Annoying burning problem.

Hello all,

I've been trying to backup my music onto DVDs lately, but all attempts with whatever programs I can find (Nero, ImgBurn, etc) have been chucking out coasters (total: 8).

This is only recently, as I've successfully burned a couple of movie DVDs before, using Nero Express.

Anyway, I've used Nero to burn the backups at first, but then they failed, and the logs were confusing. so I've tried using ImgBurn, with not much luck either. The first time the errors started showing up I could record the log, but the 2nd time I tried burning the comp started to choke up, hanging whenever it was retrying to write. The error, IIRC, was along the lines of "Retry Failed: The Requested File(or Device, I forgot) is in Use". I could not record the log because as soon as the 20th retry failed my comp started to spazz out and hang. This was after I uninstalled InCD (thought it was useless).

Any ideas? I know the discs are cheap (?1 for 4) but I have used them before and they do work, although with 8 coasters made from them now I'm not sure what to think.

I've also tried to upgrade my drive firmware but I've no idea how to do it - the Firmware download gave me a .exe which was in Japanese (...?).

Also, a screenshot of the error window from the first burning session: http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/2469/arghaq3.jpg

Thanks for the reply! Am I correct in thinking that the discs are at fault, judging from that log? Guess I'll go buy some better quality ones from the site.

Currently trying to repair the damage I've caused by (un)installing all types of rubbish in an attempt to fix this headache. I've found my LG disc has an auto firmware update program (doh...), using that now, updates fine, so that's one thing fixed :) The link you provided was the one I used btw, it gives a Japanese executable

lol can't you read Japanese?! :P

I didn't check the exe personally so I didn't see where it linked to etc.

Normally it's just a case of selecting the right drive and clicking 'start' though - so even in foreign languages, it's quite a straight forward process.

Still, so long as you're on JL13 now, that's all that matters. :)

Disc wise you want to be looking at MCC or TY (Tayio Yuden) dyes.

No need to pay massive attention to the 'brand' name, it's the dye that's important.

Oh and yes, the log seems to show your drive having trouble burning to the media. If your firmware is up-to-date, the only other thing you can do is buy better (supported) discs.

Ugh....

Firmware updated, last disc was also a coaster. This time the log showed that the reason was again, "Retry Failed: The Requested Resource is in use.". No idea what this 'resource' is.

Okay, them discs go in the bin, time to try the -RW variant. This time I tried a test run, which appeared to work like a charm, only to fail spectacularly on the real burn. Apparently it's an "incompatible format", and I'm pretty damn sure this here drive can burn everything available.

The ID is OPTODISCW002, which I've checked to be decent through the digitalFAQ site. Still got 2 more discs to try before going to buy new ones :|

And no, I can't read Japanese, unfortunately :P

Hmm, I don't like optodisc myself.

To be honest there aren't really any great dyes for any sort of rewritable discs.

The Ricoh 4x DVD+RW ones are ok but the 8x ones are very unreliable in current drives (with current firmware).

I don't bother with DVD-RW because I can live without having to erase them each time I do a test burn (I have to do a LOT of tests!).

With DVD+RW I can just overwrite the existing data. :)

@airan,

Have you installed recently Alcohol, CloneCD or such program with emulation features? They can really mix up things. I disable emulation in Daemon Tools myself when not using it.

Yes I have - Daemon Tools is on my comp at the moment. I've disabled its virtual drives and emulation for now though, although I'm not sure if it's entirely shut off.

d.tools is always enabled on mine too , never had a problem yet

You mean emulation is always enabled? DT is running all the time here as well, but certain types of emulation can mix up communication of ATAPI drives. So I disable all kinds of emulation when not needed.
