It would fail. (just did not screen capture at that point)

This drive cannot set book type on DVD + R SL (with nec original firmware)

For DVD+R DL it Auto book types to DVD-ROM

This was not acceptable to me, the screen shot was to demonstrate wtf at having 500 changes available which i have never seen before, which lead to the scans etc for info on drive.

I flashed it about 2 Min's after installing it, on that note anyone else with this drive wishing to flash, boot into safe mode in xp to flash, also if connected via IDE knock drive into pio mode, if not either of these can cause a firmware checksum error, I flashed mine whilst in external via USB2 in safe mode.

It's in the sumvision USB2 only one at the minute.

You sure the combo one will not do 18x , I will swap it over later and try.

The nec will not work with dvdinfopro and seems difficult with cd/dvd/speed as a side note, that may be down to the firmware i have in nec though.

Swapped the drive over to the sumvision combo usb/firewire pl3507 still using usb2 though, ISO stored on a Sata hd

used the same ISO as first post and burnt it slightly faster in this enclosure, think 11 sec's faster

An update on this, I flashed drive to 1-02 as mentioned above and have tested various media, I have a few other writers that are capable of writing to ram disc's, The other drives and the panasonic ram media i got from Svp would only write at most 1.3X.

I was thinking it was down to Benq 1670 then i got pioneer 111 and it did the same, tried the Nec/Optiarc tonight and it did it as well, all these drives are in external usb2 enclosures using either prolific 2506/2507/3507.

Anyway they only way i can get them to burn at the max the disc does is to go into settings the Write tab and tick DVD-RAM / BD-RE FastWrite checkbox.

I then burned a few off and went to verify it failed with loads of mis-compares, etc, now several tests and flashes later i can tell you this, Dee's 1-02 1o1, 1-01bt can all write these disc's but cannot verify them, The original 1-01 which i put back in can write and verify them, using 1-02 to write and then flashing back to original 1-01 will verify them, So in conclusion I am putting 1-02 back as i need the ability to book type to dvd-rom this firmware offers over the original 1-01 which cannot set DVD+r SL to -ROM, as 1-02 can write but not verify the disc it has just written, however there is nothing wrong with the data it's just 1-02 has something about it that DVD-ram verification hates whilst using 1-02 (i know the data integrity is fine though even though it will not verify) Sorry if i repeated that several times. I hope anyone interested knows what i mean.

Actually I'd found the NEC's to be pretty shit at burning RAM discs with that 'Fast Write' option enabled, I don't think it's just you (or the 1-02 firmware). My Pioneer worked fine, as did my LG. Not sure if I tested my LiteOn. The NEC failed every single time though.

If the verify fails, the data is wrong - end of story! Of course you can double check by repeating the verify (via the standalone method) and seeing if the errors are in the same places. It *could* just be a flakey read but it's more likely that the drive didn't write the data properly.

Obviously DVDRAM does it's own verification during writing, the fast write thing basically enables 'Streaming' mode for the drive which has the effect of disabling the drives internal verification routines (and tells it to do whatever it takes to maintain a steady stream - even writing utter crap to the disc!). With the NEC, it's better to leave 'Fast Write' disabled and disable ImgBurn's verify - to save doing it twice! (you don't need hardware verify + software verify ;) )

with fast write off though i can only burn at 1.3 max on 3 speed media with all my Rams via Sumvision Enclosures (bq 1670 pio 111 nec/opt 7173a)

Also write with 1-02 fail verify, chuck original firmware back in, use same disc that 1-02 just wrote (eg not burn it again) and the verify completes without errors, chuck 1-02 firmware back in and verify against image and it fails which leads me to think flakey read with 1-02 or any of the modified firmwares)

Just verified the data on the panasonic disc that the nec with 1-02 firmware wrote and it verified OK on the pioneer 111 so it would appear the integrity of the data is fine, just cannot verify it with 1-02 in nec :D oh well it burns and verifies all other media i have burnt thus far and allows me -rom on dvd+r SL. Can live without verify on ram on there.

Yeah that's how RAM discs work. 3x doesn't mean 3x at all, it's all a big con! The only RAM with usable speeds are the 12x ones and of course we can't get 12x media here in europe, it's only available in Japan :(

Still, if you think 3x is slow, imagine how slow 1x discs are ;)

Sorry, I didn't get the whole 'not burning the disc again between firmware changes' thing. I wonder why they'd have messed with the read stuff?!

What I said still holds true though. My NEC kept failing the software verify when fast write was enabled- and I only ever have official firmware on my drives - the test results would be useless as 'real world' examples otherwise.

I can just add to this as Lightning UK! knows I had all sorts of trouble writing RAM discs with my NEC 4550A on1.08 fw. It couldn't even format the RAM discs..... :(

However the Pioneer was fine with them, formatted ok, not sure about the verify tho as my BenQ DW1655 doesn't seem able to scan them properly - need to get a Liteon to do proper scans on these....

In short if you want to write to these RAM discs avoid the NEC's until they sort them out.

The nec with the original firmware 1-01 is fine erases full/quick / writes to ram and verifies the disc no problems.

Anything written with any of liggy & Dee's writes fine, and verifies back on any other ram drive i have except the 7173a, unless i put the original firmware back in.

As a rule I only cross flash or use unofficial firmware when i have to, Eg the 4 SPD 2400 drives i had were shit when i got them and i could get no support from Philip's at all even though its got their name on bezel, I knew b4 i contacted Philip's though but you get nothing unless you ask and i was desperate to get a firmware for it or rather them as all 4 would write dvd-r without error but the disc's would not load in 2 of the 3 xboxes i have the 2 with samsung dvd rom drives hated them, the Thomson one would load them, on examining the disc i could see the lead in was not quite in right place, The liteon 1635s also had this problem, well it would do saying as it's the same drive, It took liteon quite a few firmwares before they fixed this issue, hence why i had no option to cross flash back to liteon 1635s (i like these drives now)

The Nec had no option either as i want to be able to book type single layer DVD+R to -ROM.

Cannot understand why any company that produces writers does not make this command standard as if i knew that say a liteon 1700 existed and wrote to all formats at top speeds and allowed full bit setting on all media allowable i would be banging on retailers doors to buy it.
