy) for DL dvds, and then burn with imgburn (v.2.3.2), but I am curious about something. In imgburn, I will always the 'confirm layer break position' dialog box. A few days ago, that dialog indicated that the layber break was in a 'good' position (rather than excellent). Since clonecd is a 1:1 copy, does that mean that the original layer break was in a 'good' position rather than an excellent one? I guess what I am asking is, when I open a clonecd ISO with imgburn, is imgburn changing the layer break position?
  3. I followed the instructions on the imgburn 'change book type' screen and just wanted to say that they aren't entirely the same as the instructions here. At least not for someone like me who is not sure what she is doing, and follows instructions to the letter. When I go to Tools > Drive > Change Booktype > Advanced, the instructions say: "2. Type in the ID string of your drive as it is visible within the main program window. Each ID String should be on it's own line and with no leading/trailing spaces. Example: Drive OEM: Samsung [TSSTcorp] Drive ID String: SONY DVD RW DRU-830A" I select Samsung, and the two lines you have in the example are automatically included in the Drive ID Box, so I just pressed OK, thinking that indeed, BOTH lines exactly as they are in the example are what needed to be typed. After all, the instructions say that EACH ID STRING should be on it's own line, and technically, even though there is only one line in the example that includes the term 'ID string', I focussed more on the "it's own line" thinking that both lines had to be entered. I'm not sure that worked, but more on that in a sec. Next I tried the instructions posted in this thread. That is to say that in the the Drive ID box, I replaced what was there (those two lines from the example) with just SONY DVD RW DRU-830A and pressed OK. (I am including these details for others who may have the same issue). I have two questions: 1) I'm not sure where to look to see if it worked. In the ImgBurn Log I see that it found "1 DVD-ROM, 1 DVD+-RW and 1 DVD+-RW/RAM!" But on the right hand side (with a Verbatim +R DL disc in the drive, it says: SONY DVD RW DRU-830A SS20 (ATA) Current Profile: DVD+R DL and further down it says Physical Format Information (ADIP): Disc ID: MKM-001-00 Book Type: DVD+R DL What should I be looking at... the drive detected (DVD-ROM) or the book type of the dvd itself (DVD+R DL)? 2) And am I right in assuming that this change in booktype (assuming it worked) only applies if I burn with imgburn? In this one case, I wanted to burn with something else.
  4. r*3, Thanks for the heads-up. I'll check my player.
  5. Here's the skinny. I had a dual sided dvd, and created an iso for each. Then I had the bright idea of merging them to create one iso and burning to dl. previous post on merging 2 iso files The suggestion there was to pay $50 for DVDRemake. I tried the free version (that only exports the first 15 seconds of each chapter? Cell? whatever), but couldn't really tell if it would work on the whole film. Not taking the chance for that much money. So... I got VOBEdit and IFOEdit. Followed these instructions Digital Video Forums - Joining VOBs and then started over with these instructions Joining Double Sided dvds. Long story short, I now have a big ISO file, produced by Shrink from all these vob files, and imgburn tells me there is no layer break. So, I guess I have to add it manually. I've just spent the last few hours trying to figure out how to do it, and, well, I need help. Detailed help. I still have the Shrink produced ISO, and I also kept all the VOB files created using the processes above just in case I need to open them again in IFOEdit to do something. I read this thread where Ligntning UK! says: but I don't understand. Can someone please help? If it involves ifoedit, can you please provide details, ie exactly what I am to look for when I hope the ifo file (and which of the 2 ifo files I am to open), etc. Much appreciated.
  6. Thanks to everyone's suggestions. Especially Lightning UK! That is exactly what I was looking for. (Oh, those hidden little gems. And here I thought I had right-clicked on everything.)
  7. Is there some way of determining where the layer break is when viewing a dvd? I want to test the dvd to make sure it plays through the break ok, but I can't figure out how to get to the break. If I first open the disk with imgburn, it shows me where the break is in terms of sectors and %. But as far as I can tell, zoom player only displays time (elapsed and left) on the slide bar. I guess I would like to view sectors (I'm not quite sure what a sector is exactly, so if it turns out that wanting to view sectors during playback is a really stupid concept, then you're welcome for the good laugh!). And % doesn't seem to work, because I gather it's not a % of the film, but a % of the entire contents of the dvd including extras, etc. So... anyone have a trick? <edited a typo>
  8. Thought so. Darn. $50 or 10+ hours reading/learning how to do it... Hmmm.
  9. I looked here and in doom9 for info re the possiblity of merging 2 ISO files (well, MDS files, really) in order to create one DL dvd, but all I could find was LOTS of info on merging VOB or IFO files. Am I right in thinking that no-can-do with ISOs; that I have to create VOB files or IFO instead (am comfortable with ISOs but newbie to VOB & IFO stuff, so lots of reading ahead of me)? I've read lots of stuff on this procedure, and it sure seems time consuming, unless I dish out $50 bucks for software that merges quickly.
  10. Good news. The last 4 discs worked fine. That's 50-50 so far!
  11. As expected. Well, at least there is nothing in my logs that point to something in my hardware. Forgive my ignorance here, but are the bad discs just bad with movies? In other words, can I use these for data? (I already have some very pretty coasters for the cinema, and in any event, I am afraid these discs would harm the nice wood armrests)
  12. Media: Memorex (Ritek D01-01) Sony DVD RW DRU-710A Specs from CDRInf SONY DVD RW DRU-800A Specs from CDRInf 1) The first dvd burned ok, but received an error during verification, which I was able to ignore, and imgburn kept verifying in the background. I played the dvd back with PowerDVD, skipping to each chapter, and all seems fine. So this one isn't really a coaster, but that error worries me a bit. Burned on the DRU-710A Sorry--no log for this one. 2) The second dvd (of a different movie) was a coaster, burned on DRU-710A again. I received a write error (see log below). It was a MDS of a split ISO (split at 4GB with DVDD***er). [i split them so that they will fit as data on dvds in case DL doesn't work). The error: "Failed to write sectors 2495776 - 2795808 Write Error". 3) Tried it again for the same MDS file on the same drive. Wrote ok. Error during verification: "Failed to read sector 2503344 - Unrecovered Read Error". I played it back with PowerDVD, and playback froze at the 2h01 minute mark (the start of the 2nd layer perhaps?). 4) This time I got a single file MDS of the same movie (just in case file splitting was the issue), and tried burning on the DRU-800A. I received an I/O Error at 70% during the write process. No log for this but I copied the error box: "Invalid Address for write". "CDB: [bunch of numbers] Interpretation: Write (10) Sectors: 2554464-2554495 Sense Area [more numbers] Interpretation: Invalid Address for Write". Any advice would be much appreciated. And yes, I am expecting the ol' "use better media", and I will next time, but this was my first attempt at DL, and I wanted to 'test' with $4 dvds, not $8 just in case something else was at issue. __________________________ LOGS ___________________________ 2) I 13:33:21 ImgBurn Version 1.0.0.0 started!
