Confusion over "The drive only supports writing these discs at:"

Recommended Posts

I burnt Puyo Puyo Tsuu: Ketteiban for PS1 onto a Verbatim CD-R at attempted x1 burn speed to play on my MM3 modded PS1 and got the error message in the title along with "write speed miscompare" right before it. This is the first game I've had this problem with, and something I *really* don't understand is that the top window still said it was being burnt at 1x speed, even though other reports of similar issues i've seen on these said the program forced it into the lowest recommended burning speed (x10 on the packaging for me).

The GUI will always show the speed you've selected, even if the drive will have ignored the request to use that speed.

You've omitted the last couple of log entries where it would have showed the actual speeds your system/drive burnt at.

It's not the program which forces one of the other speeds, the drive does. I cannot override the speeds it's designed to work at.

I wish I could say I omitted them but they weren't there. Now I see though that it says the forced write speed at the end of this message:

W 22:00:23 Write Speed Miscompare! - Wanted: 176 KB/s (1x), Got: 1,764 KB/s (10x)

I see though, I'll look into a drive that writes at lower speeds.

Update with another problem, when I try verifying the disc I get 24 sector errors. Does that matter? What could be causing that?

This is probably the reason:

W 17:39:52 Note: The drive probably corrected the L-EC Area because it's wrong in the image file.

The image wasn't made properly and ImgBurn corrected it while burning it.  So, it burned something different.  That's probably the reason for the miscompares.  Whether this game disc will still play properly is up for debate.

Did you make this image yourself with ImgBurn?  Some game discs can't be made/burned with ImgBurn.  You may have to try Alcohol 120% Free.

I right-clicked the .cue file and opened ImgBurn through it. I'll try Alcohol.

I'm having trouble installing it. After restarting after the restart prompt when you initially run it, the install gets stuck on "installing core files".

This could be helpful. I tried installing it on my new computer (started with my old one because it has an internal disc drive that can burn slower) and Malwarebytes labeled the download file a Trojan. Is this even the right place? https://www.alcohol-soft.com/designzoo/downloada120fe.html

Update: I wiped it from my old PC and reinstalled it and now it just, installed. I'll update in this thread.

It says I'm unable to run the verification step (where ImgBurn points out the sector errors) because the image contains audio tracks, even after I merged them.

Wait, you merged the audio tracks?  What exactly did you do?  You shouldn't be doing anything other than reading in the disc to an image file and writing it out.  If you merged the audio tracks before in the image you burned in ImgBurn, that may be why it failed before.

I merged them with CDmage because Alcohol said it couldn't verify discs with audio tracks. They weren't merged when I attempted it in ImgBurn, should've specified that. I got my ISO files from Emuparadise with the workaround script, Namco Museum Vol. 2 Japanese version.

Alcohol shouldn't have said it can't verify discs with audio tracks.  Are you sure you specified a Game Disc to read in?  It's been a long time since I last used the software, but it used to have various default types of discs you could select before reading them in.

I still have my PS1 Namco Museum Collection Volume 2 North American disc.  I made a copy without problem.  However, I probably didn't use ImgBurn to do it.  That was 15 years ago, so I probably used something else like Roxio.  Or maybe even Alcohol.

I wouldn't necessarily trust the image you downloaded is good.  And who knows what this "workaround script" does and what it does to images?

I'm afraid I can't help you anymore beyond this.  Sorry.

Actually, now that I know you don't have an actual physical game disc, Alcohol 120% wouldn't have worked anyway.  I wasn't aware you had only a downloaded image.  I thought ImgBurn read the disc wrong for whatever reason and corrected the image on the fly.

That's probably why ImgBurn had to correct the image on the fly while burning it.  The image itself is faulty.

If you still have that failed CD-R from the first post you made, just try playing it in your machine.  It may still work, and what have you got to lose at this point?

Oh I have a pack of 50 discs (probably at *least* 10 of which have now been wasted) don't you worry. I think I've pretty much verified it was a faulty dump since I had no issues burning Germs: Nerawareta Machi from CDRomance's dump,
