Philips DVD8701 - ISO image skips and freezes...

Computer: Dell XPS 600 3.2G HT Dual 2G Mem with Windows XP MCE 2005 (clean install)

DVD Burner: Philips DVD+-RW DVD8701 5D24 (ATA)

Media: Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 8x TYG02, label certified

Note: I believe the Philips DVD8701 is a rebadged BenQ 1640, imgBurn will allow you to do booktyping on the BenQ tab.

I was wondering if anyone can confirm this and maybe recommend a firmware upgrade?

I burned 6 DVD's with the same ISO file, 3 with Nero and 3 with imgBurn.

The Nero ones played perfectly on my LG 7832 Faroudja player.

All 3 imgBurn DVD's skip and freeze every 30s-2min.

Measures taken, before the burn:

- Clean install of Windows XP MCE + imgBurn + Nero burner software only (not the hole package)

- Uninstalled/installed the IDE/ATA Controller, in Device Manager (set to Ultra DMA Mode 2)

What do I need to do in order to fix the problem? I do not want to change the DVD brand, I used TY for a long time and they burned perfectly always.

Also, why we cannot see the other devices that you can burn ISO files with them... for example my first drive is a CD burner, second one is the DVD burner and the third one is Virtual CloneDrive.

Here it is the imgBurn log, that failed 3 times:

from over on the dark side!

The Philips firmware does not support PIF scanning, so you get 0 PIF errors. The firmware also does not allow scanning at higher speeds. This is why the scanning freaks here dropped their warranty and crossflashed to the Benq firmware.
Thanks, I cross-flashed it to a BenQ 1640 and got the latest firmware. Now I can scan using DVDInfoPro normally,

from your nero log, what was the setting for burn speed?

I'm going to cross flash the burner to BenQ tonight and do one more test on multiple burns.

Please let me know what tests exacly you want me to perform.

Links to software, also (not familiar with PIPO etc.)

Thanks for the heklp guys, we will nail it for sure, if there is a bug...

Problem solved. It's amazing how a good piece of firmware can fix everything. :geek:

The cross flash was successful, to BenQ DVD DD DW1640.

I also installed the latest firmware, BSOB. I must say that it makes a huge difference, in burn quality, not to mention the QTools...

After 2 burn comparaisons, it looks that imgBurn did a better job then Nero.

The first picture is imgBurn, quality rating at 97.67% and the second one is Nero, 97.65%.

I'm soooo happy now, I can uninstall the Nero software, that I never liked. :D

I totally recommend to all Philips DVD8701 owners to switch to BenQ model ASAP.

you don't see consistency like this very often, as LUK said the burning program does not impact the quality of the burn, that's a nice benq now!
