hi and welcome to the forum.

there is a newer firmware here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2191

try HP16 and see if it helps

Hi there and thank you for the very quick response !

Firstly, this isn't my computer (it's my sister's) and I don't want to try anything that I may regret afterwards !

Her machine is way more advanced than my own (she is on XP I use W2000). Your download recommendation suggests using a floppy disk and this computer doesn't have one ! (the firmware suggests CD/dvds only for advanced users)

So, I a bit reluctant to try this firmware update with a cd in case I won't be able to boot the machine up later.

Any other suggestions you could recommend ??

Thanks,

Jez

Just download the firmware update to the desktop, and run it. Don't have anything in the drive when the firmware is updating. It's really simple.

Got nothing to do with floppy drives.

This may help, looks like the pics from the guide have gone walkabout but updating fw as suggested by both corny and blu is quite straight forward, post back if you need any help with it.

You may also do better if you cap the burn speed to 8x as well  but I would do the firmware (fw) update first.

Thanks everyone for your input, unfortunately, even though you've convinced me to go for the firmware update I can't get the update to work !

"Unable to create Bootable CD. Please use CD-R media only and try another Vendor. Please click yes to try again".

Originally I was using Verbatim CD-R, and then I tried a cheaper CD-R but still got this message.

So I can't go any further down the Firmware route unless I start using CD-RW or DVDs to create a Bootable CD and the creation software claims that this option should only be used by Experts (remember this isn't my machine and it doesn't have a floppy disk drive)

Finally, on here I've read something somewhere about WOPC (I think) and QSuite and disabling WOPC (though Lightning UK advised against doing this).

Any other thoughts ?

You don't need to create a bootable CD. Just unrar the file you downloaded to your desktop, then empty the drive and double-click the HS0E.EXE file that you unpacked.

Not sure I agree with you there. It needs to create a bootable floppy in order to do the update, I've downloaded the exe file, it's on my harddisk, I double click it, it asks for a media type and then it doesn't like my cd.

Anyway.......

I tried imgburn at the slowest speed 1x and it worked !

maybe for now I'll just see how I get by with this work around.

As I said, no need for a bootable disc.

Liteon's firmware upgrade instructions:

http://us.liteonit.com/us/help_firmware_odd.html

Make sure your drive's model name by inspecting the safety label on top of your drive.

Download the ZIP file with correct model name.

Please unzip the downloaded ZIP file.

Please close all applications under Windows.

Please make sure to keep power supplier without any interruption during upgrade.

Execute the firmware upgrade execution file.

Select the drive you want to upgrade (if you have more than one LITE-ON drives).

Upgrading (No power interruption).

Reboot your PC to see if the firmware has been changed.

Hi Guys and thanks for the help,

Re the screen shot, yes that is the dialog box I get, but "Follow on-screen instructions" means having to create a bootable disc. This isn't a step I have a choice over other than my preferred bootable media choice.

Anyway, since slowing the speed of the image burn to x1, I've managed to successfully burn all of my videos so it's fine (so far!).

I'll keep trying the firmware in my spare time.

Regards,

Jez

1x isn't even an option. If you look, the drive only goes to 6x.

I 08:20:30 Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: MCC-004-00) (Speeds: 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x)

Eh ?

That was when using AUTO, I have it on Manual now and it has the following choices;

1x,

2x,

2.4x,

3x,

4x,

5x,

6x,

8x.

I chose 1x.

Sorry, I guess you needed it in BOLD

I 08:20:30 Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: MCC-004-00) (Speeds: 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x)

Those speeds are the only ones your drive says it supports on the media.

So if you select 1x, it's just going to burn at 6x anyway because that's the lowest it can do.

Basically, if what you select is not in the list, the drive will select the closest speed to it from that list of supported speeds.

Oh and as you don't seem to know what 'AUTO' means, I'd like to point you in the direction of this guide...

I did say from the start that I'm not that technical (maybe you needed that in BOLD).

However, in future, don't bother trying to help me if you feel you need to be rude.

Can't please all the people LUK! Particularly when their cricket team has suffered yet another inglorious series defeat - this times at the hands of India, no less!

So, whereas standard Liteon drives can be easily flashed with a windows exe, HP decide that their "Liteon" drive can only be flashed with a DOS flasher! What's that all about? What average home/entertainment user these days is familiar with DOS!!

As the PC is probably out of its 1 year warranty, I'd probably use Codeguy's flashfixed firmware.

But if you still want to try the official HP way, apparently, as well as a floppy and CD you can use a USB pendrive to create the bootable "disc".

Hmm not sure why you were having issues with that firmware update, it says it can write to a floppy, a usb pen or a cd.

I ran it on my PC and then found the bootable ISO in my 'temp' directory.

I've attached it in this post, compressed as a zip.

Extract the zip and burn the ISO to a CD/DVD using ImgBurn.

Reboot your PC with the disc still in the drive and it should automatically boot the CD/DVD and flash the firmware.

Hi Guys,

And thanks for all your support.

I'll think I'll leave it as it is because it is burning the images at the slower speeds that I'm requesting it to do the burns at.

As said previously, it isn't my machine and it's doing what I need it to do for now (I only use this machine temporarily every few months).

Once again thanks to all, it really was appreciated.

And thanks to the author for offering such a marvellous piece of software - esp. for free !

Thanks guys.

Regards,

Jez

Please can someone help another newbie, it wrote about 91% of the dvd video but then failed

As said previously, it isn't my machine and it's doing what I need it to do for now

So failing at 91% is what you need it to do

Read my other replies - it's been working 100% (since I slowed the write speed down, as recommended by others).

The only trouble with that Jez is that it should have been ok at max speed. Slowing it down might be just enough to stop it erroring out but you've no way of knowing just how close to failing it still is or what the quality of the burn is like.

You shouldn't be worried about updating the firmware on the drive, it's just like installing some updates for Windows really - and I'm sure your sister wouldn't moan at you for making her drive better at doing what it's supposed to do.

I love doing firmware updates, done one already today actually on a brand new drive I just installed - a Samsung S203B. :)
