Invalid address for write error when burning double layer discs

I've been experiencing some trouble burning dual layer discs, getting a invalid address for write error. Maybe 1 in every 4 or 5 discs. Is this the error expected for just a bad disc? (I've read elsewhere that the expected failure rate for Verbatims should be about 1 in 20, not the 1 in 5 i'm getting.) Also, I always select the best rated layer break option (SPLIP=No), but have noticed that sometimes the only way to get a successful burn with a certain image is to use a different layer break than the highest star rating (Including using SPLIP=Yes). Could choosing a "wrong" layer break cause these errors? (Can doing multiple calculations before a burn screw something up?) I've posted the logs for 2 failures plus the successful burn below, each using different layer breaks:

Just curious, why are you doing those multiple calcs each time ? Also have you tried burning any of these discs at 2.4x rather than 4x ?

 

Mostly because I had tried earlier burns with a different layer break and couldn't remember which breaks I had already tried. Also, yes, I've tried 2.4x, and get the same problems. In fact, in the last couple of days, every time i've selected a layer with SPLIP=no, I get a write error. I wasted 3 dvd-r's trying the same layer break over and over with one dvd backup, and was successful the first time I tried a different layer (SPLIP=Yes).

Have you had the drive long ? Can you RMA it ?

 

I've had it just over a year, but didn't use it heavily until about 3 months ago, and didn't discover imgburn until about 2 months ago. Before that I used the nero software that came with it and never had any problems. By RMA it, do yo mean return it? If so then, no, I can't.
