Why do my Verbatim DL keep failing verification ?

Recommended Posts

I am getting so fed up with dual layers, even if I use Verbatims they recently always fail verification, at around 6 to 8% regardless of the ISO I have just burnt. I can't find any better dual layers so this is all I can get. I am sure when I used to burn them about a year ago they always were fine, but in the last month, with different batches even, they always seem to fail verification but not at the layer point like you might expect. I use them for archiving so unless I sit through an entire DVD each time after burning then I am never sure if they are still ok even if they failed. I have disabled AnyDVD.

Any idea ? Below is one example.

No, because I assumed media was meant to be burnt at advertised speeds these days ? I know once upon a time slower was better but I thought something changed where it meant a faster speed is often better. However, if you think burning at 4x or 6x is worth a go, I will do that and give it a shot. I will burn one right now at 4x and edit this post in 40 mins to see if it worked or not, however, it will be annoying if so, as I only got my external LG burner for faster dual layer burning as my existing one only burnt at 4x (which upon thinking about it now may explain why the ones I recorded last year, worked, as I could only burn at 4x then).

These are the write speeds your burner supports on that media, and in theory all of them should work the same, so if 8x isn't working then it's worth a shot trying the slower ones.

Thanks, it is burning now at 4x, will see soon if the verification works.

While I am here, what is your opinion on ticking seamless ? I always tick it, but do you think that is a wise idea ? I never know if a "green excellent rated star" layer break is better than selecting seamless.

EDIT UPDATE : Well, it seems like the reason is due to the speed, so thanks to mmaives for that advice, I burnt it on my LG 4x DL burner and it verified fine, no errors or problems. Shame that they don't work at 8x as 4x takes ages, but them the breaks I guess.

You should build your images (or burn the VIDEO_TS folder directly) with ImgBurn, not whatever you're using now.

DVD Video discs don't usually include the Joliet file system.

If your player supports seamless ok (you'd know about it by now if it didn't) then it's fine. Depending on what's being offered, you should preview the layer break positions in order to make an informed choice. The stars are there as a guide (based on technical info, not actual video content), that's all.

Regarding the software, I make and create a project into an ISO with DVD Movie Factory by Ulead (now Corel), I usually make my own DVDs (rather than rip), so perhaps that is why ? If I ever do rip, then I always use IMGBurn, but to author and create a DVD from video files I need to use authoring software that creates menus, like Movie Factory, I use that as it supports xDVD format (I usually put 8 hours of VHS converted video on to a dual layer). So, are you saying I should make a VIDEO_TS folder with Movie Factory instead of a ISO and then build it in to an ISO with IMGBurn ?

So, in your expert opinion, would you suggest seamless over an excellent rated layer break position if you know your player is seamless compatible ?

Thanks again for all the help, love your software.

Bummer, now I have another problem, I tried 4x and now I got the below problem. It now just says "Device Not Ready (Medium Not Present - Tray Closed)" when the drive opened and closed to verify. Also it says at the bottom "Potential 'WaitImmediateIO' Deferred Error - (77%, 0/3) - No Seek Complete", I have no idea what this means, did it complete okay in the end ? I left it do its thing so couldn't see if it finished ok.
