We've got a via 6421 sata card and a dell PBDS DVD+RW DH-16W1S sata dvd drive. It seems there's a problem with either the card or the drive or both. We've got windows xp pro sp3. The drive functioned well in the beginning (I think before we updated to sp3.) We updated to the newest drivers for the card (from via) and updated the firmware for the drive. The firmware update gets to 100% but then seems to hang although I was able to exit. When I try to look at the drive properties in the Device Manager, it causes the program to become unresponsive and I have to use "End Task" to exit the Device Manager. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Ultra ATA Controller and made sure that the IDE cable is 80 socket. (The computer is a dell dimension XPS_R 2GHz with 512M ram. The bios DMA option is set to "Auto".
When I try to use Image Burn it hangs at the "writing lead-in". Sometimes it gives the message that there was an I/O error and sometimes that there was a DMA error. The media is CMC MAG AM3 (Staples).
