Can anyone explain what happened?

I was burning a movie using a Verbatim DVD+R DL disc and the operation failed. Rather than waste another expensive disc, I decided to try it with a cheapo single layer HP DVD-R disc and it worked. What happened and what can I do to keep from wasting discs? I am using a Sony DRX-830U drive that I just purchased a week ago and according to the manufacturer website there is no firmare update available. Here is the error log,

USB drives bomb out like that sometimes, you have to be 'lucky' and get a decent chipset in the enclosure and one that won't keep generating that semaphore timeout issue.

That aside, you appear to putting a CD sized image on a double layer DVD disc. Is there a specific reason for that?!

That error as mentioned above happens a lot of time with usb2 enclosure chipsets. Resulting in a 4 way conflict.

Drive/ Usb Enclosure Chipset / Usb Chipset / SPTI

You could change the drive in the enclosure to another brand (this might fix it) might still do it with the other drive

If your using an add in card for your usb 2, try using the motherboards usb ports.

Change the I/O interface in ImgBurn from SPTI to Wnaspi32 Tools/settings/I/O

[latest version of wnaspi32] ftp://ftp6.nero.com/wnaspi32.dll

Get the older version as well http://rapidshare.com/files/57649191/WNASPI32.rar

You need wnaspi32.dll to be placed in the ImgBurn folder if ImgBurn says not found copy it to system32 folder.

You might need to experiment with the above and sort of mix it up to find a combination that works.

If all the above fails try and get the elby I/O or the Patin couffin one.

(make sure the writer in enclosure is set to master) and thats about all you can do apart from buying a new enclosure with a different chipset but with no certainty that the new chipset will get on any better with your current writer or any future writer you buy.

Try and get an enclosure that uses Prolific PL3507 and a Pioneer 111 or 112 Should be OK as thats what I am using (however that is in combo with my motherboards USB chipset)

So do I need a different burner, one that is not a USB? What do you mean about a CD size image? I saved the movie file(pretty large one at 700 MB) to my Documents and pulled it from there to IMGBurn. Is this not a good way of doing it? I'm sorry if this sounds dumb, but I am very new at this.

a 700 MB avi is usually burned to a blank cd not a dvd

now 6 of them would fill a single layer dvd

,

Burning a movie file to a CD? Can I view a movie burned to a CD on my DVD player? Again, I apologize if I sound dumb, but up until recently I've only had experience burning songs to CD's. I don't know much, yet, about copying video.

try a data cd(imgburn build mode) with a 700MB avi, if your player is newer and divx/xvid compatible?

I have tried all of the above and am still getting the same error message. All I'm doing is wasting discs, so I'm probably going to return the DVD drive to the retailer and get my money back. Can anyone recommend a reliable external DVD burner? My laptop is 5 years old and it only came with a CD writable drive.

it's your laptop, external drives do awful when they are using usb1 interface?

in device manager under usb you would see an enhanced controller if you have usb2?

It says, "Universal Host Controller-2482", so I'm assuming it's a usb1. I'm planning on getting a new laptop soon anyway. Any suggestions as to which CD/DVD drive I should look for whenever I do buy one, or should I just keep the external Sony burner I just bought and use it with the new computer? By the way, thanks for your responses.

you would see something to this effect if you have usb2 on any usb port

adapters are cheap and make that older laptop usable

test the external on someone else's computer before the return date expires, might be a good drive

I wouldn't even bother with a dvd burner in a laptop, if they do burn ok, they break sooner

My laptop has a DVD burner and I rarely used that mainly because it was such a pain, every time the tray had to verify you had to be there to push the drive back in, so I switched and used USB enclosures with with DVD burner, it took me forever to get the right combination like which DVD drive it liked and would do a perfect burn with and then there was the drama of only being able to burn at 4X because anything else just lost the plot and on top of all of that you couldn't do anything else on the laptop at the same time, and my laptop was only new, so if you have a normal PC I'd buy a DVD burner and whack it in that  that's what I did and I have a lot less hassles now

I'm going to go with an adapter to usb2 and see if that works before I return the burner. I've heard from several folks that burning with a usb1 is big pain in the arse. I think that may be the source of my troubles.
