this is covered in the FAQS

to quote LUK

If the 'Reason' given is 'Access is denied' (or words to that effect)

Another program is currently using the drive. You need to find out what it is and shut it down!

The only way I know of finding out what else has a 'handle' open to the drive is by using Process Explorer from www.sysinternals.com

Load it up and click 'Find' -> 'Find Handle...'

The type 'cdrom' and click 'search'

See if it comes up with any results

If it doesnt, try searching for the drive letter of that drive - i.e. 'F:'

If it finds something, click on it in the search window. The main window should then highlight the process / 'File' entry that contains the handle to the drive. You can right click -> close the handle if you like, or just close the entire application, it's up to you.

BTW Ritek discs arent all that good

Also did you close out DVD Flick it could still be open and trying to access the drive

Polopony i can't close DVD Flick cause it has not yet finalized. I followed the instructions in the FAQ using process explorer to the letter, i found that "INcd" which is Nero's tool was holding it up. I uninstalled "INcd" when i tried to use DVD Flick again i got the same error. I was wondering could it be conflicting with Nero? According to the process explorer nothing else is using the drive.

not for nothing but we dont support anything but IMGburn ,you have me a little confused when you say you're trying to use Flick to burn and then you post a log of IMGburn ,cant you do what you want without flick by using IB's build mode

those Riteks are not very good we only recommend Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden discs

  • 2 weeks later...

I just updated the copy of ImgBurn in my Vista machine from 2.2.0.0 to 2.3.2.0 and encountered the "Access is denied" error for the first time when trying to burn an image to DVD. Is this significant? To the best of my knowledge nothing else has changed - same burners (2), same DVD type and manufacturer. After researching the problem in the forum and downloading Process Explorer, as advised in the FAQ's, without solving the problem, I pressed the "Continue" button in the error message and ImgBurn produced a perfect copy on one of my stock of Ritek DVD-Rs.

I think what may be significant is that Vista regularly irritates by denying me access to folders even though I am the sole user and administrator of this machine.

Hope this comment is helpful.

At least you got a succesful burn, I am sticking with XP Pro for a while yet until some of the annoying niggles with Vista are resolved - thanks for letting us know.

I've recently started getting the same problem in XP Home. As far as I can make out, nothing else is trying to access the burner. I pressed continue and ImgBurn carried on as normal. Strange.

Yes, 'Continue' is the same as 'Ignore' - meaning 'Ah, don't worry about it, just burn away!'. That's fine until something else tries to access the drive or sends the wrong command and you end up with a nice coaster.

You have to use Process Explorer to find out what's preventing ImgBurn from getting exclusive access over the drive - it's all detailed in the FAQ.

At least it's not a Vista exclusive. :sweating:

I could find nothing in Process Explorer to explain the warning.

Yes, I know. RTFM or in this case RTFFAQ :whistling: I only added to the thread because the topic was already open.

  • 1 year later...

I have been getting the same error, with "Access denied" as the reason. I click on 'Continue' to go ahead with the burn. I have created as many coasters as I have usable DVD's. The last one failed the verify process at 99% - so close, and yet so far. I have tested the ones that failed to verify, and they are indeed corrupt.

I never had this problem before when using XP Home and ImgBurn 2.4.0, but now am using a laptop instead of a tower, Windows Vista, and ImgBurn 2.4.2.

I have checked for firmware updates.

I get the same error and create coasters regardless of my media (have tried Maxell, Memorex and Verbatim).

I have read the FAQ, and every forum thread I could find, with no success.

I tried Process Explorer, which I have used for a long time, and found only ImgBurn when I searched for cdrom, and found nothing when I searched for the drive letter.

I tried using Unlocker, as suggested by Jill in one of the threads. Still, only ImgBurn showed up as having control over the device.

I even tried searching the registry itself for something blocking access or control.

In Process Explorer, I scrolled down through the processes looking for anything that even remotely looked like it might have a grip on my burner. I found two processes related to the HP QuickPlay program for watching DVD's, and found two processes related to MusicMatch. I killed them all.

I even opened up the Windows services manager and stopped any file indexing services, thinking they might be accessing my burner.

I still am getting the error after following a lot of suggestions, and trying several things on my own. I like to think of myself as pretty smart where computers are involved, but I am at a loss on this one. Frankly I suspect Vista is at the heart of my problem, but I can't for the life of me figure out how or where. Any more suggestions would be welcome.

Can you please repeat that with some decent media - you said you had Verbatim somewhere.

The L-EC uncorrectable error isn't going to be there because the program couldn't get exclusive access of the drive, it'll be there because the disc are just generally crap or the burner's support for them isn't what it should be.

Well, I don't feel all that intelligent, now. Since you brought it up, I checked my pile of coasters. Although I have written to all three media I mentioned, every single one of my coasters is Memorex (the media type you saw in my log file). I tried the same build with a Maxell disc (because they're handy, and the Verbatim aren't), and it verified fine.

So I guess Memorex has a new tagline: "Is it crap, or is it Memorex? We'll never tell, and you won't be able to, either."

Thank you for steering me in the right direction.

Although that still doesn't explain why ImgBurn can't lock my drive...

You know when you lock your front door with the key so its locked. Can you lock the door again once it's locked "NO"

Another program probably something made by M$ Like MP11 or another burning program that maybe installed a service has got a lock on your drive. Check FAQ and sysinternals to find offending program. Then get M$ to fix how vista works.
