Advanced Settings Samsung/Plextor

MIG

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a Samsung SH-S202N and I am positively surprised by this drive.

Bit Setting works for +R and +R/W straight out of the box without any firmware patching.

Under Advanced Settings there is a read(?) speed setting called Magic Speed which can be set to High Speed Mode or Silent Mode.

This Setting can be visible changed by ImgBurn but is neither displayed in the log nor has any effect.

Verify always starts very slow until 10% is reached and speeds up then.

Turnaround times for verifying ~4.2 GB data are always ~6:00 min.

So how should these advanced settings work?

If you select 'Enabled' for the plextor one and hit 'Change', does it error out?

Not all the plextor drives let you change those settings. Also, it might be different commands for CD Vs DVD drives. I've only ever test it on the DVD ones (as that's all I have).

So you select 'Enabled', click 'Change', it pops up 'Success!' and when you close that box it still says 'Current Setting: Disabled' ?

If that's the case, I'll have to pass!

I don't think any of my Plextor CD drives support power rec but I'll take a quick look.

What happens if you change the setting in PlexTools and then view it in ImgBurn? (and vice versa)

Does ImgBurn see that you've enabled / disabled it in PlexTools? Does PlexTools actually see that it's been enabled / disabled if you close down + reopen the program?

Of course it's the pass case, I can enable/disable this setting always successfully but dialog and log always show disabled.

And for the PlexTools.. I must install these first..

Oh well, 2 perfect examples of marketing foobar..

because I already (temporarily) ruined my W2K installation with PlexTools I also installed the security hole called Adobe Flash to access the SamsungODD download page for MagicSpeed sic

--- Plextor ---

The original retail package praises the PlexCombo as follows

BurnProof

PowerRec II

VariRec

just see PlexTools screen shots below (ImgBurn correctly rejects AutoStrategy)

--- Samsung ---

From their site:

The recent ODD products supply the highest reading speed. They can read data faster than the highest reading speed, but the rotation noise and the possibility of damages (crack or bent) have increased due to its high rotating speed

To support a safe and delightful PC environment for users, Samsung has developed a Magic Speed algorithm and has adopted it to its new products.

What is Magic Speed Algorithm?

To prevent disc breakage when using a cracked disc, it drives the disc at a safe speed by setting the disc to reading speed.

In addition, for users who want CD reproduction at the highest speed, we provide a service of function that enables users to select reading speed they desire through MAGIC SPEED program.

MAGIC SPEED is a program that controls reading speed only for CD.

It doesn't control recording speed and reading speed for DVD.

Please change the mode after taking out the DVD disc. In case that DVD Disc is inserted in the drive, the mode will not be changed.

Conclusion

1.) May I suggest removing MagicSpeed for Samsung Drives completely because it can only throttle CD reading.

2.) For all other advanced settings a builtin white list for approved devices should be used.
