If it burns and verifies in the laptop, the laptop drive MUST be able to read it ok - is ImgBurn set to eject the tray between burn / verify? (If not, what I've just said may not apply!)

 

I thought the same thing, which makes it all the more confusing. I think the drive must be going bad because the last three burns I've tried have made it at most 10% in and then given me something like the following:

What could be causing this? From that log, does it look like the drive is failing?

It seems the problem is related with your Read feature of the ROM drive. Are you using the same drive to burn and watch?

 

It looks like you hit the nail on the head. I tried three of the "broken" discs in a buddy's computer, and all of them worked fine. Any idea what I can do about that short of replacing the drive? If it was a desktop, even that wouldn't be a big deal, but it's more of a pain since the drive is in a laptop.

I've just started having this problem very recently: I burn and verify a DVD on quality media (Verbatim MCC-003-00), but when I put it pack into my computer, it says that the disc is blank. However, I just watched one of them that contained video last night in my set-top player and didn't have any problems. Why would my set-top player work better than my computer's drive? How can I tell if the problem is with my drive, the media, ImgBurn, or something else?

Make sure they're not fakes, try it at 4X it could just be your drive can't handle it.

I'm guessing that the problem was just that my drive can't handle 8x. The average burn rate when it was set to 8x was still less than 5x, so switching it to 4x hasn't really cost me any more time, and all of the burns at 4x have been OK. I can't tell how good because I can't get Nero CD-DVD Speed or DVDInfoPro to work on either of my machines, but hopefully I can find a friend with a drive that supports it so I can compare the Nexxtech's to the Verbatim's; that is when I'd be truly happy with the new media.

In my opinion you would be ok burning Verb Datalife Plus at 8x.

 

Using the MCC-003 Verbatims, I've done one burn and got one coaster. A 0% success rate so far isn't encouraging for such "fantastic" media.

If, for example, I have a movie backed up on a crappy Sony disc that skips and hangs in parts, if I rip it to an iso and then burn that on the Verbatims, should the movie work without those problems or would the skips and hangs come with the rip and thus also happen on the Verb's?

For some reason neither dvdinfopro nor Nero's CD-DVD speed tool will do the scans for me on my laptop and the DVD-ROM drive in my desktop doesn't support the feature. Since I can't find much help from the sites of either of those apps, any idea why the scans would just hang forever after I start them in both apps?

I read in one of the reviews on Newegg of those Verbatim's that the media id is MCC 003, which I found are supposed to be rated up to 8x. Should I only burn at 4x to be safe or should I be fine burning at 8x since these are such quality discs? How can I tell exactly how good the burn was? I always use the verify against the image feature in imgburn, but I've read posts where people were talking about "scans" of their discs. Does imgburn do this or do I need something like Nero's cd-dvd speed application? What are things to look for in these scans?

 

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on some of these discs!

Your posts seem to illustrate the classic and frustrating problems with cheap media - Patchy burns..... Some will be ok and others won't, if you use the links above you should be able to get A Grade media and hopefully avoid these problems.

 

Besides the discs (maybe it was just a dozen discs or so) from this one spindle, I've had at least a 95% success rate with these discs. I found the media ID (AML002) here under the 4th-class media section. The description on this site of these discs is:

 

Pathetic garbage media, landfill material, about 0-50% success rate. These discs are pretty much only suited for preventing drink cup rings from forming on a table. Most of the time, these are ready-made coasters. If you can actually get a burner to acknowledge the disc, do not expect much. And if the burn actually succeeds, do not be surprised if a DVD-ROM or player chokes on the disc (read/play errors). Cheap prices, cheap junk quality.

 

Although I have had very good success with burning and watching these discs, I am concerned about how long the discs will last. I would estimate I have somewhere around or over 1000 discs burned on this media, so it would be expensive both in terms of time and money to copy these over to some quality media (these discs? I can't find anything about the media's ID on the site). Would it be worth it? I would be devastated to lose everything I've burned. How long could I expect the 4th-grade and 1st-grade media to last?

Both are good and have excelent special sales events. Make sure you pick the DataLifePlus if you're buying Verbs.

 

A previous post mentioned making sure that the Verbatim's come from the MCC dye. When I search for verbatim dvd+r datalifeplus and get this page:

I can't find anything about MCC or the dye. Are these different but just as good or are they the same thing?

Hey illini4life where are you getting your discs from ? I would recommend a reputable online retailer that publishes the media ID of the discs your buying. As I am sure you know the name on the spindle (Sony, Memorex etc) means squat when compared to the media ID or the makers of the dye to put it another way.

