"Status: Incomplete" on TDK 8x ScratchProof DVD+R

Hi,

Most discs resulting from DVD ISO images burned with ImgBurn (version 1.1 and 1.2 tested) on "TDK-002-00" media (gray TDK DVD+R 8x ScratchProof) will fail to work properly. They will not be recognized within Windows Explorer, ImgBurn reads them with a "Status: Incomplete" and Nero InfoTool says "Disc status: Open, not finalized".

When the same image has been burned using Nero, however, the resulting disc is fine. Thus, it seems that ImgBurn has problems with those kind of blank media. Anybody aware of this?

Thanks.

I can't imagine for one second this is anything to do with those specific discs - certainly not from an ImgBurn point of view anyway.

If they're shown as DVD+R, it'll run all the DVD+R commands.

So basically, post your burn log so I can see what the drive thinks and therefore what ImgBurn thinks. It's probably a case of your drive not acting as a drive normally would when you're burning those discs. Again, the log will tell me more.

Oh and don't worry, if they're not closed you can easily do that manually via the Tools -> Drive -> Close function.

I have not saved the logs, however, I remember that the log did not include any mention about a problem. Is there any other information I can post that might give you useful information? The TDK ScratchProof DVD+R discs are the one and only ones where I observed the mentioned problems so far. However, as said, these problems only occured with ImgBurn but not with Nero, on the same system and burner. ImgBurn also had no problems when other DVD+R media have been used.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have already tried that, but without success. ImgBurn issued an error message saying there was an incomplete track on the disc.

You'd need to issue Close Track, then Close Disc.

That's the standard sequence for DVD+R.

Burn another one and just give me the log from that.

If that's not possible (are they very expensive?), put a blank in the drive and then copy + paste the info from the little window on the right when in ISO Write mode.

Thanks :)

Oh and just because Nero works, it doesn't mean there is an actual problem within ImgBurn. It just means Nero found the real problem (it is used by about 10 million more people!) and so added the workaround first ;)

Oops, forgot to say that if you do manage to do another burn, please press the F8 key before you start so that it enables all the extra debugging info.

Then you'll probably have to save the log to a file and attach it - rather than doing a copy + paste job.

EDIT: I actually have a couple of those disc... they're TDK-002-00 dye - yes?

I have a topic here with the TDK-003-00 dye, they all burnt + verified fine.

You'd need to issue Close Track, then Close Disc.
When I do Tools -> Drive -> Close -> Track (within Write mode), nothing happens. Trying Tools -> Drive -> Close -> Session, the burner gets busy for a while, but no message appears. Tools -> Drive -> Close -> Disc gives the following error message:

The info from the little window on the right (while the problematic disc is inserted) is:

Looks like the Close Track command just isn't doing its job then.

No error means it should be working - or at least according to your drive it is.

I would indeed expect the close disc to error out if close track hasn't been performed (AND worked!) beforehand.

Please do the F8 thing as mentioned above then try to close the track again. Same goes for close disc.

Save the log and attach it in your reply.

I believe Nero actually issues a 'Reserve Track' command before it burns on DVD+R, I do not (as according to the specs it's totally optional).

I did however add an option in so you could force ImgBurn to issue it.

That's about the only thing I can think of that may cause Nero to work and not ImgBurn.

That aside, it's the drives problem if it's not dealing with the close track command properly. I'd say a firmware update may help but the drive looks old now so there probably aren't any.

Someone else with the same drive / same problem.

Thanks, yes, my drive seems to have problems, but with other media it usually works fine. I am using the latest firmware and it seems that no new one will ever be released.

Can you try again with the log please and just click File -> Save As this time.

You'd cut out bits I needed to see. I knew it was going to be big, that's why I said to attach it rather than copy + paste.

As for the 'Reserve Track' option, it's named as such in the settings. Look on the 'Write' tab.

OK, I have used ImgBurn 1.1 (because of the resource eating problem with 1.2) which has no "DVD+R Reserve Track" checkbox. I have now noticed that new option in ImgBurn 1.2 and recognized

Added: Option to have the 'Reserve Track' command issued when burning DVD+R/+RW format media.

Normally it's just issued for DVD-R/-RW media.

from 1.2.0.0's Change log. I will try a new burn using 1.2.0.0 with the 'Reserve Track' checkbox enabled tomorrow (I hope) and see if that in fact solves the problem.

Regarding Disc closing, I have now been able to repair those discs that ImgBurn burnt "incomplete", using ImgBurn again :-)

Thanks a lot for the suggestion!

