Blank, burnt or pressed. Using ImgBurn's software control or the drive's eject button does nothing. The drive remains dead with no attempt to spin up, had tried it half-a-dozen times one day with a pressed disc then tried IsoBuster which spun straight up. That's been my experience since as well. Seems to happen most often if someone else has logged in before me and has remained logged in thanks to fast user switching. edit: If I'm the first one to log in it rarely happens. If others are logged in it pretty much always happens. I've found though that I can use the button or ImgBurn's control; if I log out of all other users, log out myself and relogin - I'm assuming the drive gets exclusively locked by another account and IsoBuster releases this somehow without having to log out the other users.

What I do when that happens is open and close the tray using IsoBuster's eject/load control (sometimes takes a couple of goes to spin up the drive). Then switch back to the app that wasn't recognising a disc in the drive. Saves having to restart which was the only other way around it I found. YMMV

Hmm, burnt two backups without errors since chkdsk, the third disc though is getting the same old miscompare errors, is there a rule of thumb to how many errors could be deemed acceptable seeing as DVD video playback isn't absolutely reliant on the data being correct? Thanks dontasciime, I haven't chkdsk'ed in a while, it picked up some errors on C:, none on D:. Created another image on D: and this time it only has the changes ImgBurn makes to the ifo and bup files, so the same behaviour as the image previously built on C: (though not the same md5).

Something odd for sure. Had another try at pinning down the culprit: ripped another DVD to C: (ATA), built iso image on C: (the last few burns have all been from C:) & mounted to Daemon Tools, built another iso image on D: (SATA), binary comparison of iso on C: to source files only miscompares were VIDEO_TS.BUP and VIDEO_TS.IFO - which is expected, comparing the iso on D: to the source files resulted in an additional 3 miscompared files (VTS_01_2, 3 & 4). Did another extended scan of my drives with SeaTools diagnostics, both drives passed. I upgraded SPTD.SYS to 1.45 beta, compared iso on D: again with the same result as the first. Bit late at night to be nutting this out but here goes. The situation: I am getting one to a few errors on every burn lately, I don't normally verify but a disc that had playback issues got me back in the habit. I checked that disc with ImgBurn's verify option without an *.iso file and it read fine. I recently got a new spindle of 16x MCC Verbatim DVD+R media, last 250 or so were 8x (recognised as 12x), I always burn at 8x. The first disc I noticed playback problems on was from this new spindle. I got a Pioneer DVR-112D to replace my trusty LG 4163B as I initially thought it might be getting a little tired. Same verification issues when using build mode cropped up. Am now using 112L firmware to see if there was an improvement and to regain -ROM bitsetting for +R SL but the issue remains. My backups are from RipIt4Me compressed with DVD Rebuilder 0.98.2 with HCenc 0.20. My system is stable - have run 20 hours of large fft's in Orthos and 80 iterations of test 5 in Memtest86+. HDDs have passed SeaTools diagnostics. Normally I just build from the VIDEO_TS output from DVD Rebuilder, so I didn't have an *.iso to compare.
