Write error when using MDS - not when using ISO

Howdy,

Ive recently been having some problems when trying to burn using the MDS file rather than the ISO.. I blew through 3 Verabtim +R DL's using the MDS until I tried the ISO by itself (moved the mds file to another directory) - and it burned fine.

Happened again to me tonight (differen ISO) - but only wasted 1 DL..

Im using Anydvd 6.0.6.1 and dvddecrypter to make the ISO/MDS files..

I turn off anydvd to do the burn.

I suspicious of anydvd in this instance as ive only recently updated it and burned many DL's using MDS without problems.

Here is the log - note this failed 3 times on me (3 different discs) when I used the MDS file (For a DVD9), and burned perfectly when I used the ISO only:

The following log shows a sucessful burn of a DVD5 MDS and a failed DVD9 MDS (which burns fine with the ISO only):

I also updated to IMGBURN 2.1.0.0 which exhibited the same problems with the same MDS & ISO file (I didnt keep the log of that one tho)

Does using the ISO only mean it uses the same layerbreak position? Thats the only potential difference between using the MDS or using the ISO directly.

It looks to me as if your drive just bombed out on burning the last bit of the 2nd layer.

Isn't there a 8.29 version of your firmware out? or can you not crossflash to 1.29? You might have more luck with it.

Hi Lightning UK,

Yeah same layerbreak position.. (I checked it before burning the ISO directly) I thaught it was a bad burn at first, but it burns fine with the ISO and not with the MDS - thats the wierd thing... 3 dl's failing in a row on the MDS then working on the ISO... and again 1 fail on the MDS and burn fine on the ISO (jewel case jobs).. just seems really suss to me - and they failed in the same spot...

Firmware: Yeah I think theres a newer version out.. but these burns have been pretty good with that firmware (tested on a liteon drive with kprobe2).. ive only had these bad burns out of 40 DL's so far..

I'll check on the anydvd forums to see if anyone else has seen anything similar..

So theres no real problems burning the ISO directly rather than the MDS if the layerbreak is in the same spot? (manually checked?)

Cheers,

Bitey

Even though this may sound unrealated to your problem, I'd lower the burn speed to 4x.

Your right - it does sound unrelated :-).. next spindle of DL's i'll give it a try on one of these troublesome MDS files.. to test it out.. im still wondering if the MDS is referencing something that doesnt exist in the ISO.. (then again i might just be going crazy :)

Cheers,

Bitey

Actually, 8.26 seems the newest for that drive. It's the "Buffalo" version of the Pioneer DVR-111 drive, which has bitsetting support, DVD-RAM write/read, and Labelflash all in one. He needs to keep the 8.26 version to keep all those features. I have the same drive (111D crossflashed to 111L) and it works fine with 8.26 firmware.

If the .MDS file somehow got corrupted, or was for a different DVD, could it perhaps cause the issues he's having?

W 21:46:56 Failed to Write Sectors 3952672 - 3952703 - Unknown (Internal Target Failure) (0x44, 0xD6)

Looking at where the burn failed right near the end of the second layer I doubt it has anything to do with with the LB, that's why I'm going for speed.

You could argue that burning the ISO should produce the same result, and I'd have to agree, but it could just be fluke that the ISO goes through and the MDS fails.

Just a thought.

I'd hope the ElbyCDIO interface wasn't making up the error! So no, it shouldn't make a difference.

Although I always recommend people use SPTI, Mr Bitey might be using Elby because he is running under a 'normal' (non admin) account - where SPTI then wouldn't work.

All,

Thanks for the replies.. Im using elbycdio because it seems to be 'recommended' for people (over on the cdfreaks anydvd subforum) using anydvd to do the decrypting and dvddecrypter to do the ISO making. If SPTI works fine then i'll use that :-) (im not on a non-admin account).

The MDS was definatly for the right DVD (both times)..

Kenadjian,

I know what your saying re:speed - but the drive slows down near the end of the burn (the failures were occuring late in the process 98% / 99%) where the drive'd slowed down burning. I'll see if I can find the .ibg file for that burn..

Lightning UK - is there a way to check if the MDS is 'bad' ?

Cheers,

Bitey