I am just wondering why nothing will be written into the Log Window per default (when not in Debug mode) regarding the successful Close Track and Close Disc. Also, no message pops up, so normally some will not be able to recognize a successful closing of a Disc.

There is no way for me to check if it has been successful or not really other than to see if the command was accepted or not. I can but take the drives word for it.

In your case, it WAS accepted and came back successful.

So basically, next time you burn, check it does actually say 'Closing Track...' and 'Closing Disc...' in the log.

If it does and you see no error, the commands have been issued and have both come back as being successful.

If it doesn't please send me the FULL log. By full I mean everything from start to finish, not your own custom copy + paste job.

Thanks.

In fact, the "DVD+R Reserve Track" checkbox (introduced in version 1.2.0.0 but disabled per default) MUST be enabled!

Thanks a lot for helping to fix the problem. I would suggest to have the "DVD+R Reserve Track" checkbox enabled per default in the next release of ImgBurn. I'm not sure if there are any situations where it would be useful not to have this feature enabled. If there are none, why not always have it enabled and to remove it to be optional at all.

I had some of the TDK Scratchproof discs to test from SVP - they worked ok for me..... Different media ID tho....
yes, yours were TDK 8x Scratch-Proof DVD-R and mine are TDK 8x Scratch-Proof DVD+R. As it turned out in this thread, the observed problems have been related to DVD+ media only.

BTW, I don't know what the results posted in the "Drives & Media" sub forum are good for (sorry). An explantation on how to reproduce and/or interprete them would be helpful.

Thanks.

drives and media ,just like it says different drives burning different media, look at the drive what media its burning then is the operation successfull, will it verify, namely a comparison of the burned disc against the original ISO file then theres the PI/PO tests if the errors are low and the graph is consistent then you have a good match between drive and media and will give you good results .The bottom line is get a great drive ,dont let your wallet decide for you then use Verbatim(mcc dye ) or Taiyo Yuden blanks and it will be a beautifull thing

If there would be a step-by-step HowTo for creating those reports, I would try to post such a report of the TDK 8x ScratchProof DVD+R [TDK-002-00] media on my drive.

Unfortunately, this was not really the fix. ImgBurn 1.2.0.0 once again produced a "Status: Incomplete" disc on the mentioned media, having "DVD+R Reserve Track" enabled. It seems that the problem is caused by the way ImgBurn is trying to close the Disc:

Wow, I've never seen a drive error out like that before.

I do not attempt to detect errors once the command has been submitted and 'polling' has begun - the polling is the 'test unit ready' stuff after the 'Close Track/Session' command.

The last 'test unit ready' pretty much sums it up though, your drive failed to finalise the disc and returned a generic 'Write Error' as the reason.

Whilst I can try to catch the errors during polling, there isn't much I can do if the drive can't finalise the disc.

If you look at when you tried it manually, you can see 2 close track/disc commands being issues.

The first tries to ensure the most compatible close possible, the second is like a fallback. The first is still erroring out with a 'Write Error'. That then seems to screw the disc up even more because the second errors out saying there is an incomplete track - which there can't have been as the first would have errored out in that way too.

What I really don't understand here is why you're happy to admit the program / drive burns all the other media ok and yet you continue to mess around with this combo when it quite obviously doesn't work properly!

The Nero log tells me nothing of any use... they're not meant to.

Because I have thought the problem has gone away by enabling "DVD+R Reserve Track". If I knew that these media could make problems, I would not have bought them, but now I still have some left which I don't want to throw away of course. Maybe the problem will disappear by reducing the write speed from 8x to 4x. I will try.

Thanks anyway for taking a look.

You may also find that if you can somehow burn slightly less you won't be on the outer edges of the media and then you might not get write errors when it's trying to write the lead out stuff.

The burn part itself has gone one, so if you can do that, you should be ok.

The commands I'm issuing are correct, it's just unlucky that your drive can actually perform the 'close' routines properly.

I'm going to look at catching the problems during polling sometime later on today... but again, I only hope this doesn't screw things up for other people!

I see, thanks for the suggestion.

Great, thank!

One weird thing is that when a manual try for closing an "Incomplete" DVD failed, it may succeed on a later try. The disc will then be fully recognized and works fine, but ImgBurn reads some strange properties from the "Last Recorded" Physical Format Informations:

If there would be a step-by-step HowTo for creating those reports, I would try to post such a report of the TDK 8x ScratchProof DVD+R [TDK-002-00] media on my drive.

OK, I have now figured out how to produce the reports and images found in the "Drives & Media" sub forum, on a DVD created via ImgBurn's Discovery Mode (although I'm sure an explantation would still be helpful for others). Should I post my results there?
