DVD+R DL Burns Hanging on LB

OK.....techy person who has used Nero Recode in past. I've picked up ImgBurn and will be happy to contribute to the cause if I can get this working. I'm trying to burn DL (SL works fine) DVD disc using LG GSA-H55L (fiwmare 1.03) DVD+/-RW with FRY's Electronics RICOHJPN-D01-67 DVD+R DL discs. My issue is that the discs hang on what I think is the dual layer break at 1:16:51 into Apocalypto. I'm using/following the http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=1780 guide and the HDD VOB/TS files work if I use SL compressed to about 90%. My player is a Sony DVD DVP-NC85H/B Carousel player. I've tried different burn speeds down to 4X....and have tried in Nero Recode 2, DVDShrink with Nero Burining ROM, DVDFab with Nero, VSO and ImgBurn...all the same freeze. I'm now trying to focus on ImgBurn (like it alot since trying all this). I've burned 15+ discs with alot of combos of the above...all hang same place. Oddly my PC WMP11 will play thru this some times on the LG DVD Writer and always on the LG DVD-ROM drive. I don't think these are BAD discs since th error is same place....but wondering if my player does not like the DVD+R DL for compatiblity from a layer break standpoint ? Should I try DVD-R DL ? Also, I've selected the same layer break option presented to me in ImgBurn during build/burn.....don't know much about padding but should I go to the one before it and try ? I've tried combos of "seemless layer break" ON/OFF but so confused now not sure clearly what I may have missed.

Any ideas on what to try is greatly appreciated !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd have liked to see a successful Verify along with the burn. If you're running into problems that's the first thing to check... does it verify?

After that, you check the firmware is up-to-date on your drive.

and then finally you change to better discs - Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL (MKM-001-00 dye). You want the ones made in Singapore. Those made elsewhere do not appear to be such good quality.

My LG DVD Writer is up to date.....only about 3 months old...firmware latest too. I'm going back to FRYs tommorow to return these discs (FRYs Branded GQ but must be vendor Ricoh RICOHJPN-D01-67 per ImgBurn). Anyway, I could see disc quality not allowing a successful burn or bad spots....but since this is hanging on DL change.....literally exact time stamp moment....would the disc quality really cause this type failure ?

How do you know Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL is MKM-001-00 dye when looking at box ?

Also, any comments on DVD-R DL ?

Thanks !!!!

Well, last thing (variable) I tried is to set the layer break one item earlier in case there is some issue with little-to-no buffef before the change that perhaps my player is getting hung on...also went down to 2.4X. No luck, PC plays fine now........Sony DVD Player still hangs on LB. Any ideas ?

This was done with both ImgBurn "Seemless LB" On & Off....no diff.

Yes, the quality of the disc often prevents players getting past the layer jump point.

The errors on the disc normally rocket at this point and that's why the player gets stuck.

DVD-R DL are rubbish for anything except data really, keep clear of them.

You can tell which discs are verbatims by looking for 'Verbatim' and '2.4x' on the box. It'll also say 'Made in Singapore' or 'MIS' on it.

Of course you could always just buy them online? It's probably cheaper too.

Wow...thanks as author chimming in....really appreciate it !!!! Going back to FRYs tommorow to see if they'll take these discs back and credit me. I'll see if they have the Verbatim DVD+R DL Singapore there. Do you really burn them at 2.4X like the box says ?

Your comment on quality for LB holds true even when my PC using WMP11 does not hang on these discs and the Sony Player does ?

Also, should I install DVDInfo Pro ? Will it help tell me or show me if these discs are bad or have errors at the LB ?

BTW...really like ImgBurn. Soon as I get this all sorted out I'll contribute to the cause. I'm a longtime HTPC user.....many forum member.....think good software should be rewarded/promoted.

Wow...did a read on one of the discs that ImgBurn did that worked in WMP11.............

Is this what you mean by bad disc for LB ? Strange that WMP11 will run thru it

and ImGBurn sees errors and Sony Player hangs...normal ?

No, this is not a bad LB - it is a bad write. The drive can't read the disk. This is symptomatic of poor media. Do get the Verbatim, +R, 2.4x, MKM-001-00, Made in Singapore.

update your drive to 1.05 and the 8x should be ok.

you may also be able to burn them at 2.4 but the 2.4x MKM-001-00 only list as writeable @ 4x so perhaps the 8x ones are 4x and above only

the 2.4x should be 2.4x 4x according to firmware

the 8x ones are listed as 2.4x 4x 8x and 10x according to firmware

1.05 firmware

1.05

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi, great site, I'm learning a lot here, this is my first post:

Rather than taking the advice given here regarding Verbatim, I purchased some Matrix DVD9s for my first attempt at burning DL discs (I've been using ImgBurn sucessfully until now for DVD5 burning). Well, this seems to have been a mistake....I know, I know, I was warned. Anyway, they have the same ID as the discs the OP is having trouble with (RICOHJPN-D01-67) and coincidentally I'm having the same issue. Although the discs appeared to burn with no errors, verified and fiinished successfully, they're all hanging at the layer break during playback on my Sony DVD player, a Zenith DVD/VHS combo player as well as the drive the discs were burned on, a TSST Corp. TS-L632M in my HP laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium.

I'll now be sure to pick up some Verbatim discs.....based on everything I've read here, I'm fairly certain my problem is due to the cheap media I've chosen.

Thank you for all the helpful information, I hope to report back soon with more positive results.

Vin

Welcome to ImgBurn Forum. Sorry you had the bad experience with poor quality media Vin. I am sure you will be happy with the Verbs. Just remember to get the +R, 2.4x, MKM-001-00, Made in Singapore.

Regards

Thanks for the welcome blutach, I bought some Verbatim 8x DVD+R DLs (MKM-003-00, made in Singapore) on sale at Best Buy that thekochs alluded to and had my first successful DL burn! :) Not only did I not have a problem playing it back after the layer break, the transition to the second layer was barely noticeable. ImgBurn's best suggestion for the layer break was Good and SPLIP was Yes.....I have no idea what that means but I was under the impression that SPLIP=No is better?????

Anyway, the Verbatim worked flawlessly (I burned it at 2.4x) after having 5 failed attempts with the Matrix brand discs.

Thanks again,

Vin

SPLIP=yes means the playback will be seamless across the layer break (no pause). That is better. It seems most players support this. So, tick seamless on your DL burns.

Happy you got it working.
