Burning effectively stops with LG GH22NS50

I have a LG GH22NS50 SATA DVD writer which is a few weeks old. From the beginning, I had various problems with this writer like "Device Reset" errors while using Nero. Now when I try to write a data DVD using Imgburn sometimes it writes the compilation successfully. But often it effectively stops midway. It says: "Effective Writing Speed: 0.0x" and there are no other errors displayed. The LED of the DVD writer keeps on blinking, and HDD usage is full. I have no other choice but to use the reset button to restart the system. When I tried to take a screenshot using MS Paint, it simply hanged when I clicked "File->Save". Same with other programs too. When I reset the computer, there is no data on it in the Imgburn log, as if the burning session had not happened at all. Once the whole computer froze while writing.

Here are the steps I have taken:

1. Used other burning software as CDBurnerXP (It gave the error: "(devNTSPTI_IO_Error) Could not write to Disc (LBA:

1807776 Length: 32).")

2. My drive firmware is up-to-date.

3. Using different DVD-Rs (I use TDK DVD-R for writing now.)

Also my computer configuration is as follows:

Processor: P4 2.8GHz

Motherboard: ASUS P5RD1-VM

Memory: 1.18 GB (+64 MB Shared) --> 1GB (400 Hz) & 256 MB (333 Hz)

I have already wasted several DVDs like this. I would be glad if someone helps me out. Thanks a lot in advance.

Also I apologize for the absence of the Imgburn Log.

Try again after updated chipset/storrage drivers. This site might help whith detecting newest/latest drivers.

Sure a log would tell us more.

Sorry but I have already tried that. My chipset & storage drivers are up-to-date and yet I have this problem. As for log file generation, I kept the system in that state for half an hour but nothing else was happening. So I had to reset my computer.

What OS are you running and how is your drive connected to motherboard? Directly to motherboard or via an adapter?

How is reported your drive by ImgBurn in log? IDE, SATA, RAID? Disable RAID in BIOS on that port if it is enabled.

What OS are you running and how is your drive connected to motherboard? Directly to motherboard or via an adapter?

How is reported your drive by ImgBurn in log? IDE, SATA, RAID? Disable RAID in BIOS on that port if it is enabled.

I am running Windows XP SP3.

My drive is connected to the motherboard by a thin red cable, probably its called a SATA Cable. So I assume its directly connected.

According to Imgburn:

"I 23:05:01 -> Drive 2 - Info: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH22NS50 TN02 (L:) (SCSI)"

Drive 1 is an ATA LG CD Writer.

It is also listed as"DVD+/-RW/RAM".

As for disabling RAID in that port, I have only the the option under "SouthBridge Configuratiion":

"Azalia Controller" which is set to [Enabled]

"Serial ATA Controller" which is set to [Enabled]

Now I also have two HDDs which are also SATA. So is it okay for me to disable SATA? I don't see any option there for disabling SATA port wise. According to the motherboard report from ma-config.com:

" Motherboard

SMBios version 2.3

ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5RD1-VM Rev 1.xx

Bios: American Megatrends Inc. 1104 07/17/2006 taille: 512Kb"

Please help. Thanks a lot.

As motherboard has RAID it should be a switch to tun it on/off. Read in manual how to do it.

Do not disable SATA, the system will not see your HDD's. You can try to put that setting to AUTO or IDE if it offer to see how it perform.

Install latest BIOS update, maybe it will fix something.

Sorry, I checked everywhere including the motherboard manual on how to disable RAID only, but it seems there is no option to do so in the BIOS.

According to http://blog.walnutz.net/uli-sata-raid-drivers-for-asus-p5rd1-vm-to-fix-sata-raid-problem.html,

: "...default setting for SATA hard drive on ASUS P5RD1-VM is set to SATA RAID wherever your SATA hard drive is only one. And you can’t disable SATA RAID setting in the BIOS, even you have updated to the latest BIOS."

Also I have latest version of the BIOS.

Also I'll try burning with Test Mode enabled. I have the latest drivers from the package you mentioned, mmalves.

The drive don't like the media you use. Try other brand of discs (Disc ID). Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are the best recommandations.

I have tried writing with other media such as TDK also. I had also tried it using SONY DVD+RW. But it was the first time I was able to generate the error message. Also using the same Sony DVD-R which made the process fail (I was using "Test Mode") right after that resulted in successful burning (this time again in Test Mode).

During other times, the problem is as I have said in first post. While using Imgburn, only once had the computer totally frozen. In other cases, I couldn't even take a snapshot using Paint as Paint hanged on clicking "Save". Same for Openoffice.org.

The thing is, sometimes the burn is successful & sometimes it is not.

Actually I had changed the burner two weeks ago with a new one. Yet the problem persisted. Moreover, the people at the place I bought it from said that the first one was not defective. Still they changed it for me. I had not used the previous burner with Imgburn, but still the error is the same while trying to burn using other applications (CDBurnerXP, Nero 9 Lite etc). Also it is a bit difficult for me to install it in another machine as I have not handled hardware before.

