I/O Errors *ONLY* on DL Discs

DeathStalker

Recommended Posts

Same mfr (diff codes), but I get a LOT of L-EC Uncorrectable Errors on the DL discs - *never* on SL discs - almost always at ~99% of verify.

ImgBurn is the only program I know of that has the VERIFY function - anyone know of any others that I could use for a comparison?

I have tried different I/o interfaces, but still get the error.   :(

It is not "cheap" media either.

Thanks.

And yes, I have also tried 4x - same issues.  Not a firmware issue, as this is the only firmware for this model (this is Rev i, so v1.03 is not compatible)

If your discs don't have the MKM-003-00 MID, you aren't using the right discs.

Your drive (and its firmware) is doing a bad job of burning those 'MBIPG101-R10-65' ones, hence why the end of the disc is unreadable.

Don't mess with the hardware retry settings either, put it back on the default value (of not setting the hardware retry count).

Enabling OPC before write might be making things worse. Turn that back off again too.

Ok, so this makes things even more ....... interesting (more like a PAIN, but ....)

I decided to shell out for a Plextor (retail, not bulk) and got the PX-891SAW.

SAME issue.     :(

Could you explain what turning off the hardware retries does, and how that would not still result in a bad burn?

Very frustrated with this   :(

Thanks.

You aren't turning it off (so to speak), you just aren't modifying the drive's default behaviour.

It won't do a thing to the burn, just how the drive behaves when reading back the disc.

Have you bought some Verbatim 8x 'MKM-003-00' discs now? They're the only ones you should be using.

Ummm, sorry for being stone-dumb, but I'm still confused.  If the options don't change how the burn is done, and with them on it generates errors, doesn't turning them off just not notify you of those errors?  It would *still* be a bad burn, but you wouldn't know it.

Not sure how that distinguishes ImgBurn from all the other burner software that *doesn't* have a Verify option.

Thanks.

And no, I'm not spending the exorbitant $$$ for the MKM discs (at an average of $1.00US/disc, I can blow out 5 of these and STILL be saving money!)

You should be leaving the drive to performs as many retries as it wants to by default (i.e. after it has been switched on for the first time). By messing with that setting, you're changing how the drive does its job.

Discs will always have errors on them (you'll never get a perfect disc/burn) but the drive's internal error correction routines get around all that. It would appear yours is unable to do so once you've messed with the 'set hardware retries' option and that's when you (as a 'user') start seeing errors being reported.

Ok, so I even tried both the Plextor and the LiteOn iHAS124W - BOTH blew out the discs, and this was after I uninstalled and re-installed ImgBurn and set everything to default.

I tried running KProbe on the last fail and it basically stopped right after it started with only this info -
