  1. I can only TEST or do multiple burns using DVD-R. The first log is of a test of a music dvd. Imgburn fails, Nero w/ verify passes, and Alcohol w/ verify passes. As for dual layer DVD's or .dvd images, I can't do such tests, so I just burn outright. Like I wrote, I get about 1 in 4 coasters. mmalves is probably right and this drive is finicky with AMD. I have two of these drives on separate AMD computers, and have the same problems. Prior to that I had an Intel Dual Core + Pioneer IDE and never had such a problem. That burner died, and I sold the Intel about a year ago.
  2. Why use ImgBurn then > ? I use imgburn only for dual layer .dvd images. Otherwise I avoid imgburn entirely and use Alcohol (hundreds of burns w/out a coaster). I used to use imgburn exclusively w/ an older Pioneer burner before it died out. I've been trying to find any alternative to burning .dvd images. Also, as for the clean install, that's installing imgburn with NO other programs and just the fresh IDE/SATA raid drivers. I've been trying to nail the problem to no avail. (I have multi-boot and all the OS images are backed up, so this isn't as cumbersome as it seems.) Anyway, thanks to both replies, but all the suggestions have been tried. Latest BIOS, latest firmware, AMD IDE/SATA drivers from gigabyte, catalyst drivers from ATI, ACHI, etc. Everytime I get a good burn and think I've solved it, another coaster will occur. The only alternative left is to either get a USB enclosure or use a PCI SATA card. As I have no PCI slots remaining, and the cost of a new burner would be the same as making it external, I'd just as soon purchase an PATA/IDE burner, and be done with it. Thanks anyway.
  3. I have two of these burners and they sporadically produce coasters, about 1 in 4 burns, when using imgburn, both on Verbatim, Sony or Fujitsu DVD+R DL's and/or DVD-R's media. I have tried burning both drives on fresh installs of XP SP3, Vista x86 SP2 and x64 SP2 ultimate; I have changed SATA cables, and tried different SATA ports; I've installed the latest ATI catalyst software for this GA-MA790GP-UD4H (AMD 790GX + SB750 Chipset ) motherboard and flashed the drive's firmware to 1.09; and I 've tried different I/O settings. No matter what I do, I'm still getting hit-and-miss burns. This only happens when using imgburn. I have no such problems with Alcohol, CloneDVD or Nero. I have only 2 SATA drives (a 1TB hard drive and this burner) and the SATA settings of the BIOS is set to IDE. Here are the two logs of my latest bad burns, one from a 1X DVD-R Verbatim burn (using default SPTI I/O) and a 1X Sony Dual Layer burn (using Patin-Couffin). 1X Verbatim: ; //****************************************\\ ; ImgBurn Version 2.4.4.0 - Log ; Monday, 13 July 2009, 12:38:31 ; \\****************************************// ; ; I 12:30:22 ImgBurn Version 2.4.4.0 started!
