My take on the crapware problem

Checkered Demon

Recommended Posts

Many, MANY users have complained about the latest ImgBurn install.  By default it installs a bunch of crapware and un-wanted software.  And Lightning UK have responded that there are opt outs for all of this software.  And this is indeed true.

However, the way the installation screens are worded, most users will inadvertently install some or all of this unwanted software.  Instead of using easy to use and clearly worded messages, Lightning UK have opted to use deceptive wording and non-standard opt out messages and procedures so that they will get paid more for users installing their product and the crapware that is inadvertently installed.  These are shady business practices at best.  Why they would want to trick their users into installing unwanted software is clear: MORE MONEY FOR THEM.

But in the long run, these types of practices will backfire and they will lose a significant portion of their revenue.  I can imagine that right now some clever programmer sees an opportunity to replace ImgBurn with his own product.  And his product will not make use of shady business practices that alienate his users.

And when that product is released, ImgBurn will crash and burn.  And this is exactly what they deserve....

-CD- Shame on you, Lightning UK!
