I am transferring VHS video tapes to DVD using a Hauppauge Colossus capture card in my Hp xw4400 work station running Windows 7 SP1 then using DVD Styler to create menus and saving the project to a standard DVD format video_ts file. I then burn the files to DVD following the dual layer burning instructions downloaded from this forum using an internal Samsung SH-224 DB drive with the SB01 firmware onto Verbatim DVD+R DL (Singapore) MKM-001 disks (I'm new but I read a lot) All I get are coasters – typical log file attached. I also tried using the direct burn feature in DVD Styler and got a disk that will load and play layer 0 but not layer 1. I am also attaching the information from ImgBurn read mode sessions for both burn attempts, the first one is the ImgBurn attempt and includes the device family tree info, the second is for the DVD Styler burn attempt. After thoroughly researching on your forum I suspect I have a defective DVD burner (brand new) as I have uninstalled and re-installed the Windows drivers (cdrom.sys, GearAspiWDM.sys and PxHelp20.sys) and Windows has assured me these are the current drivers, Windows Compatibility Center assures me that the Samsung drive is compatible with Windows 7, and I have even opened and checked the drive lens. TellersDave Posted January 24, 2015 Author Share Posted January 24, 2015 Additional Information - I discovered that GearAspiWDM.sys is an iTunes driver and PxHelp20 is a Roxio driver and neither are required for the DVD drive to function. Both were disabled (using Autoruns by Mark Russinovich) and the computer was restarted and the device drivers checked to ensure that only cdrom.sys was installed. It turns out that I had fallen victim to the infamous "C?\" invalid registry entry problem. The majority of my invalid registry entries were created by Adobe products, Quicken, and last but not least - Roxio! I have completely removed Roxio from my machine and cleaned out all of the invalid registry entries. Now all of my DVD burners work perfectly including burns to Verbatim 8x MKM-003 discs from UAE. Interestingly, I could burn DVDs on my "old fashioned" IDE drive but not my SATA drives (SATA hard drives worked fine). Other users who experience problems with drives not working can check for this issue by using Windows Regedit to search the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE section of the registry for C?\ entries using the find function. These entries can be corrected by replacing the "?" with ":". If the invalid path (Data column) is part of an entry who's name (Name column) consists of thirty-two zeros then the entire entry may be deleted instead of corrected. Invariably these entries will be immediately followed by (in the same sub-key) another invalid (C?\) entry with a valid sub-key name. In my case there were several hundred of these invalid entries. I was able to export the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE section to a file and use Wordpad to do an automated find and replace. The file can then be imported back into the registry (ignore the error warning at the end of the import as you are only importing part of the registry) Of course, before doing any of this always create a restore point and make a back-up copy of your registry!
