(RAID)? I just want to burn a dvd!!

Hello,

I have gotten wonderful help here before and am hoping for some more. I am trying to burn a dvd, and am frustratingly uneducated. My error is

I/O Error!

Device [0:0:0] HP CDDVDW SU-208FB HH00 (F:) (RAID)

SCSI status: 0x02

Interpretation: Check Condition

CBD: 2A 00 00 00 00 40 00 00 20 00

Interpretation: Write (10) - Sector: 64 - 95

Sense Area: 71 00 03 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 73 04 00 00 00 00

SK Interpretation: Medium Error

ASC/ASCQ Interpretation: Program Memory Area Update Failure

I have found a thread with a similar error with (RAID) being the issue and a discussion of changing ports. I have vague experience with ports from a tech support job but not much. Is anyone able to guide me or understand what the error is telling me? I would greatly appreciate your knowledge lol

Probably has nothing to do with the RAID setup.  While it is unusual to configure optical drives on RAID, some manufacturers do ship them out of the factory that way.  Dell does.  I guess HP does, too.  I think it's related to using Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver as the underlying I/O interface.  Not sure.

Anyway, we'd need to see a full log of a failed burn, not just the returned error code in the dialog.  Open the ImgBurn log file.  Under Help, choose the log file option.  The .LOG file opens in your preferred text editor.  Find a failed burn in the log and copy and paste the entirety of that failed burn log, and whatever may be in the Verify part of the log if the burn completed and just failed to Verify properly.

I have a feeling of what may be the underlying cause, but I'd need to see a log of a failed burn/Verify.

thank you so much. Here is the log file. I hope I am not missing any info needed. If so, let me know and I'll provide anything else that I can

Found exactly what I was expecting to find.  This is most likely your culprit:

I 21:27:15 Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: CMC MAG. AM3)

CMC is CMC Magnetics, the absolute WORST manufacturer of optical discs.  50% of the problems we see on this board are caused by cheap CMC discs and the problems generally disappear when you move up to higher quality discs.

Try Verbatim DataLife Plus/AZO discs made by Mitsubishi.  NOT the Life Series you find in brick and mortar stores; those are CMC.  You can only find the good stuff in online stores.  Or you could try genuine Taiyo Yuden DVD-R.  Those are the top two quality disc manufacturers out there.

You want to know the real kicker?  Guess who now owns Verbatim: CMC!

Wild! Thank you so much. I had kind of learned this in the passed, but second guessed it. I got through half the stack of DVDs with no burning problems and was told I was lucky hahaha. I was hoping I was clicking a wrong setting or there was some step I was forgetting. Thank you again for the knowledge. Now to find a good deal on proper discs hopefully

Now, be aware there's no guarantee switching away from the cheap media will fix the problem.  It may be something else.  However, it generally solves most issues and it's where I'd always start with first.  Plus, you're better off in the long run using the higher quality media.  You'll have fewer playback problems with hardware and the discs will last longer.

I would bet money, enough for new disk hahaha, that you are right. My logs show me quite a bit of history. When I look at a successful log record from burning a dvd it looks relatively the same. The only big difference i can recognize is that when it tried to burn and failed, either I or the program chose to try again, and it worked. Hence the luck. Thank you very much!! Ill show the old log too if its of any interest:

About your previous luck statement.  That can be the nature with CMC discs.  You can go through a whole stack without issues sometimes.  Sometimes you get like 50/50.  Another problem with CMC is I had some DVD+R that burned and Verified correctly, but my DVD player wouldn't play them.  That's also the nature of CMC and other cheap discs.  Just because one burns and Verifies doesn't mean it did it "right."

I've never used those Verbatim DVD+R you showed, but they do say AZO on the package, which is one of the things to look for.  So, I'd say they're the good ones.

Be aware if you're using the LG WH16NS60 Blu-Ray burner, there is a compatibility issue with Verbatim MCC DVD+R and that drive.  They won't work.

There are benefits and drawbacks to using both DVD-R and DVD+R.  DVD-R is older so it has better compatibility playback for DVD players, particularly older ones.  DVD+R is slightly larger than DVD-R so holds a bit more space.  Plus, I don't think there's a write in lead in time on DVD+R like there is for DVD-R, so you'll shave off a little bit of time burning DVD+R versus DVD-R.

