johnwhelan Posted June 3, 2011 Share Posted June 3, 2011 Upstairs we have a traditional Teac CD player hooked up to an amplifier and traditional loud speakers. When I burn Classical CDs on my old XP machine on the Plextor IDE drive they play fine. CDs burnt on the new Win 7 machine with a SATA LG drive don't play on the Teac but do play on a portable CD player and on computers. The logs look the same to me by the way. Which internal SATA drives are best for burning CDs? Or did I forget to say some magic incantation on the Win 7 machine. Both machines are running the same latest version of the software. The interface or OS doesn't make a difference when it comes to Audio CD burning, by the way, just the burner itself, its firmware, write speed and the media you've used. Some that do read burned CDs still may me finicky with some dyes. You can visually see some have a greenish color or are silver, gold, or maybe some other. If you had luck in the past with burned CDs, try to use the same kind/brand and see if they works in your player. The media was Sony CD-R same batch in both cases. Is the log file saved by default somewhere or do I need to ruin another CD-R? I'd prefer not to as they are getting more difficult to obtain. The write speed was 4x on the LG and 8x on the Plextor. The CDs from both did play on two computers and a portable CD player but only the one from the Plextor played on the TEAC. I wouldn't have expected the operating system to make any difference. I used to use TDK CD-Rs, these days about all I can get in the high end are Sony CD-Rs. Both the Sony and the TDK CD-R media have been used for some years in the TEAC CD player without problems. The TEAC CD player is fairly high end and is more tolerant than previous CD players. Before the TEAC we used to keep two spare CD Players and found that some purchased CDs would play on on CD player or the other. I'm just after something that works and the simplest would seem to be to replace one of the LG drives with a more reliable one. This seems to be an option that isn't being talked about. Anyway for what it's worth the firmware was updated then another toaster was burnt. Note it does play correctly on a computer DVD drive. mmalves Posted June 5, 2011 Share Posted June 5, 2011 The reader device only cares about burn quality, i.e. readability of the disc, and the slowest burn speed doesn't necessarily mean the best burn quality, especially on newer burners which are better tuned for faster burns. That being said, media quality also plays an important part, and Sony CD-Rs should be fine (I also use them myself). If you really want to try the best, you could try finding Taiyo Yuden (also known as Victor JVC in some places) CD-R media. As for the burner, I don't think a new burner / different model would solve your problem, as it seems your Teac CD player that is being too picky about what it plays. Even though it probably isn't what you want, but have you thought about hooking a DVD player in place of the Teac CD player? My sister used to use an old Philips CD player hooked to her hi-fi and it didn't read any kind of burned disc, so I bought one of those small no-name chinese DVD players and the little bastard plays anything you throw at it, and in any format too Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It matches the rest of the fairly expensive Hi-Fi equipment and I'm very happy with it as it plays a wider range of purchased CDs than anything else I've had. Many of my CDs are from smaller publishers and their products can vary a bit so that isn't going to be changed. I can live with using the old machine as long as it holds up but I was hoping to be able to find a decent SATA drive and was looking for some one who had some knowledge on which where the better CD burners. I'm using a traditional CD player with a Philips CDM12 drive. http://www.dutchaudioclassics.nl/Philips_cdm12_cdm-Pro/ The Drive support red book and expect a red book CD. When I burn Classical CDs on my old XP machine on the Plextor IDE drive they play fine. CDs burnt on the new Win 7 machine with a SATA LG drive don't play on the Teac but do play on a portable CD player and on computers. It's about subchannel data. Given audio data, a Plextor firmware produce correct subchannel data. All drives play this CD. Given audio data, a LG firmware produce false subchannel data. Some drives dosn't play this CD. Write Audio CD at RAW mode at a LG drive. That way burn application produces correct sub channel data and sent data to CD writer. The CD writer firmware dosn't matter anymore. Depends how you look at it. I'm after a solution rather than a kit of parts that may or may not integrate together. The preference would be something reliable that ImgBurn works well with. It appears that Plextor now make a SATA drive which wasn't available when I built the machine so that might work. I note that Asus DRW-24B1ST has good reviews on Amazon.com and newegg.com. I think we can rule out anything in the log file as no one has commented on seeing anything unusual. Both machines are using default settings in ImgBurn so I suspect we can rule out an ImgBurn configuration setting. Unfortunately I suspect CD-R burning is a thing of the past for many people, "cdfreaks / cdrinfo drive reviews" have a lot of information in them but trying to pick out a reliable SATA internal CD burner seems similar to finding a needle in a haystack, great description of the needle but just where it is is another story.
