Getting error while trying to burn to certain drive

Seem to get a error when trying to write to my plextor 712uf usually right after the leadin. I have seen this check condition error before in Decryptor, seems still to be a problem with latest version of imgburn. I have tried to use Neros ASPI drivers and they get the same error as using SPTI drivers. I do not get any error with this drive using Nero to burn from this drive to same media (in fact have tried several different media). I am using the latest firmware for the drive. any clues on this issue?

thanks

p.s. Imgburn works fine with my external liteon 832.

Ignore the 'Check Condition' bit, that doesn't mean what you think it means!

The real error is the last one - for 'Sense Area'. In your case, 'Invalid Address for Write'.

For some reason your burner thinks burning to those sectors is invalid.

Does it still error out with that same message if you turn 'Test Mode' on?

btw, I just plugged my 712 in and it's burning as I type this.

Using TYG03 media.

Oh, can you also please post up the entire log of the burn, not just the error you get. It's often helpful to see the entire thing.

EDIT: Finished burning

Burns don't come a whole lot better than that!

Thanks for the quick reply Light..I will try it again and post the complete log. I have not tried test mode yet. I am using Firewire and not USB and am using a initio enclousure. I can not get to 8x on my usb so that is why I am using firewire for this drive (using laptop).

Another note when I tried DVD+R disk it errors but no error code is returned other than burned failed..and it does this about a quarter of the way of the burn not at the leadin. I am thinking it is something this enclosure ide controller is sending back to you that is the issue..maybe Nero just ignores it?

So the error code from DVD+R is 'No Additional Sense Information' ?

You really need to use SPTI for it to be of maximum help to me. That's what I use/work with day in, day out.

ASPI can sometimes give different results.

Just tried on a different bit of media...

http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?s=&show...indpost&p=11797

(helps add to the media test reviews anyway!)

Having said you use firewire, try on usb and see if you get the same errors - regardless of speed. I assume it is a usb 2.0 laptop? Must be I guess or you wouldn't even reach 1x!

My USB enclosure is just a ?17 job from SVP. It uses the Prolific PL-3507 chipset and I've flashed it with the latest firmware from the Prolific website.

Maybe a similar firmware update is available for your enclosures chipset?

No, test mode is only DVD-R/-RW (unless you have a benq).

Do you have any decent media to test with? Even with test mode enabled?

That 'Write Protect' error isn't one I've ever seen before in my life!

It shouldn't be possible... and that makes me think the drive is having problems with that media - or the enclosure is just making stuff up.

I do beleive that error is the disk..its very cheap..the liteon seems to like it.

But when I am trying DVD+R Ricoh JPNR01 it starts to write..then goes back to 0 speed and just sits there. If I turn off the drive i can get it to stop..here is the log so far..still sitting at 0 speed. These disks do write at 8x with this enclosure using Nero..I will try SPTI mode next.

The only real way you're going to know what's going on here it to snoop on the commands at a low level.

You'll need to see what's actually being submitted to the drive and where it's then not returning any values.

I take it I'm ok to assume the 'Buffer' is full when you're saying it's stuck? i.e. so it has the data, it's just not getting to the drive.

It could well just be a glitch in the enclosures firmware. They're not always as good as they should be - even though the enclosure being at fault is not something people generally think of!

Oh I think it probably is the enclosure but, just wonder why nero has no issues with it. Thanks for your time can you link me a url of a enclosure that you know works well with imgburn?

P.S. SPTI mode does the same thing as above.

That's where the low level snooping would come into play. You'd pretty much need to compare what's going on.

See the thing is, once it's started saying 'Writing Image' in the log, it has already sent X number of 'Write (10)' commands.

All it's then doing is repeating that process over and over and over again. For it to work once, it's silly for it to suddenly stop.

That's what makes it hard for me to figure out the problem without some real detective work.

When you use ASPI, you're missing out on all the important bits that you can only get with SPTI. Drive locking is an important one of those.

Nero's ASPI is just a wrapper for SPTI anyway so it's totally pointless using it over the real SPTI. You'd only adding an extra level of complexity and basically slowing things down!

If you had Adaptec's ASPI installed, that would be a different story. It's a REAL aspi layer and bypasses a load of the windows drivers so you get quite a direct route to the drive itself.

As for enclosures, I'm quite happy using my ?17 usb/firewire job from www.svp.co.uk

Just burnt 2 TYG02/G03 disc using it (combined with a Plextor 712) as can now be seen in the 'Drives and Media' forum.

Got excellent scans from both burns.

Oops, forgot about the whole 'external' thing!

No it won't find your drive then.

You really don't want to be using the Nero ASPI though, like I said, it works against you.

SPTI is the one that gets tested day in day out and has all the extra features. ElbyCDIO and Patin-Couffin both allow for the majority of extra features, if not all. The Nero ASPI doesn't get any of them.

Perhaps you overlooked me asking the question earlier, but have you looked for a firmware update for your enclosure? You will of course need to checkout the chipset it uses first.
