Files written w/ IMB won't play in any player

Greetings... I guess the first thing I should get out the way is that I am a newbie to the function of converting, creating and writing files to DVD's so I'm asking for your patience for my ignorance...

The situation is this, I've read the guides and have gone over many posts with hopes that I could figure this out myself... Unfortunately I'm not having any luck... I'm trying to take a movie file of which some are .avi, mpeg4, etc. I've probably wasted about 50 discs trying to build and write these files to watch... I've had some luck with a few burns playing in my players and my logs say that I have done everything successfully (including the ones that my players won't read)... Due to the amount of waste I decided to go to RW's to do the initial write and if it plays correctly I can transfer over to a regular disc through a disc to disc copy (nero)...

The last movie I tried to work with was originally converted to an .avi file... when I used the build function and burned the disc w/ no success I converted it with prism video converted which I believed converted it to mpeg4, tried using that file in IMG again with no luck...

I'm thinking if I could get a clear understanding as to what type of file I need to convert to that would play in any old/new standard dvd player should be I could stop wasting disc as well as to stop continuously redoing the project on the RW. Here is a copy of the log made using the file converted from .avi to mpeg4... Any help is appreciated and please don't be too vague in your explanations because as I said your dealing with a dummy at this point in time...

Build mode doesn't convert anything. If you want the disc to be playable on a DVD Video player then you need to convert your AVI file into the proper DVD Video format (i.e. a VIDEO_TS folder full of IFO/BUP/VOB files).

Thank you Lightning UK... I've tried using IMG to burn the disc with these type of files and it still didn't work in any of the players so for that reason I thought the .vob extensions were not supported through the IMG Build...

So what does it mean when I load a .avi file into the build area and it asks to change it from the ISO96660/UDF to the ISO9660/Joilet file? I've tried it both ways yes and no to this question and my players still come up with ERROR check Disc warning...

I've been trying to convert with "Free Studio (DVDSoft)" It seems to convert the file as follows: DVD NTC STANDARD QUALITY (MPEG2, 4.5 Mbit 29.97 fps, 720x480, Audio - 192 Kbit Stereo) I've tried converting from the avi to mpeg2 image file to burn on the IMG and still no luck... Am I to understand that I should covert everything to and ISO image then try to write or build to IMG? If that's the case which freeware program do you recommend I use to do the conversion and one that's under 2 plus hours for conversion time...

Again thank you for reaching out with the your help...

Burning an AVI file in Build mode make a DivX disc, not a DVD Video disc.

If your player doesn't support DivX, it won't work.

Use DVD Flick or ConvertXtoDVD for the AVI->DVD Video conversion.

You don't have to convert to an ISO, just to a VIDEO_TS folder with IFO/BUP/VOB files. There are loads of guides in the Guides section on how to burn DVD Video disc.

Make sure you enable the 'Verify' option when you burn so the program can check the drive has done a decent job of burning.
