Illegal mode for this track error

I've been trying to make a backup image of a CD to my HDD, I keep getting an error message of Failed to Read Sector 193871 - Reason: Illegal Mode For This Track (log attached). Should I be saving it as an .img file or an .iso file, btw? (though both give the same error message). The CD isn't a professional one, could it be a bad recording? Though it works OK - all data can be read. If so, how can I get around this?

There's no log attached, so please attach it or post in a reply.

Hi - I did attach it (at leasr according to the forum form, though it took me 3 attempts to submit this - the first twice I just got a blank screen after I hit 'submit' and had to log in again). I will 'attach' it again, also here it is in inline text -

I assume you've tried it in your burner too?

Is the disc dirty/scratched at all?

No, it's perfectly clean and scratch free - also it works perfectly well (all the data is readable as 'data', though a PC will not normally try to read it as an image). I have also tried reading it in another [DVD] drive, but this gives the same result. I'm assuming that it's more likely to be a fault in the recording (as it was 'burnt' by a friend of mine, not supplied by a software company) than a program 'bug', if so does this mean that I can't make an image of the disk? If I had a CD and a 'burner' in my system I could try using Nero, but this will only make copies of CDs/DVDs in real time, not make backup images to a hard disk - and it might well also give the same error.

It probably would give the same error (or at least I would expect it to as it's coming from the drive rather than the program).

What happens if you ignore the error on that sector?

I get a 'save incomplete file?' message, then 'operation failed' and the program ends. Do you think I should try to burn a CD from the 'incomplete' file? I don't want to waste a CD-R, in fact I don't want to make any copies at all at the moment, I just want to be able to if this (or any other difficult to replace CDs) become unreadable, either through mechanical damage or some [unknown] wear out mechanisms. I have had this happen before, even though I look after CDs carefully.

Doh, I didn't even notice it was just the last sector on the disc!

Just ignore it by clicking 'ignore' or 'continue' at the prompt. (You must have clicked cancel if it asked you to save the incomplete file)

When in Read mode, what does ImgBurn say in the disc info panel on the right? Copy + paste it all please.

Look at the recorded side of the cd. If it's scratched or lightly damaged you can use a cleaner-wax made for car finishes to repair it. It takes a while but I've repaired many damaged discs using this method. Get a soft, clean dry cloth and wrap it onto your finger like you're going to do a spit-shine on a pair of boots. Liberally apply some of the cleaner wax to the tip of the cloth and work the damaged area in small circles. The wax will slowly remove the damaged area(s) that you are working on and the disc will read correctly. This will not work if your disc is too severly damaged however.

Now this may get you worried - I ran the program again to get the disc info as you requested, but as our 'server' was down I set it to save the image to the local drive - and it worked OK! (this is repeatable) So it appears this only happens when you try to back up over a network - though I can't see why this should make any difference, the network drive is mapped as drive 'H'. I'll try it later with some other CDs and let you know if it's specific to this CD, or is generic. Attached log file and disc info.

It created 2 files, 05053...bin (434MB) and 05053...cue (76 bytes) - do I need both to burn an image? Why are they bin files and not img or iso? Pardon my ignorance, I've only ever burnt files/folders (using Nero) before.

They're in CUE/BIN format because the contents of that disc couldn't be stored as an ISO standard image, which has a few limitations that the CUE/BIN format doesn't have, and yes, you do need to keep both files.

You used a different drive that time, I guess that's why it worked.

It's nothing to do with where you're saving the image.

I see now that the disc has been left 'open' too - hence the 2nd session and the discs 'Incomplete' status.

I was using a different hard drive to save the file to (on the same PC as opposed to over the local network) but I wouldn't have thought that this would make any difference - it failed (using 2 different CD drives) when I tried to save the image to H: (my network drive). Anyway, I have a solution - I leave it up to you as to whether you try to work out why this is happening.

Thanks for your help.

That log showed you using a machine with a single Sony burner (which is therefore what you used to read the disc), the other machine you used had a LiteOn CDROM and some other burner. Different drives have different ways of dealing with discs - especially unfinalised ones like the one you're trying to read.

I already knew/know that drives behave differently, hence why my initial response to you included my asking if you'd tried it in the other drive present on that machine.

Like I said, it's not related to where you're saving the image - period, end of story!
