BD-RE Not Fully Formatting Correctly

I have a Sony BD-RE(Single Layer) that I am trying to reformat. I have an LG LG WH10LS30 Blu-ray Burner that I am using to do it. I wrote a Blu-ray ripped movie to the disc, then I went under Windows Explorer and had it erase the disc, only to find it come out to 22.5GB. This will not let me write another Blu-ray movie to the disc because the rips need 23.31GB to write onto. I searched around and found this thread about my problem. I went into ImgBurn's settings and I, under Preferred format size, changed the drop down menu to Maximum. Then I fully erased the disc in ImgBurn, and it came out to 25,000,000,000(not the exact number, but rounded) bytes or 23.31GB which is correct. Then I went into Windows Explorer and tried to format it, and it will not successfully format it and once it is done says it's 22.5GB. If I erase then don't reformat yet, and go into Disk Management under Computer Management, it does list the disk as 23.31 with the RAW filesystem(Great, but even formatting through that with the UDF 2.5 filesystem still does not work, it fails.). Also something else to be noted is that now if I try to open the disk under Windows Explorer it only gives me the option for "Like a USB Drive", and not a mastered disk.

Now if I erase quickly, it only lists my disk as 24,000,000,000 byte disk under ImgBurn.

So, how can I get this disk properly formatted with 23.31GB of data again? I'd be happy to provide anymore data that is needed. Thanks.

Go to ImgBurn's settings, Write tab, hit the Defaults button, answer No (so that it resets the settings only of the Write tab) and click OK. Then do a Full Erase using ImgBurn.

Whenever you need to burn to that disc use ImgBurn and you don't need to erase it beforehand: just overwrite the data. ImgBurn will keep the current format, as opposed to Windows Explorer which looks like is resetting it to spare areas enabled.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I was a bit busy.

I did as you stated. Full erased worked great, and then I tried to burn a movie, here is the output:

It gives the Verify failed because the Layouts do not match. After the full erase with the defaults set, it still does not let me set the disk to mastered in windows 7 when you initialize it, and when you set to like a cd/usb drive, it fails again. The movie does play(at least on my pc, didn't test my BD player). Any ideas now? Thanks!

You shouldn't let Windows touch the disc at all. Just cancel out of any prompt it puts up on the screen.

The layout mismatch issue is probably due to the drive not initialising the disc properly. The only way to know for sure is to copy + paste the disc info from the box on the right (back on the main screen, on the 'Device' tab if you're in Build mode) just after it's failed.

Have you installed the 1.00-A9 firmware?

I bought the drive in november, so i assume that it has the updated firmware. The LG firmware update utility hasn't given me any updates either. I went into Tools>Drive>Check for firmware updates, and the dialog box pops up and says that I have 1.00 (1.00-07) I'm guessing I should update to 1.00-A9 then? I downloaded the firmware .zip and ran it, but purposefully did not do the update. Before I run it, I just want to make sure that it is correct that even if I have the version going from 1.00 to 1.00 in the updater that it will still update to the A9 correct?

Now I have another problem. I just tried to burn a BDMV and CERT folder to a memorex 4x disc(running 2x write), and it has also given me the same problem:

Could this problem have to do with my settings in Tools>Drive>Change Advanced Settings? I have not touched one thing in there.

Thanks for your help so far. I've used this program on many a system and it works wonderfully, except this one time(I'm pretty sure its just my LG drive being difficult, but I only got it for $80, so I can't complain.).

Yes, the firmware will still update to A9 even though they're both shown as 1.00 to the user. You should go ahead and do that.

When you've done it, try another burn.

This time though, just before it finished the write phase (and before verify starts - say at 95% complete or something), press the F8 key to enable I/O debug mode.

Then, if you still get the layout error, save the contents of the Log window (via File -> Save As) and upload it here on the forum.

I updated the firmware to the A9 version, and then I tried to full erase my BD-RE again(Would rather not waste another BD-R). It got to 98% on the erase phase, and just halted. I turned on debug mode and this the output:

I 11:10:28 [3:0:0] HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH10LS30 1.00 (F:) (SATA)
I 11:10:28 CDB: 00 00 00 00 00 00

E 11:10:28 SENSE Interpretation: Logical Unit not ready, Format in progress - 98%

That is being looped every second. I tried to close Imgburn, but it says that you cannot cancel the erase process. Should I force quit it and if I do will I be able to use the BD-RE again? What do you think is the problem here?

Either the drive got stuck or your drivers are messing things up.

What controller is the drive plugged into? What chipset does your motherboard use? Intel? AMD? NVIDIA?

Just a quick update:

I ended the Imgburn task in Task Manager, and the drive keep blinking like it was before, so it most likely got stuck. I then hard shut down, and rebooted. I then did a full erase on the disc again, and it successfully completed both stages with no Layouts mismatch error. I then tried to burn a BDMV and CERT folder onto it, and it gave me the layouts mismatch error. The problem obviously, is still persisting.

This is a custom built rig. Specs are as follows:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 (BIOS F11)

CPU: Intel Core i5-750 Quad-Core

Memory: 8GB of G.SKILL RAM

Chipset: Intel P55 Chipset

My motherboard by spec has 5 3Gbps SATA ports running off of the Intel P55 Chipset, and 2 3Gbps SATA ports running off of the GSATA Chipset(Gigabyte's SATA chipset). I have four HDD's on the Intel SATA chipset(One free port), and then my Blu-ray burner is on the GSATA_0 port of the GSATA chipset. I didn't think of it before, but could this be the problem? I've had problems with SATA addressing before specifically with OS installs when the hard drive is not plugged in the first SATA port.

Is your Intel one in ATA, AHCI or RAID mode? Optical drives would work better on that controller than the GSATA (JMicron) one but RAID mode sometimes messes things up. You'd want the latest Rapid Storage Tech driver installed either way.

If you want to keep it on the JMicron controller, just make sure you install the latest driver installed.

Don't forget about doing what I said in post 6.

My Intel ports are in AHCI/RAID mode(My windows 7 install is running on two 1TB's in RAID 0, and then my two other 1TB's are not members of any RAID array.). Let me install the GSATA controller driver because it seems I forgot to install it when I reinstalled.

After that I will test another burn & post output of debug mode. It seems now though that when I full erase the disk it succeeds but when I burn a folder or any other file it fails.

Edit: Forgot to add that I do have the Rapid Storage Technology software installed(I use it to enable write caching and monitor the array.).

I installed the GSATA driver, and now the Full Erase for the BD-RE, and the burning of the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders onto both the BD-RE and the BD-R work flawlessly. If I have anymore problem I will be sure to post them. Thanks for the help, it's great to know that not only are you getting help from someone, but your getting it from the developer of the program.
