The memory was faulty. The first memory IC should have some internal damage (which is quite interesting with Infineon chips, but anyway). The PC now operates with 256 MB of RAM while I get a new PC (or a laptop). I am not really happy with it, but I can do nothing. Th think about that I have wasted more than 10 Verba DVD's (3 DL) till checked the memory, I feel like a fool.

Thx, I had the same idea. That and your quick reply made me run the tests... and it turnded out that for sure there is some memory-affected problem with this PC. I have been trying this pc with more memory, and it seems that it lacks power. I am running the test one module removed, lets see what we can do. Unfortunately the larger modul seemed faulty in the test but I hope it's more a power problem with the memory (but, sadly, the pattern quite contradicts that). In 8 hours it shown that the error pattern was always 20000000 and the error occurred in low memory range (in several places, more that one time a row in several cases), between 10MB and 30 MB...

I have written an image yesterday with my new burner (you may remember, that I have to replace my old writer a few days ago), and a verification error occured. It seems that a bit error occurred (which is strange, since the coding on the disc should be able to correct several bit errors, and the additional CRC should be able detect more bit errors. But it looks like a single bit error occured, which were undetected by both the bit coding and the CRC, moreover with that bit error the disc still had the same MD5 hash as the image (with different data on it)... That's a lot to expect from USB to USB. I use a USB HDD to rip to and then to burn from to my tower and I have verify problems most of the time. Can you mount one of the devices in your machine? Sadly no. I bought an external burner, because my current drive is mounted vertically, and I suppose it's not for the best... The USB HDD is a laptop IDE drive and cannot be mounted either my PC or my laptop. Anyway since I have this external drive, I'll try to burn some discs with my laptop as well (it could even be better with it than with the PC, since the PC is a 5 year old P4 2GHz DELL Optiplex and the laptop is a DualCore 2GHz Lenovo T60) AE PS. I have killed an another disc with the burner, but the disc should be defect... There was a 'ring' in the written area, and the verify failed. It looked weird, like some old (disc) hardware based copy protection. I think this cube of Verba discs is fake...

4x. The image I wrote was from a USB HDD to this USB burner... Sadly the burner does not have 6x mode (at least DVDBurn did not want to write so when I selected) just 4x and 8x. The USB EHCI controller does not seem to be able to read and write 2 channels simultaneously at ~11.000 KB/s... Below are the 8x write details. AE

I've bought the LG writer. I'm just done with the first write (not a discovery, an image write) pasting the PIPO images below. Since the drive cannot produce PIPO scan the scans were made by the old writer. AE

I'm thinking in buying a new drive. I have two drives in mind: LG E60L PX 810US Both are external, but the Plex one costs around double. Do anyone have experience with any of the above? AE

The graph does not seem 'perfect'. It looks like there *is* something around that head-position. AE :edit: for second thought it is not... it's around 15%

The TDK works fine. I feel like a stupid... Is my drive bad or what??? I'm getting angry. AE

I think if it fails in the same place, it should not be the pack of Verba discs that were defect. Anyway the screachy sound coming out from the drive during spinup is not reassuring... It sounds like the disc is not fixed right during spinup, or placed eccentric and drive slows down and release the disc for a moment to correct the placement... The veird sound effect is produced only after I put the disc into the drive, but not when the drive is opened and closed before the verify process. AE

Damn... I still have problems 2 successful writes, and the very same defect again. Verify error at ~8%... I think the head moving spindle (it that the right term?) should be defect. It seems I have to get rid of the writer... I'll have a try with an another disc (TDK), if it gives the same problem... AE

I have teared up the pc's top yesterday, and cleaned it through. Disassembled the DVD writer and blown out a half bucket of dust resting there. After a half-an-hour cleaning tested the drive with the new US09 firmware on the next disc and it worked like newer before... Apart from joking: after cleaning the drive, updating the firmware and burning the 2nd next disc in the box, it went without problems. I do not really know whether some discs were faulty or the firmware was outdated, but cleaning the drive is never useless... I should have done it before crying AE

One more questions... Can I verify a Discovery disc in an another drive? I know that it only contains zeros, but I need an image to verify the disc to, which is dinamically created by ImgBurn during the write process. Can I create the same 'discovery' ISO as well with ImgBurn? If not, can someone send it attached (I think the iso zipped should not be too big) AE

I have tried the device query tool found in the firmware webpage which identified the drive right, the update for the file is right (at least it seems so), I could re-flash the drive with the US08 firmware, but at the end, I could not update the drive to US09 with the new 'One Click' integrated firmware update utility. AE edit: BTW the firmware page specifies the update as 'Windows Vista Support' which is unneeded in my case since I am using XPSP2.

Remove any disc from the burner, close the tray, apply the latest firmware available (US09) then reboot your computer. Also try burning at other speeds. As a last resort, you might want to use a cleaning disc on that burner. Have you tried DVD+Rs? As for those ~10 burnt discs, if you had Verify enabled when your burnt them, and they passed the verify process, then they're fine and you don't need to worry about them. Sadly I do not know what to do with the lastest firmware... All the linked files but the last are normal .bin files which could be applied with the flash utility, but the last one seems that the flash utlity has been integrated with the bin file (assumed by it's size). However the flash utility does not recognize the drive, or some other error occured, because there is no option in the utility to update the DVD... screenshot attached. AE

Tomorrow I'll try the next disc in my office PC at work, lets see what an another drive says... Anyhow, I'm waiting for any comments. AE

My last 2 writes went wrong on the verify at ~8-10%, so I have decided to make a Disocery run. The log can be found below. Could my drive crashed or I had just got a crapy pile (or fake) discs... AE PS.: I have already written ~10 discs from this pack without errors. Sadly I do not have the sources to re-verify them... PS2: I'm using the drive (the whole pc) standing in vertical position (the writer is standing vertically to), because I don't have space to put the machine right on its base... It is an office pc however (DELL Optiplex), so it has standings on it' left side, which is the 'bottom' of the machine now.