 

Try and get Taiyo Yuden discs (TYG02 or TYG03) or Verbs with the (MCC) dye.

 

I get them from Circuit City. I know they're cheap, but like I said before, I've tried several different brands and these are the only ones that seem(ed) to work for me. I opened up another spindle of the same type of DVD+R's and haven't had any problems with ten burns.

 

I tried searching for something like "verbatim mcc" on Google, but wasn't too sure about any of the results. Could you recommend a good retailer?

Sorry to be flooding the message board, but where could I look for a driver update? The info I've found on various websites says that since I have an OEM drive that came with my notebook, I have to go through the vendor. In this case, I have a Compaq Presario R4000, but the website only has a driver update for a different drive; I can't find firmware for mine anywhere.

Also, your drive may be on the way out. It's getting a bit long in the tooth. But LG make great drives and I have a 4081B that's still going strong.

Exactly, that's my point.

 

Your drive is not initialising the disc properly and so is reporting utter nonsense to ImgBurn.

 

ImgBurn can only act on what it is told by the drive. So if the drive says it's a DVD+RW disc and it hasn't been formatted, ImgBurn will prompt you to format it.

 

Thanks for everyone's help. I'll try updating my firmware and trying another spindle of these DVD's. If that doesn't help, I'll pick up some Verbatims, but I've tried those as well as many other DVD's that are supposed to be quality and had no luck. This problem surprised me because I've been using ImgBurn 2.1 for months, the same type of DVD's for a year, and haven't had any hardware or software changes. We'll see what happens.

this is garbage media like Spinner says ,what strange write speeds .5x 1.3,3.1

 

I'll try upgrading the drive's firmware if I can. I've burned hundreds of DVD's with these discs because they are the only one's that I've found work consistently well with my drive; maybe I just have a bad spindle but I doubt it. The burn speeds definitely are not those listed above. When things are working they are usually reported by ImgBurn to be something like 1x, 2x, 2.4x, and 4x, IIRC. It's also +R and not +RW, so that's also quite bizarre. In my last thread, you can see that I was having ImgBurn tell me that the disc needed reformatting, which should only happen on RW material, which this is not.

It just happened again, but this time the tray did cycle. Sorry for not posting it, but I didn't see anything interesting. It just won't verify at a speed higher than 0.1x. Also, I reverted back to 2.0 thinking that it was a problem with 2.1, but it's still happening.

I have had this problem happen at least thrice in the past two days: I have ImgBurn set to cycle the tray before the verification, which it almost always does. The problem with the two or three times to which I'm referring are that not only does ImgBurn not cycle the tray, but when the verification starts, it goes at a rate slower than 0.0x. I can see that it is verifying because the number of sectors slowly increases, but it never goes past 0.0x or 1% completed.

Is it just with RW discs or maybe just the one you have tried, as I have had a few RW that do not behave and tell me that i need to format / erase, when i know fine well it had been prepared etc, I had to bin them and use another one.

 

The funny thing is that it is doing this with -R discs, so they definitely don't need formatting. I'll try searching through my logs and see if I can find one for one of these cases. I'll be 100% sure to post a log here if it happens again.

What is the error ?

 

Maybe think about unticking delete image for the time being.

 

Also think about checking power options in control panel and also looking at the bios in case you altered something in there.

Look to see if you ticked hibernation in power management or changed how it shuts down when power button is pressed etc and if you have got it set up to ask for pass on resume.

 

Have you changed from a PS2 keybd/mouse to Usb keybd/mouse recently ?

 

The error is not that it shuts down instead of going into standby mode. If I had it set to standby/shut down when done, when I would come back the ISO would be gone as if it burned successfully but the disc comes up as 'blank but needs formatting' [paraphrased] in imgBurn.

 

I now have had a new issue with this. I unchecked shut down/standby and just locked my computer while I was gone and it was burning, and when I returned, the same error had happened again.

 

I guess I'll just have to uncheck 'delete image' for now.

 

I haven't changed my keyboard or mouse configuration; I'm still using the keyboard and touchpad built into my laptop.

 

The power management and BIOS look OK.

The last half-dozen times I've set imgburn to "shutdown computer" upon completion, in my case go into standby mode, there is an error. I come back and imgburn tells me the disc is blank but needs formatting. I have "delete image" selected, so every time I've had to recreate the .iso file. This feature used to work without any problems. I have not changed anything recently on my machine or OS.