So I think its OK to assume that it is a problem with my computer.

Finally I managed to get hold of a screenshot while burning (please see the attachment for it). Unfortunately I had to use my LQ camcorder as the machine would not respond to take it, so I apologize for the bad quality. Also I wish to make some things clear:

1. I have had this problem for about one month now. It all started when my old & nonworking LG IDE DVD Writer was replaced by the SATA one, LG GH22NS50.

2. While using other burning programs such as Ashampoo Burning Studio Free, CDBurnerXP, Nero 9 Lite, it gave error messages. If required, I can post the Nero log for it. But in Imgburn, though the same error occurs, the system cannot come out of freezing, it stays like that until I reset it.

3. Sometimes it writes 4 or 5 DVDs without error one after another, sometimes it simply fails. On an average every 2 of 10 DVDs I burn fail with this.

4. As for trying it on another computer, unfortunately I am unable to do that. However, I have changed the DVD Writer once (2 weeks after purchasing it) with the same model. However, the error remains same.

5. Even after I formatted my machine, the error remains the same.

6. I have checked my new machine for viruses. There are none, but the problem persists.

7. My drive firmware is up-to-date, factory default settings are loaded in BIOS, latest SATA drivers from ULi installed. Yet the problem persists.

I would be glad if someone helps me out.

I tried moving the drive to another port as suggested. I moved it from the red to the black SATA port on my motherboard. Then I reset my BIOS settings to defaults. Now I see that while booting, the LED of the drive blinks a few times, a thing which it had not done before. However, burning after changing ports did not help. Again the burn failed. After that 2 DVDs again burned successfully.

Next I tried burning with Deepburner free portable. After writing 2 or so DVDs successfully it gave the error:

62900 UNIT ATTENTION (POWER ON, RESET, OR BUS DEVICE RESET OCCURRED)

I tried searching the internet with this error (I think this is THE error which has been causing so many coasters for me, its just that Imgburn failed to generate it. But the error was same for Nero & other burning software too.) but could not find any working solution.

I have not changed the cable yet, will try it within next week. But can anyone tell me how to fix this problem?

The bus reset happens when the command times out.

ImgBurn sets a large timeout for the commands it sends, that's why you don't see it as an error message.

So the timeout is not the issue, it's whatever's causing it to get stuck (and hence timeout) in the first place.

I think I'd be half tempted to get a jmicron / silicon image controller card (PCI or whatever) and plug the drive into that.

Oh, now I understand what the bus reset error is. Thanks a lot.

BTW, I tried installing an older version of the firmware (TN01, as compared to the latest version TN02, whichh according to LG adds only "Windows 7 support", and I am running XP SP3), but it did not work. I think I'll revert to the latest version.

As for the silicon PCI card, its the first time I've heard of it.

As for any ideas as to what's causing the timeout, I have no idea what it could be. Can anyone give me an idea on how to solve this? It would be a lot of help. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Just finished upgrading the firmware. And I don't think jmicron/silicon PCI card installation is possible for me. So I would be glad if alternative ways are suggested.

If you've already got the latest drivers for your chipset (it's a Uli chipset yeah), there's little more you can do.

I keep clear of anything other than Intel chipsets when buying motherboards, the rest just aren't worth the trouble so far as drivers and general I/O stability are concerned.

I've used Silicon Image PCI SATA controller cards in the past myself when I ran out of onboard ports so I know they work ok as a 3rd party chipset for optical drives.

Buying one of those is the route I'd go... unless you're up for buying a new motherboard (with an Intel chipset) entirely!

I see. Well then I shall try installing an Image PCI SATA controller card (jmicron/silicon if possible) and see if it works. Then I'll post the results here.

Anyways, thank you very much for your help & support.

You want a card with a flashable bios chip on it.

This is because Silicon Image offer 2 types of bios... a RAID one and a non RAID one. The latter being what you need for optical drives.

The only jmicron controller I've used is my onboard jmb36x one. They do this as a PCIe card (2x SATA2 ports and 1x IDE).

Do you mean one of these two cards?

http://www.siliconimage.com/products/product.aspx?pid=29 ( SiI3512 - PCI to 2 Port SATA150

SATALink 2-Port PCI Host Controller)

OR

http://www.siliconimage.com/products/product.aspx?pid=28 ( SiI3114 - PCI to 4 Port SATA150

SATALink 4-Port PCI Host Controller)

I think the PCI to 2 Port SATA150 card will do for me. But I wish to know whether these are the ones I am looking for (card with flashable BIOS chip & non-RAID BIOS, which I read somewhere is known as "SATALink").

Please let me know soon. Thanks in advance.

Yup, they're the ones.

The 3512 is slightly newer than the 3114 (it replaced a 3112) but obviously it just has the 2 ports rather than 4 ;)

If you locate them on ebay (should only be £10 - 15 or so), ask the seller if it has the flashable chip. If they don't know, see if they'll give you the number off the bios chip and just Google it yourself.
