Skipping dvds

hello.... I've run into a recent problem with my burns. I've been doing exactly the same thing using exactly the same media burning some of the exact same files for over a year now. However, in the past few weeks i've run into the problem of having my dvd's skip. Not all, just some. I use TDK dvd+r, which yes i know isn't prime quality but for the last year they were perfectly fine. are there ones that are better than others? Is there a way to find out? could it be a problem with my drive or the iso files i'm creating? I don't verify my discs anymore because they often time won't .... posted a question about that a few months back but never really got my problem resolved so i just don't verify. is that a problem? I'm wondering if it is.

I take the avi and convert it to iso using dvdflick. this is the only program i've ever used to convert, never had a problem. then the dvd burns with imgburn through dvdflick but i dont seem to have a log of it? so i can't post a log. sorry.

i really hope someone here can help me.

to reach the maximum % success rate when burning

#1- use VERBATIM DVD-R, best brand!

#2- install latest firmware for your dvd burner

#3- its a good idea to use a DVD Lens CLeaner too!

#4- Dont burn too fast...

Sometimes, yes.

You see...

I 23:58:39 Destination Device: [0:1:0] Optiarc DVDRWBD BC-5600S 10AB (E:) (ATAPI)

I 23:58:39 Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: RITEK-F16-01) (Speeds: 2.4x, 4x, 6x, 8x)

These are the write speeds your burner supports with that media. Since 4x isn't resulting in a good burn, 6x and 8x are your next options. 2.4x isn't recommended because that media is rated 16x, and burning too slow in 16x media never gives good results. You could also try with Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden blanks, and you could also join the dark side, I mean, try with DVD-R discs :D

Okay... I'm trying faster speeds. Fingers crossed that will work because i just purchased a whack more of the tdk's thinking everything was fine....

For some reason i had it in my head that I had to use dvd+r... not sure where i got that from. So my drive can burn with dvd-r? what is the difference? which are really better?

Okay... just did a burn at 6x ... haven't played it yet in a dvd player to see if it skips though. but there is a little hiccup in the burn....

Most DVD players support reading both formats so in the end both formats should work. One doesn't have any technical advantages over the other if you're wondering.

That buffer underrun shouldn't be a problem and it may have happened because you were using the computer while burning.

By the way, you don't need to make an ISO image before burning: you can burn directly to disc from the VIDEO_TS folder. There's even an option for that in DVD Flick's settings if I'm not mistaken.

Yes i am aware that i can burn straight from the video_ts folder, but i keep the iso files for a long time so i find it easier to move single files around rather than whole folders. Just my preference... unless there's a disadvantage to an iso?

I really appreciate your help. I'm going to burn some of my "problem dvds" with 6x and see if that solves the problem. i'll surely let you know if it doesn't :)

Ah then you have a good reason for making the ISOs then :)

I suggested burning straight from the VIDEO_TS folder because most people will only burn them once or twice, and, in that case, burning directly from the folder would save them a few minutes from creating the ISO image ;)

  • 4 weeks later...

Okay.... the problem is back. But i can't figure out the reason why. Same media, burning at 6x, still skipping. If i burn the iso more than once, it doesn't skip in the same places. I just did one and it skipped just 3 minutes in, then the second burn it took over an hour before it skipped.

Should i try burning at a faster speed? slower speed?

I turn off everything on my computer while burning. internet, browsers, virus protection and such. Is there somethign perhaps running in the background that might be interfering wiht the burn?

Try burning at all of the 'supported' speeds and hope your drive does a semi decent job at one of them.

You've already been told you stand a much greater chance of success if you use decent discs, but if you're stuck with a boat load of 'RITEK-F16-01' stuff then you'll probably want to use them up first.

okay... so i'm wondering if there might be something running in the background on my computer. I have two computers now that i burn on and when i take the same avi file to the second computer and convert it to an iso and burn it to a disk, it doesn't skip. same disks too. is there a way to find out what might be running that could mess up the disk?

Aren't you then using a different drive for burning?!

Burn quality is determined by your drive/firmware/media combo.

I guess your other drive just does a better job at burning that MID/dye.

i've converted avi files on this computer before with no problems much, the other one is new. does this just mean that my older one is "burnt out" .... no pun inteded.

what about finding out if something is running in the background?

Converting the files isn't the issue here, the problem is with the drive burning to the media you've got.

*What* you're burning is of no consequence, the drive doesn't know or care about it.

When I burn, I don't touch any of my programs - I leave everything running exactly as it was before the burn.

oh, i did burn at 2.4x and it didnt skip. is this a sign that perhaps my drive is just getting over worked?

My own Optiarc SlimLine 7700 burns best at 2.4x rate. I get the feeling that such burners performs best at low speed.

then why is this problem coming now, not the months before when i was burning to the same media?

The exact same dye?

Generally, things get worse as they get older - I don't suppose drives (or media if it's the same physical spindle of discs you've been using for years) are an exception to that.

You shouldn't have to use the slowest speed to get a working disc. You'd expect the burn quality to vary depending on the speed used but it shouldn't be a make or break situation.

That fact that it is shows there's some problem in your drive/firmware/media combo.

Anyway, if 2.4x is working (for now anyway), stick to it. No doubt that'll stop working too at some point so do try and remember what we've said here.
