DVD+R DL Won't Verify after burn

Hello,

I'm having a rather persistent issue with burning a DL DVD.  I'm using Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD+R DL inkjet printable discs.  They are allegedly the highest quality discs available.  The content I'm attempting to burn is a custom video I edited in Avid Studio.  Avid created the image for DL media and the file size is about 7.6Gb.  When I use ImgBurn to burn the image to disc I've been getting failures during verify, beginning when Layer 1 starts.  This leads me to believe that I have an issue with my layer break point.  ImgBurn selects a break point for me by assigning it a gold star.  I have been selecting that each time.

     What am I missing here?

Try installing the latest firmware for the drive and give it another go.

http://www.firmwarehq.com/Samsung/SH-S223Q/files.html

If it still can't produce a working disc at 4x, either your drive has had it or your disc aren't the quality 'MKM-003-00' should be (and the drive can't handle it).

The firmware is newest.  That was my last ditch effort before posting here.

Do you know how I can tell if my discs are correct.  I can find them on Newegg using the link in your sticky thread.  The difference I see from these to the most highly recommended discs is that these are made in United Arab Emirates, not Singapore.

I know that you are very well-versed in this but one reason I haven't been suspecting the discs is that I've coastered 10 of them trying this.

I've been doing as much reading as I can on this topic. And have a specific question about the layer break.  I've read that having chapters may help the burning software find a suitable layer break.  Currently my project has no chapters.  I've considered adding chapters only to help the Dual Layer burn.  Also, I have an excellent spot in the video content that would seem to support a layer break.  I found the option in ImgBurn where I can select a specific "cell" to choose my layer break but I don't know how to translate an Hours:Min:Sec video position into a specific cell location to designate for a layer break.

If none of this is applicable please forgive me.  In that case I will shop for a new drive instead.  What's your opinion on these?  The LG claims to be able to burn up to Quad-Layer BD discs.  I will eventually move to Blu Ray discs.

Thank you very much for pointing that out.  The only thing I can say about that is I must have attempted the burn after updating firmware, but before restarting the tower.  I am attempting another burn now and this time the log lists the newer firmware.  Thank you for your patience.

Verify stage failed again.

The disc will play until the layer break, then freeze up the player. I've tried three players.

Based on this script I suppose I need a new drive?

Yes, I'd say the Samsung has had it.

Does your ihas120 drive not work either?

That drive did not work originally either.

However, after updating it's firmware I just completed the first successful verified burn with that drive, including testing playback in a dvd player.  I only checked the

section where the layer break was and a few minutes after to make sure I was definitely watching content on Layer 1.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to walk me through this problem.  This is an important project I'm doing for free for my kids high school.  It's a video of their

school play this year.  I recorded it in 1080p, and although I know it won't be in that resolution on disc I wanted to keep highest possible quality, hence DL discs were

necessary.  I couldn't go BD because I didn't feel like listening to parents whine that they don't have a BluRay player.

Here's what I've learned with this project:

Make sure the disc drives firmware is updated.---(And then restart your machine before trying to burn)

Don't assume that your drive will burn DL since it burns other media or files.  This problem drive has also had some issues burning Lightscribe labels.  I thought

that was a software issue.  I guess not.  I have learned through this that the DL focusing ability could be the first sign of a failing laser.  I'm reminded

of when I replaced the laser in my PS3 when it stopped reading Blu-Rays but still played DVDs.  Same basic concept I think.

I am glad that I was proactive, in a certain way, and started testing these burns before my deadline was here.  The extra time allowed me to learn this

           troubleshooting process with your help.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

And thank you.
