Titleset Unable to Move Forward to Next Titleset - During DVD Playback

Recommended Posts

I was trying to create a DVD file structure from 6 MKV files using ConvertXtoDVD. After importing the MKV files into ConvertXtoDVD, each MKV file became a titleset in ConvertXtoDVD. There are a total of 6 titlesets therefore. When the conversion is completed, I used ImgBurn to to create a .iso file from the DVD file structure created by ConvertXtoDVD. After conversion to .iso file by ImgBurn, I wrote the .iso image to a DVD+R DL disc (disc label is maxwell but was told that it was actually RITEK-S04-66 as identified by ImgBurn as well in the log). When the DVD is successfully burnt by ImgBurn, I tried to play the DVD on my DVD recorder/players: Toshiba, Panasonic, the following issue was observed:

"the DVD playback was not able to advance forward from titleset 4 to titleset 5 (after completion of titleset 4 playback) but instead loop back to titleset 1. In order to view titleset 5, I would need to manually select tltleset 5 using the DVD menu. Same thing happens between titleset 5 and titleset 6 - the DVD playback was not able to advance forward from titleset 5 to titleset 6 (after completion of titleset 5 playback) but instead loop back to titleset 1. In order to view titleset 6, I would need to manually select tltleset 6 using the DVD menu. fyi: playback from titleset 1 to titleset 4 (inclusively) has no problem, the DVD playback was able to advance from titleset to another without looping back to titleset 1. "

I wonder what could have gone wrong during the burning process. Is it due to the DVD media disc I was using that I need to pick a better media like Verbatim; or some settings on Imgburn that I did not set correctly?

Appreciate help from anyone.

fyi: I have wasted a few disc when trying to figure out the issue, so would like to also know if there is a way I can test the .iso image on a software dvd player before I burn into a physical disc.

Output to an image file (ISO) and mount that ISO in a virtual drive program (something like Virtual CloneDrive). Then play the virtual disc with something like PowerDVD (a proper 'licensed' player, not VLC etc which could be cutting corners).

The disc burnt and verified ok so that's ImgBurn's job done and dusted. It's only burning what you give it.

Once you've tried it in PowerDVD you might find out if it's a generic issue with the files ConvertXtoDVD created or something else.

i did upgrade to 2.5.7.0 yesterday

I recreated the .iso image and used the virtual clonedrive to mount the .iso file. It brought up my Intervideo WinDVD application to play the file. The funny thing is that after completion of playback of one titleset, it always loop back to 1st titleset. It does not behave the same as I have played the disc on regular dvd player - as I have described earlier: that is: titleset 1 to titleset 4 are ok - they advance from one to another ok; only titleset 4 not able to advance to titleset 5; and titleset 5 not able to advance to titleset 6 - these titlesets 4 and 5 always loop back to titleset 1 and I have to manually re-select them via DVD player menu...

I hope I did select the correct media: DVD+R DL. The disc burner I was using is Iomega superslim DVD....

fyi - I only encountered problem in this particular case with multiple MKV files. I have used the same approach for other video file (MPEG), there is no issue - in these positive cases, there was only 1 MPEG file involved - file size is approx 25 GB, and it was successfully encoded into DVD files by ConvertXtoDVD, and burnt into DVD+R DL disc using imgburn. DVD+r DL brand is maxwell. All discs burnt (in the case of 1 MPEG file) were playable on all my DVD recorder/players: Panasonic, Toshiba...

here is their suggestion I got from vso forum:

{

There is something suspicious about the problem though. You said that play advances from one title to another, as it should for titles 1 - 4 but not from 4 to 5 or 5 to 6. In other words, the problem arises only for the titles written on the second layer. There might be something wrong in the IFO files which you can ask about iin the ImgBurn forum, the author of that program answers many posts.

They create the IFO files though, not me.

Your disc is 100% readable, as is the virtual drive image and yet it still doesn't play correctly.

Any chance you could give the trial version of PowerDVD 12 a go? Even 'media player classic - home cinema' might do the trick.

You're going to have to post up the IFO files so they can be examined - ideally, a set from what's on your hdd and a 2nd set from the burnt disc.

Further feedback I received from VSO - after sharing your feedback with them:

[

I thought they would say that. My only comment is that there is verify and then there is verify, verification methods vary between programs and may not duplicate how much trouble a player will have because players, both hardware and software, are set differently to try to read trouble spots on the disc.

The idea of having ImgBurn to create an ISO is good because it will probaby write layer break info in the ISO. Only the burn program can do that because it is the only one that knows the exact caoacity of the disc used. You should get the same result though that you already got playing the burned DVD with WinDVD which is a "proper" player if CX2D is at fault. A bad burn is again indicated if you don't get the same result.

My first thought was the same as that expressed on the ImgBurn forum, namely that CX2D might be writing wrong playback instructions in the IFO files for titles on the second layer, until you said you had other similar projects that worked fine but they used different source file types. There is absolutely no reason I know of that would cause CX2D to write different playback instructions depending on source file type, evry conversion could cause problems if that were the case. Conversions merely change whatever file you use to MPEG-2 format and write the resulting video in VOB files. The program doesn't know or care how those VOBs were generated when it writes IFO instructions, the main concern at that point about what is in the VOB is where chapter points are located and if there are subpictures with subtitles that need to be displayed. And I will point out that thousands of conversions are done with CX2D, surely some of them must have duplicated your case, but there have not been any reports of similar problems that I'm aware of.

