Hello there,

I've never encountered this problem before.

I'd like to mention that in both the times this problem happened, I was watching a video file fullscreen, I don't know, it might be related, coz between the two times it happened, i successfully burned one dvd without error and without a full screen video plays.

Also this drive have been working fine with my old pc.

Here is the log:

gigabyte sata 2 has always been jmicron before, probably same crap all over again

what's the driver version and date from device manager?

have you checked the burner in another computer with standard southbridge chipset support?

I have 3 storage controllers, I don't know which one is assigned to the writers.

And yes, I've been using this burner for a long time on my old PC with a standard southbridge, and it never showed this problem.

Also, the ide cable is the same old one, I don't think there is a problem with it.

There is meant to be an issue with the jmicron contoller and optical drives. I'll muck about on thurs and see if I get the same issue (Got that exact board sitting on the floor now). I think I have the burner somewhere too.

Keep us posted on if the new driver fixes that issue. Just out of interest does the error happen if you have raid enabled for control mode?

I did three things at the same time, one of them fixed the problem.

I installed the new driver (There is a SATA mode and an IDE mode in the driver installation, and both seem to work fine).

I changed the IDE cable.

I changed the firmware from a patched fm to the stock firmware.

One of those things did the trick, which one?, I can't say.

I've burned like 10 dvds afterwards to make sure it's done.

And I don't have RAID enabled.

Another thing.

I've bought this card controller but didn't install it yet.

Can you give me any feedback about the card and it's compatibility with optical devices.

If its extra IDE ports then go for one with the ITE chipset.

If its extra SATA ports for optical devices then grab one with the new Sil chipset.

If its extra SATA ports for HDDs then get anything that is does NOT have the Sil chipset! My personal preference is the Adaptec 4 port PCI-E cards, however 3ware cards are damn good or the budget option would be one from HighPoint (One of their tech guys assured me they do not use any Sil chipsets on their current range).

Thanks a lot for the insight lmao2k

Unfortunately I've already ordered this StarTech card with the jmicron controller for the extra IDE optical drives I have.

I'll try it and give you feedback, and if it wasn't any good, I'll grab one with ITE chipset.

You're welcome. If you do find that an ITE card is needed then this one from ebay will do the job. The prices of the card varies.

Alternatively if money allows just get a new batch of burners with the SATA interface, thats what I shall be doing for a number of reasons including that I can route the cables better!

Thanks cornholio7.

I still have some weird problem with the controller though.

One dvd burned ok but the session didn't close, tried it on other units and it showed as a blank, and couldn't close the session with nero either.

And btw, I figured what caused the earlier problem.

The patched firmware I was using caused the problem.

http://club.cdfreaks.com/f44/liteon-16a7s-...ware-new-207033

So

Liteon LH-20A1P + TYG03 + C0deKing Patched firmware + jmicron controller (Both versions) = failure.

The firmware enabled FastBurn + Enhanced OverSpeed + Enhanced Online HyperTuning.

I will try to find which one of those feature really caused the problem for the sake of research.

can you give an exact link on cdfreaks to where it says 20a1p and jmicron and patched firmware is a problem or even quote it

I don't think I've read anything on cdfreaks like that.

It's a conclusion if I may.

I had a problem, and did three things to solve it at the same time.

Changed the IDE cable.

Changed the driver for the controller.

Changed the FW to the stock firmware.

Trying to pin point the source of the problem, I hooked the old IDE cable back and burned 5 DVDs with no problem, rolled back the driver and also burned like 7 DVDs still no problem, and flashed the patched firmware back, burned one dvd and the next one gave the error again.

So I jumped to the conclusion that There might be a conflict between one of the features with the Liteon and the controller..?

What do you think?
