Book Type settings are taking effect

I wrote a post yesterday looking for reasons why I wasn't able to change the book type settings within ImgBurn of my internal drive. I later found out that my particular drive did not support changing of book types. Today I borrowed a friend's external DVD burner and the booktype options were available. Problem is, after changing to the DVD-ROM book type, then burning, it's still came up as a DVD+R DL not the DVD-ROM. Needless to say this didn't work in my machine. Anybody know why it would allow you to change the book type (to DVD-ROM), come back with a "Success" box, then still burn as a DVD+R DL??

The burner I'm using is a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182D and writing to Verbatim DVD+R DL media and burning with ImgBurn

Just for clarity can you please put the disc back in the drive, open ImgBurn and copy paste all the info that appears in the window on the right ? Not the log, the disc/drive information that is in the top right window.

Also which setting did you use on the Book type tab to change that drive ?

Mmm the boss would need to confirm if that's the right tab for your drive as I don't know anything about yours..... as you can see and already know it's not working for you tho as the booktype is still DVD+R DL.

You did select DVD+R DL to change and not just DVD+R ??

Unless I've missed something, there is nothing on this disc, did you actually burn something to it??

That's the only way you'll see the book type change. After the burn.

The disc which is a DVD+R DL does actually burn but not as DVD-ROM. Also, I tried all the tabs for book type changing but only the Samsung's tab is selectable. That's why I'm guessing that Samsung is the tab I should use.

I was using the Samsung tab.

TSSTcorp is in fact the Samsung corporation so it makes sense that the Samsung tab will work (there are drives that although they say one thing, Sony for example its made by Lite On and the LO tab applies )

Look at LUKs post he says that Samsung sucks at bitsetting

do the players your trying to play this DL disc on actually support the +R format though ?

without going back thru otehr posts as well, is this the first attempt at burning dual layer or have you been able to play any burned Dual layer discs on you standalone players before ?

theres an updated firmware for that drive available, SB04 . your still on SB02

Thanks for replying. I feel like such a moron. There it was starring me in the face. I guess I was looking at the Physical Format Information (ADIP) line and not the Last Recorded line.

What I'm trying to burn to my DVD+R DL is a image of my Navteq DVD used in my car's navigation system. Reading other posts it appears that my RB1 nav system will only read DVD-ROM thus the requirement to change book types. I've burned 2 DVD+R DL with this image. One without changing book type, and one changing it to DVD-ROM. Neither are working in the car.

For what it's worth I have 2 versions of this navigation disc. One is about 2 years old, the other is the newest version. Just playing around I created an image of both. Once the ISO was written with the old version, 2 files were in the folder (an ISO, and MDS). When I made an image of the new version of this nav disc, again 2 files were created. I got the ISO but then there's another file called MD5SUM. No extension is listed with this file so I don't know what it is or whether it's important. Windows donesn't recognize it.

What is a MDS file? How important is it? Also, have any clue what this MD5SUM file is? It's only 1KB where my MDS file of the older version is 9KB. When attempting to burn a DVD with my old version (with the ISO and MDS), if I choose the ISO file within ImgBurn I get a message that I should have choosen the MDS file, that ImgBurn will choose it for me, and not to do it again. I haven't actually tried to burn this yet since I don't want to potentially waste a $4 DVD+R DL if it's only going to write a 9KB file.

One more thing. With respect to the firmware. I did see that the SB04 driver is available. When downloaded it came as *.bin file. How do I install this type of driver? Windows looks for *.IFO drivers.

Thanks again

Theres other posts in the forum about making a copy of a navigation disc and that poster didn't have any luck either .I dont think its the media or your hardware at fault but how the NAV disc is made and the protection on it that prevents it from working .I think we all thought that your problem was with video files based disc not a NAV one.I'll see if I can find it through the search function at the top of the page

what car and model is the NAV for there are different ones

Google NAVteq there are many articles on this particular dvd and I'm sure it'll help

Don't worry about the ISO / MDS file stuff, ImgBurn is clever enough to take care of it - and it certainly would just attempt to burn a 9k file!

The MDS (NOT MD5, that's TOTALLY different!) file is just used to provide ImgBurn a little more info about the ISO file. In this case, it's needed so that the layer break is in the correct place. Without the MDS file ImgBurn has no way of knowing where it's supposed to be, hence the MDS is very important.
