Was the Malware Removed from 2.5.8.0?

Recommended Posts

ImgBurn is the best burning program which was why it was so sad the latest version 2.5.8.0 came bundled with malware. This wasn't just adware that you could choose to install- it was really malicious malware that was very difficult to remove (I finally managed to). I didn't see any option to not install it. Afterwards I managed to find an old version 2.5.7.0 and have been using that with no problems.

However according to Wikipedia "On 23 June 2016, the producer removed the adware component, and the software is now free and clean again." The reference isn't to the ImgBurn website though. Was this removal officially announced? The thing is, trust once squandered is very difficult to get back.

If this malware has in fact been removed from the installer, it would be good if there was an official pronouncement made somewhere on the ImgBurn website.

Even then I would be wary of installing 2.5.8.0, but I might give it a go.

The changelog still says:

Changed: No longer bundling/offering the Ask.com toolbar in the setup program, OpenCandy now handles product offerings during installation.

Opencandy is very nasty. I would need to see something on the ImgBurn site verifying that it has been removed before I would even think of attempting to install 2.5.8.0 again.

OpenCandy was never malware itself, it was just an advertising plugin / platform for 3rd party software within installation programs. It did what Google AdSense does for websites.

Anyway, it no longer exists. They shut their doors back at the end of June 2016 and so even if I was still using their plugin, it wouldn't be able to offer any 3rd party software.

Ah, so it seems I no longer need to shut off my Internet connection when running Freemake installers, then.  :)  Surely their servers wouldn't still be up if the company no longer exists.

Well, of course, Freemake can still always bundle other advertisers in itself so I should probably still keep doing what I'm doing.

Sweetlabs itself is still going, it's just the OpenCandy division that they shut down. They wanted to focus on other (mobile) things.

OpenCandys gone? Damn I used to love all those free offers and all the forum posts saying how good it was. How about bundling an alternative like perinstallcash or perinstallbucks... :dirol:
