Read mode copy nuked

Recommended Posts

Starting with 2.5.6 I started getting the error message:

Sorry, using Read mode to create an image file from a

multi-track DVD-R disc is not currently supported.

Instead, use Build mode to create a new 'clean' image

based on the contents of the disc.

The change log told me the process had been improved:

Added/Changed: Prevent Read mode from being used to create

(useless) image files of multi-session/track DVD/HD

DVD/Blu-ray discs and suggest using Build mode to create a

new image based on the contents of the disc instead.

Below is a directory of two discs, the source and ImgBurn 2.5.7. Since the two are identical except for a null AUDIO_TS directory generated by ImgBurn, what are the 'useless' image files being referred to as justification?

Disabling the Read mode method of copying seems to have done nothing more than made the exercise more clumsy.

Can anyone help me out by explaining the benefit of this 'improvement'?

If you try and read a multisession disc to a single session image, you could/would lose data (files) present in one but not the other.

So if the file system in session 1 contained 'file1.jpg' and the file system in session 2 contained 'file1.jpg' (from session 1) and 'file2.jpg' (new in session 2), you may find 'file2.jpg' doesn't exist when you browse your single session image file. That's the reason Read mode is blocked from reading such discs and why Build mode must be used instead - it'll read the files from the most recent file system tables/descriptors on the disc (i.e. what you'd see in Explorer).

What you say makes sense, but the situation here bears no resemblance.

The DIRs in my post show identical contents for the original and ImgBurned DVDs.

The size of the ISO file from each is identical.

ImgBurn recognizes the original as multi-session.

ImgBurn does not recognize the DVD it recorded as multi-session.

Is multi-session a flag or a condition?

Yeah but how are you looking at the DIR contents? You can't see the contents of session 1 without the use of special tools.

A disc being multi-track/session is something the program finds out by querying the drive. Put the disc in and copy + paste the disc info from the box on the right when you're in Read mode.

No special tools, just a DIR of the DVD drive. The original DVD was finalized after being recorded by the DVR (it's unreadable elsewhere until that is done).

The original DVD does not look like a multi-session disc, there is only one session listed in TOC Information.

Surely the absence of File System Information or more than one recorded track in Session 1 does not make a single session disc into multi-session.

Ah now that's interesting... yours is a multi track but not multi session. I don't recall seeing a disc layout like that before on DVD.

Can you post ALL of the disc info from the original disc please?

I might be able to add an exception for layouts like that but I'm not sure I have the means to create such a disc that I could use for testing.

Do you recall what you did to record it like that? Multiple recordings over a period of time? Were you recording to it directly or just transferring stuff to it now and then?

The layout is common to the two different brands of DVR that we have, and I suspect it may be common to all. The disc info below is of one burned on each DVR.

In addition to recording TV shows, we use the DVR to edit our camcorder videos and record the final result to DVD. The PC has superior editing tools but that is solo work and by porting it to DVR we can watch together on the large screen and decide/agree on where to divide and what to cut out.

The contents can be of 1-18 titles, but there is only a single recording followed by finalizing. DVD recorders are the most fragile component of DVRs so copies made for family members are duped on the PC.

The Disc Info of "Sessions: 1" would probably be enough, and if you send me your address I can mail you a couple of DVDs for testing.

The Matsushita format of three short tracks preceding the three long tracks looks like title and content but the Funai has 8 titles and no short/longs that correspond.

  • 7 months later...

I am running into the same problem with a DVD+R recorded on a Toshiba DVR620KC (a Funai DVD recorder). There is a single title on the DVD and the DVD was finalized.

Normally, I record from the Toshiba using a DVD+RW which I have successfully copied to a DVD+R using ImgBurn 2.5.7. I had some read checks on the DVD+RW today so to save time, I recorded directly to a DVD+R but was then not able to create an image file from which I could make a second DVD.

I used a freeware DVD->ISO program to generate an ISO file which I could then burn to a DVD+R using ImgBurn. As far as I can tell, the copy is identical to the original.

Any update on this issue? it is not a big deal in that I almost always record to a rewritable DVD and then copy it to a write-once DVD. Imgburn does not seem to have any problems creaging an image file from this copy. The problem only occurs when I record to a write-once DVD and try to make a copy using Imgburn.
