ImgBurn unhappy with AnyDVD (batch with autoloader)

Windows 7 x64, 6GB RAM, oodles of free disk space (~1.3TB on a network share).

Brand new Acronova Nimbie NB11LS autoloader, containing Optiarc AD-7241S drive.

Without AnyDVD installed, when I read (rip) DVDs, I can rip multiple DVDs in batch mode 'successfully' (they fail as expected with CSS issues, autoloader rejects). Here's a rather uninteresting log:

I 08:03:56 Batch Mode Completed! - The Auto Loader's input bin is empty.

With AnyDVD 6.7.7.0 installed, I get one of two behaviors:

1. the first disc rips successfully, but every subsequent one in the bin is rejected immediately after loading, even before the 'Scanning Disc' popup from AnyDVD appears.

2. it doesn't get as far as the first disc. Loads it, then wedges at 'Checking Filesystem...' or 'Getting Media Status...'

One example log of the second failure case

and there it stops, sitting at 'Getting Media Status...'. Cancel doesn't get me out of this state, after about a minute of no activity I force-quit.

I've also seen hangs with the status 'Terminating AutoInsert Thread...' when I try to abort or exit.

I got the loader because I want to rip a bunch of my daughter's DVDs to a media server, and give her a media adapter with a cover art UI. She doesn't read yet, and not old enough to be handling DVDs, but knows what she wants to watch, and has no problem finding a cover image. I've been using AnyDVD for a while, adding the Acronova Nimbie and ImgBurn looked like a great solution. Except it's not working for me...

Yes, I saw the warnings about turning off AnyDVD if I'm verifying. I'm not, just 'read' mode. I also saw a thread on this board where Lightning explained the issue, and that AnyDVD should work fine otherwise.

Does this combination work for others? what versions are you using? any configuration options I should verify?

What other information should I provide?

Well you're just not going to be able to rip those discs without anydvd, since they are copy protected. Imgburn only works with non-copy protected discs so you will have to rip with anydvd, though unfortunately since it does not support your loader you will just have to do one disc at a time, sorry.

Thanks for trying to help Rincewind but this one is best left for me. :)

It could be an issue with the auto loader drivers not getting the response they're expecting from the drive (because AnyDVD is busy with it) having loaded the disc. I'll look into it and see if I can get more info about the problem.

I'll report back soon...

Ok, I've seen what it is... it's because once the program has instructed the loader to load the drive and the loader has reported success, it only waits 5 seconds for the drive to say it's 'Ready' (polling each second). The 5 seconds gets reset each time the drive says it's in the process of becoming ready. Once the 5 seconds have run out, it rejects the disc and moves onto the next one. The program does this to catch and reject discs that the drive can't initialise properly - i.e. it tries ('in progress of becoming ready...') but then never becomes 'Ready' (normally reverting to 'Medium Not Present' or 'Incompatible Medium Installed').

AnyDVD returns bogus info to the program (Media Not Present) for the entire time it spends initialising and scanning the disk (which could be several minutes), thus causing the 5 second timeout to occur - when normally it wouldn't be a problem.

If it just returned 'Logical unit is in process of becoming ready' (ASC 0x04, ASCQ 0x01 - ideally with the SKSV flag set and an indication of progress), during that time instead of 'Medium Not Present' (ASC 0x3A, ASCQ 0x00), this problem wouldn't exist :)

It would be also be nice if AnyDVD reported the exact status of the drive when the true response is something 'Medium Not Present' (ASC 0x3A, ASCQ 0x??) related. Lots of drives tweak that response to say 'Medium Not Present - Tray Open' (ASC 0x3A, ASCQ 0x01) or 'Medium Not Present - Tray Closed' (ASC 0x3A, ASCQ 0x02), but that info is lost when AnyDVD is enabled and it always just returns 'Medium Not Present' (ASC 0x3A, ASCQ 0x00).

Feel free to flag this thread up to their support team, maybe they can improve their implementation. :) (That's why I've added some technical stuff to this thread)

The alternative is for me to bodge it, detect AnyDVDTray.exe running and then use a 5 minute timeout or something. I'd really rather not do that!

Thanks, Lightning. That makes perfect sense.

I've posted a thread on Slysoft's AnyDVD forum with a quick explanation and pointing them back here:

http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=46093

Hopefully that will get the ball rolling.

I completely concur - I'm a software developer by trade too, and it definitely rubs the wrong way to be forced to include compatibility workarounds. Better to try to get the root cause resolved :)

In the interim, how do you feel about making the timeout value a registry entry, config file entry, or similar? Looking to get unblocked while working to get it resolved the right way. Slysoft does updates pretty frequently, but I don't know how long the pipeline is, or how they'd prioritize this.

Well, it looks like James @ SlySoft is open to making the changes, but it won't be anytime soon.

Lighning, could I persuade you to make that timeout configurable in the meantime? doesn't have to have a pretty UI, I'd be happy to tweak a config file or registry entry, if there were one. This would purely be a workaround until SlySoft improve their reporting behavior.

I'd really like to get started with my daughter's stack of DVDs...

The release notes for AnyDVD 6.8.0 (just out) mentioned some work on the driver. So I was keen to see if things had improved.

Unfortunately it seems to be worse, if anything. It might be my imagination, but it seemed like ImgBurn rejected the second disc faster than it had previously.

Lightning, I'm sure you're up to your eyeballs with other things, but it might be worth a quick retest with AnyDVD 6.8.0, to see if the status reporting from AnyDVD has changed.
