Invalid Address for Write

To those much smarter than myself...

Sorry for yet another thread based on a difficulty encountered when attempting to burn, but I feel that I have exhausted my own knowledge base at this point. I purchased an HP dm4t-2000 laptop 8 months ago. At that time, I was able to burn 60-75 dvd-r without issue using Windows 7, itunes, nero and imgburn. After emptying my external hard drive to discs, I took a hiatus from transferring to discs until about 2 weeks ago. Upon attempting to burn multiple sizes of files with multiple discs (verbatim, sony and even memorex cds) I was unable to initiate a burning session.

The drive is reading discs without issue, but will not write to a disc. I thought it may be a Windows 7 issue, but I have reformatted x2 with both the HP recovery disc and a stand-alone windows 7 home premium. I have also updated all the drivers for the drive and installed all of the Windows updates. (did not work before the updates after reformatting, nor after the updates.)

When using Nero, I get 'Invalid Block Address' errors; Nero Error (-1066) and (-1064). When using imgburn, I get the following error log:

W 22:15:58 Failed to Write Sectors 1056 - 1087 - Reason: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

It still looks like you have a driver issue there.

What controller is the drive attached to?

Right click the drive selection drop down box and pick 'Family Tree'. Close the prompt and then copy + paste the lines that were added to the log window so we can take a look.

Install the rapid storage tech drivers from here - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3409&DwnldID=20768&keyword=%22rapid%22&lang=eng

You want the 'STOR_allOS_10.8.0.1003.exe' file.

Thank you for your help...

I installed the above file, restarted, and tried to burn again. This time, the burning process proceeded through the 'Write LeadIn' phase, which it had not done prior to the installation. However, I attempted to burn directly from an external hard drive and received a 'Write(10) - Sectors 2112-2143' error. I thought maybe it was because it was directly from the external hard drive, so I moved the files to the desktop and tried again. Again, I had an error: 'Write (10) - Sectors 3872-3903'. Both times, my device buffer filled to 59% but no data was written to the discs before the error occurred.

Same difference there I'm afraid. The error from your drive (if there even was a real one in the first place) seems to be getting lost and you're getting a Windows error rather than a drive error.

Try burning in safemode and see if you have the same problem.

Again, received Write(10) error, sectors 1664-1695 in safemode.

Thanks for your help, any other ideas? Not really sure where to go from here...

Can you switch your controller into ATA/legacy mode rather than AHCI in the bios?

Do you have any filter drivers installed? Use the feature in the Tools menu to check - then copy + paste the info please.

It doesn't appear that I have any filters installed. I haven't installed any that I know of, and this is a fresh re-format from yesterday...

===============================================

Filter Driver Load Order - ImgBurn v2.5.6.0

Upper Device Filter: [None Found]

Upper Class Filter: [None Found]

Device: CD/DVD-ROM Device

Lower Class Filter: [None Found]

Lower Device Filter: [None Found]

And no, just tried to change the bios again, but I am unable to edit any features of the drive as far as I am aware..

Updated the bios and still not able to switch to ATA/Legacy. Uninstalled Norton Antivirus and completed all Windows 7 updates. Still no luck with burning any media. Anyone have any more thoughts/suggestions? I'm not sure what else to try.

Try inside the Mini Windows XP that's on Hiren's boot cd. You could also try it via a Linux (Ubuntu maybe) Live CD. You'd have to install 'Wine' so ImgBurn could run.

It might be worth you just getting a decent normal size SATA drive and a decent USB->SATA enclosure.

OK, so I booted from Hiren's and ran imgburn inside mini windows XP. At first, I just tried dragging the files on the desktop to create an image and tried burning it onto a CD. To my surprise and excitement, it actually worked! I thought we had figured out the problem. Here is the log:

Knowing that it was only a few kb that burned, I tried burning a DVD-R... and it did not work. This time, there was actually some data that was burned onto the disc (coaster); This is a relative improvement I guess, as before nothing was being transferred at all.

I'm encouraged that I don't think it's a hardware issue, seeing that some data is being transferred to the disc, it just seems that it only writes for a brief period of time and then there is a conflict. That being said, I have no idea what to do now. Any thoughts?

Seems we're going to disagree on this then :)

Failing to burn in Windows 7 (both normal and safemode) and Windows XP (from Hiren's Boot CD) using CDs and DVDs would lead me to conclude it *is* actually a hardware error.

Get yourself a normal drive and a USB enclosure. Don't buy another slimline one.

UGH. Well thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it. Any suggestions on a specific drive?
