AVCHD DVD invalid

Hi,

I've followed the the following link to burn AVCHD DVD on DVD+R DL disc.

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/burn_avchd_with_imgburn.cfm

The first disc was success. It was created with ImgBurn and DVD writer.

Then I upgraded to BD writer and started to burn a lot of BD discs. Now I am trying 2nd project. ImgBurn no longer pops up for file system UDF suggestion since that's how it's set. However, the 2nd project had failed to produce playable disc.

The option used is MODEL1/2048 UDF 2.50 with Recurse Subdirectories checked (should not matter, right?). After the burn completed (include verification), explorer will show just the folder BDMV and CERTIFICATE as empty folders and Encore as a file. Once rebooted, explorer will show the correct folder structure (see bottom).

However, TotalMedia Theatre complains the disc is invalid. The mts files in the STREAM folder plays fine.

I've tried to create ISO instead. Once the image is mounted, it plays fine. However, burning the mds/iso resulted in unplayable disc as well.

What could it be the problem?

it does not the Encore folder (It contains a few files used for authoring)?

Or it's the problem with the burner?

Thanks!

The burn was a success (including verification) and I did not see anything in the log looking wrong. I can save the log next time. Is there anythng specific I should look for?

Thanks

The logs gets saved automatically, you can pull up old ones via the Help menu.

I just want to check everything was detected correctly. Playback issues comes from your player or the source files - because ImgBurn just burns exactly what you give it. Of course that doesn't really explain why a mounted ISO behaves differently to that same ISO burnt to a disc.

What program do you use for mounting?

What version of TMT are you running? Do you have the latest patches installed?

Have you tried any other playback software? e.g. PowerDVD

TMT is 5.0.1.114. It has successfully played an AVCHD 1080i on CD before.

I am using Virtual CloneDrive

I don't have Power DVD. Neither MPC-HC or WMP can play the disc (not sure if they should).

I've digged out the log. Does it provide any hint?

Right, well if you mount a BD Video disc in Virtual Clone Drive it'll be emulating a BD-R disc. What you've got that is a DVD+R DL that's been booktyped to DVD-ROM... that could be what's causing the problem.

I don't know the specifics on what TMT looks for and works with when trying to play a BD Video (or AVCHD) disc, you should talk to Arcsoft. It may not like the DVD-ROM booktype or it may not like the CERTIFICATE folder being there... who knows.

btw, the latest patch can be downloaded from here - http://www.arcsoft.com/Forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9760&title=...a-theatre-521119-release-notes

You can update the firmware on your burner too. PL04 is available now - http://www.firmwarehq.com/Lite-On/iHBS112%2B2/files.html

Thanks for pointing them out. I will update. I'd like to clear a few things before doing the burning again to avoid more coasters.

Is there a different booktype to try? If so, how do I control it? I have a few DVD+RW available (SL though) so that I can experiment if needed.

Thanks

Basically, you either booktype to DVD-ROM or you leave it set to whatever the media really is.

There's an option in the Settings that could help you if it turns out that TMT needs the booktype set on something other than DVD-ROM. It's on the Write tab and it's called [use 'Normal' For BD Video Discs (*)]

If you mount a .DVD file (which points to the .ISO) in Virtual Clone Drive and you have a line in it saying 'MediaType=DVD', it may override the program using BD-R for any sized BD Video image.

You could check it using ImgBurn in Read mode. If you select the virtual drive in the source box and look in the disc info text on the right, the 'Current Profile' should say 'DVD-ROM'. If it does, see if TMT will play that ok - and if it does, the booktype probably isn't the problem.

I've got the following information below.

PowerDVD can play the disc, except it can't render the menu. The mounted ISO works fine.

There are 2 sections for physical format information: ADIP has DVD+R DL vs Last Record has DVD-RAM

The ISO mounted via Virtual CloneDrive has not book type information.

They also have different Current Profile. Not sure if they are relevant.

In Settings -> Write tab -> Page 1, I see

Auto 'Change Book Type' (*) -- checked

Use 'Normal' For BD Video Disc (*) -- unchecked

Should I check the 2nd option?

Thanks

I just read a bit more details in the guide at http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=6232

Samsung (using the identifier 'TSSTcorp') and LG (using the identifier 'HL-DT-ST') drive owners will automatically have all their +R /+RW /+R DL media changed to look like a DVD-ROM disc via bit setting. (Note: +RW bit setting isn't supported by the LG drives though).

For NEC based drives with original firmware only +R DL media will be book typed to 'DVD-ROM'. For +R/+RW media need first to flash the burner with a patched firmware, that then allows for the book type to be changed to DVD-ROM. You can read more in the guide Book type +R/+RW media on NEC/Optiarc drives.

It did not actually mention Lite-on. Should I disabled Auto 'Change Book Type'?

Thanks

Could you point me the a link about how to do this? This is probably the quickest way to test if Virtual CloneDrive can be manipulated to simulate different book type.

Create a text file in a pure text editor (like Windows Notepad) and name it to something and let it end with .dvd Save it to the same place as you have your original iso file stored.

Assume you create a file named ACME.dvd

then it should have these lines inside it

MediaType=DVD

ACME.ISO

then use this ACME.dvd to mount it.

Replace the word ACME with the name of your created ISO file.

Yes, just tick that box I told you about in the settings :)

[use 'Normal' For BD Video Discs (*)]

'Normal' means to just leave it alone (or force it back to 'Normal' if the drive defaults to making it DVD-ROM). So if it's a DVD+R DL disc it'll stay as DVD+R DL and won't be changed to DVD-ROM.

Try building an ISO without the CERTIFICATE folder and mount that as a DVD too, see if that works.

Here is the report

dvd file: HDDVD, BDR works

MDS file: nothing works

However, PowerDVD can play all of them fine, except can't use the menu.

What will happen if I set the book type for DVD+R DL to BDR?
