  1. Well, just reporting back on a closed case. I have since updated my OS to WinXP ServicePack2, I've only ever had a clean install of WinXP before because I could never find a patch for SP2 (but I finaly did)... anyway! I also baught and found a good supplier for future purchases of 16x DVD-R Verbatim (YaiyoYuden) discs and my first batch came. On a clean install of everything (XP, XP SP2, ALL MY PROGS', LATEST DRIVE FIRMWARE etc), my burns are now successful. Though I'm still not 100% sure what was causing all my troubles, whilst I wasn't using the best media, it certainly wasn't the worst, so should have still burned. Was it because I never updated XP? do the service packs have better support for my drive? well, it works now anyway. Just a quick question now, when burning at 6x, is it normal for (TY) Verbatims to occassionaly drop to about 5.3x ? also, my device buffer jumps around 90% to and from 94% and 87%, I'm sure this is fine though I just want to see if anyone can confirm this for me. Thanks

  3. Hi, I've uninstalled 'Intel Application Accelerator' and now ImgBurn shows my drive as ATA. Also removed all aspi layers. I burned two successful Taiyo Yuden discs, though the first one showed a single write failure but carried on after to complete the write successfully and it varified. I 14:25:45 Writing Image... 4. Computer was top speck in 2001 PSU was replaced in 2003 with a 350wat silent one so it's upto the job. Think maybe I need another case fan at front, but I don't think it would be an overheating issue anyway. I think maybe I just have a touchy drive. Gonna install a correct aspi layer just for the sake. Will install Nero too, as I haven't yet on this fresh install of XP. I have just burnt 3 SONY16D1 discs with no problem, maybe the new firmware did the trick, though it's done this many times, worked on a good run then just given up. Will report back.
  5. Hi, ATAPI? My motherboard is genuine Intel (D845HV) with primary and secondary ide channels, I have the latest bios and chipset drivers (though they are old as support for this motherboads has stopped). They are just left as is after installing OS and the intel drivers, so I don't think it's anything I've changed. Intel Application Accelerator reports the following. Intel? Also I tested another Taiyo Yuden disc and it burned perfect though I don't know if this is one of the times when it works as I don't want to waste all my discs on loads of tests. Though at 6x it did fluctuate down to 5.4x occasionally, is this normal. Many thanks
  6. Hi everyone, My setup is as follows OS: WinXP (No updates) Processor: Pentium4 1.7GH RAM: 768MB SDRAM HDD: 130GB Seagate Barracuda (Primary Master) DMA5 DVDWriter: Plextor PX-755A (1.06 Latest Firmware) (Secondary Master) DMA4 When I first got my drive (Firmware 1.05) I was burning perfectly with TDK 16x DVD-R discs, must have burnt about 100 films. Then all of a sudden the writing speed started to drop halfway through to 0.0x and stalled the entire computer. When this happend it always needed a re-start to get anything going again. This kept happening on random burns. Then after re-installing win xp, this changed to write failures on about half the discs I used. I tried a few Taiyo Yuden unbranded 16x DVD-R and I still got a good few Failed To Write sector ??? errors. I've been using Sony 8x DVD-R (SONY08D1) recently and the problem still continues. Now before every burn I disable the internet and close everything, defrag and delete all temp files. I never touch the comp when burning too. Occassionally I uninstall the drive from the OS and re-boot allowing it to find it again. Though I still get many Write Failures that seem very arbitrary and I can't figure out what it is. Also note that NERO never failed a single burn no matter what I had going or what disc I used. I have just today, bought some new Sony 16x DVD-R discs (SONY16D1) Made in Taiwan and updated my firmware to 1.06 from official Plextor Site. ...and now, I am having a new problem. The log will follow, but note that now, the second buffer peaks at 90% and flickers around 84% to 90% and before the Firmware update and disc change, it used to peak at about 100% and flicker close by. This is with no programs going and about 6 Critical Services running in background that can't be stopped. Fresh defrag and 90GB free on hdd still. Oh yeah I always burn at either 4x or 6x.
