I/O Error [Please Help]

I'm trying to help my friend from Germany create a game with a DVD + R DL, 8.5gb, 2.4x and he has been prompted with this message twice now. The first time he made it to 74% and then it gave this error code. We tried to burn another one and this time it only made it to 63% before it gave the same exact error code. I read in a post that he may need new discs or a new burner, but they didn't have the exact same error code so I wanted to make sure I know exactly what he should do. I don't want him to spend money if he doesn't have to.

That BenQ drive is ancient, it won't have firmware support for the UME discs you're trying to use. Don't buy more of those discs either, you should be buying the Verbatim MKM ones.

I was half asleep when I quoted you last night and I forgot to ask, if he buys Verbatim discs, will he be able to burn it with that BENQ burner? Or do you just suggest he buys new discs and a new burner like a iHas or something?