I used to use exclusively DVD-R for its compatibility with older DVD players.  I then switched to DVD+R for its slightly larger size and shorter lead in time, but CMC changed the formula for MCC Verbatim DVD+R and they no longer work with the WH16NS60.  So, I switched to Taiyo Yuden DVD-R, since the MCC Verbatim DVD-R had the same problem as their DVD+R.  TY doesn't make DVD+R with inkjet printable surfaces, so I had to go with TY DVD-R, which does.

Hello again. I made the switch to the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. I tried to burn a dvd and am getting similar issues. The first issue I had stated "Device not ready, incompatible medium installed". I read that sometimes simply opening the disk tray and closing it again is a solution so I tried that. As it was beginning to start, I received a pop up window stating that I "do not have sufficient rights to perform this action". I am not sure what that means. The errors I am now getting are:

I see the same error that was pointed out before  - Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: CMC MAG. AM3) - and am wondering if I may have miss-read the information on the disks I purchased and bought more CMC? They say CMCpro on the label. I'm thinking that is it and am kicking myself for not paying closer attention ffs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

No, it seems you got "genuine" TY media, as it says in your log:

I 14:35:33 Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: TYG02)

CMC bought TY a few years back, and changed its "name" to CMCPro.  I never tried CMCPro because of the poor reputation CMC has.  However, any manufacturer can put anything in the DID label field, and I wouldn't put it past CMC to fake it.

However, given you've had similar failures on different quality media, I'd be more likely now to think the drive is behaving badly.  Try getting an external USB burner and see if you get the same results with these discs.  If you do, you've got a problem somewhere deeper in Windows or a bad drive.  Could also be a bad SATA cable or SATA port its connected to.

I think it's probably my drive. A few years ago I killed my hard drive. I was told that from moving my lap top around so much while it is on, I killed the hard disk. I sent it to best buy's geek squad and paid almost $600CAN for a new hardrive (I'm sentimental to this laptop and didn't want a new one). Since I got it back from best buy, my camera doesn't work nor my dvd drive. I can't even watch DVDs on it anymore. I was able to factory reset the lap top once and get all of these features back except the camera. The DVDs I was able to burn still work. So a drive issue just makes sense with everything that's gone on. My hope was to get all of the downloaded TV Shows and Movies burned into discs and do another reset but now I need a new plan, possibly one with many USB sticks lmao. Thank you so much for the help!!!

Regarding CMCPro...

I use them for some time and burned a cake of 50 and some from another cake and no problem so far. I really like the glossy print.

I use CMC Taiyo Yuden DVD-R printable WaterShield White, Glossy, water-resistant in this drive

  • 5 months later...

I just got a cake stack of 100 of those CMCPro DVD-R off of Amazon.com.  They do say Disc ID: TYG03 and that was actually printed on the label.  For once, an optical disc manufacturer actually said who made them on the package!  :o  I'm burning my first one right now, but they should be okay.  The burn just now completed as I type and the Verify has started.  Verify completed.  DVDShrink read of a Panasonic DVD Video recorder disc that I copied from its 18 year old source disc to one of these CMCPro discs also passed.

So, unless there's some kind of problem I'm not expecting with playback, like the PS3 not recognizing inserted media or playing back with skips, pops, hisses, or pauses, these discs should be as good as the TYG03 TY's I've been getting off of Amazon.com as well.

I remember when they announced the aquizition, they acquired the whole line of production and the technology from TY and prommissed to continue the line and produce the same dye as was produce by TY, so that line become CMC Pro Powered by TY Technology.

I've gone through almost 50 of the 100 supply of CMCPro I bought.  No errors burning thus far.  And what few I actually watched all the way through played back without errors.  Most of these burns were discs I'd already burned nearly 20 years ago.  However, they didn't have inkjet printable covers and some were of lesser (And even bad.) quality.  Plus, many were Panasonic DVD video recorder discs, which cannot be read to ISO's natively.  But, you can copy the VIDEO_TS from them to a new ISO, burn that ISO, and can image that new disc.  So, many of these discs weren't watched because there was no need to.

@ianymaty  Thanks for pointing those out to me!