So the only thing I can recommend now is to post on forums such as videohelp or doom9 where there are experts that can read the IFO files to see if there is anything wrong in them (VSO could do the same but they are busy getting ver 5 ready to release and will put your problem on the back burner). If they can't find anything anything wrong, that leaves a bad burn, which I believe is the problem and which can only be fixed by burning to better discs -- remember the comment on the videohelp page that said that Ritek quality tanks at the layer break.

some correction over the above findings: please see below:

I did mount the .iso file to the virtual clone drive as suggested by imgburn, it brought up my intervideo windvd player on the computer. I just re-verified it, the player was able to advance from one titleset to another. All 6 titlesets are good - each one advances to next one with no issue - no looping back to titleset 1. During my quick verification, I started with titleset 1, play it, and I drew the forward lever of the player to advance it near the end of titleset 1, and let it play normally till its completion and it advances to titleset 2. Did the same thing for titlesets 2, 3, 4 and 5....all behave normally with no looping back to titleset 1... It seems that ConvertXtoDVD is fine - the burning could be a problem.

Well if your player can't read the disc properly, you'll just have to try better discs or one of the other supported write speeds and hope your drive does a better job.

http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=8000

Passing Verify on the PC means the PC's optical drive can read the disc... so in theory WinDVD should be able to play what you've burnt too (and not just from the virtual drive).

i am not sure if disc/media is the issue though I am open to it... I did mention earlier that:

"fyi - I only encountered problem in this particular case with multiple MKV files. If disc/media is an issue, why would the project with 1 mpeg file works? it did involve writing to same type of DVD disc, DL; and I was using imgburn to burn it.. there was no issue. Issue only happenen to this multiple mkv files scenario...

I don't know where you think these problems are coming from but the ISO ImgBurn made (which you then mounted and played) is going to be no different to what goes on the disc when you burn directly. So if it worked in WinDVD, it seems to me that everything from both sides (ConvertXtoDVD and ImgBurn) is in order.

Pretty much the only thing left is the media you burnt the image to.

I can't answer/explain your 'why would this happen if this hasn't happened' type questions, that's something you need to figure out yourself by actually trying stuff - I'm giving you clues as to what you could/should be trying in order to narrow down the cause of your problem.

Does WinDVD play the disc (correctly) that your players do not play correctly? I did ask this question in my previous post.

i was just trying to narrow down where the issue could be. Hypothetically if the disc/media is an issue, then the scenario of the 1 mpeg file that had no issue makes it difficult to draw a definite conclusion that the disc/media i was using was in fact an issue. So it is just a hypothesis that I find it difficult to draw a conclusion on the cause of it.

One possibility that the vso forum constructively advised me is to try a different disc in the disc stack - perhaps due to bad quality discs which I have picked up from the stack. That, i will give another trial to see if it works. If it still does not, then I will leave this issue as it is as I am expecting another version of the same video - all contained in a 1 mpeg file in the near future - which I am very sure that this will not encounter the same issue that we are trying to figure out here...

As mentioned in my earlier post today that corrected my earlier findings, yes, the iso file was played correctly in sequential manner from titleset to titelset using windvd without looping back to titleset 1. The only exception is that when you tried to backward the disc to previous titleset or pick and choose titleset to play while other titleset is still playing; then there is this observation that at the completion of playback of the titleset that you moved backward to or you had just re-picked; the video will loop back to titleset 1. I was told that this exception is normal if you interrupt the sequential play as the player does not know what to do, it will return to the menu if there is one or stop when the end of the file is reached.

As for the burnt disc played on my dvd player - it behaves differently: as mentioned before: "the DVD playback was not able to advance forward from titleset 4 to titleset 5 (after completion of titleset 4 playback) but instead loop back to titleset 1. I keep seeing info about the mounted ISO being played in WinDVD and the burnt disc being played in the player, but that's not what I asked about.

I want to know if the disc you burnt plays ok in your computer via WinDVD. I'm not talking about the mounted ISO, I'm talking about the actual disc you burnt earlier.

The disc plays ok on the windvd....but the following is the latest I found which I have shared with vso forum. I don't think is a imgburn issue nor the convertXtoDVD issue as I have tested both iso file and burnt disc on windvd and they gave me the same results:

{

both iso file on windvd and burnt disc on physical dvd player behave the same way:

if the file or disc is played sequentially from start to beginning - the titleset was able to advance from one to another. That is if you do not interrupt the playback by selecting another titleset to play or try to skip forward or backward crossing titlesets; then is ok

However once you interrupted the playback by skipping forward or backward, especially crossing titlesets; the loop back to titleset 1 always happens after that. FYI: skipping forward or backward within the same titleset does not cause this problem

So my curiosity now is that is there a way to prevent this loopback from happening? What I would like is: to be able to skip forward or backward cross titlesets during playback; and still let the video run in the right sequence (ie. advancing from one titleset to the next) from where I have skpped to.

}

My understanding from vso forum is that is a normal DVD behavior on the loopback once you interrupt the sequential play.

I have asked in the vso forum to check if there is a way to prevent the looping back by having a simple menu generated during dvd file conversion. They suggest to test if a generated menu may help; and I have also shared with vso forum my latest findings based on my test on an iso file (with generated menu) as:

"even having a menu generated, once the playback of the titleset (which you have skipped forward or backward to) is completed, it will bring you back to the title menu of the titleset which you have just played. Again - this is not something I was looking for and I am not sure perhaps I am expecting something more than what the current standard DVD behavior is... As I am writing this, I recall that all hollywood movie dvd has the entire movie within one titelset - so the skipping backward/forward is ok, and the movie continues forward from where you had skipped to... However, I was trying to get my disc to behave in this similar way and we are dealing with crossing titlesets - so perhaps I am expecting something different from what the current standard DVD behavior is.

If this is so, my conclusion is: is neither a conversion or burning technical issue - but an expectation or a user requirement :) on a change on current standard behavior....
