Slow Burn

my dvd burner is being really weird lately. I dont know why, but it isn't burning at the same rate it usually is. Imgburn takes 15 mins now when it used to take only 3.

Fast Facts:

I have Nero 9 installed.

11 minutes doesn't sounds as a 16x write speed to me. More like 6x and that is also what ImgBurn reported.

I'm not sure if Nero shows the verify part in the log. I'll check and return.

This is my test in Nero 8.

Nero is laying, it never burned it at the rate it tells you. :angry:

So you have the same issue in Nero as in ImgBurn. I had the same issue with my SATA writers on my ASUS motherboard. I ended up getting an internal SATA card instead.

not i'm aware of. maybe a windows update is the culprit?

i talked to an HP rep and they told me to uninstall nero 9. i havent done that yet, but i dont see how that will affect it anyway. then they told me to do a system restore, but there were only 3 restore points available - all within the past 2 days. the earliest one said that a windows update had occured (my reasoning for that as a possible issue).

Yes, I also doubt that Nero 9 is the issue.

Sounds more as there is an issue with chip set drivers or that you have a hard disk on the same channel that is slowing down the speed.

Maybe the drive is slowing the burn to 6x because you're using crappy media (notice it takes more than 2 minutes writing the lead-in). Try with Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden blanks, or at the very least, with anything that doesn't use CMC MAG dye.

They're both using the same ATA Controllerm just different ports on it.

I'm no expert in these graphs, but is looks as the writer is trying to get the speed above 6x and then suddenly drops (perhaps due to low quality of the discs) and then decides to stay at 6x, as that could be a 'safe' speed.

Another interesting graph would been to see how the verify line is behaving, but as you never verified it's not possible to see if the writer 'struggles' to read the disc during the verify part.

Shows a pretty straight read curve that ends at 6x, and at the same time the data on the disc is ended.

I think you should try to find some Verbatim media to rule out the media as the fault.

i will look to buy some verbatim next chance i get.

just for the sake of it i attached a file of a burn that i did with a sony disc (all previous burns had been on a staples disc).

beyond the verbatim discs is there any other advice you can offer as of now?

A 12x write that looks 'normal'. The only issue might be that the read (verify) graph is max 8x. It seems your previous issue with no write speed above 6x was 'low quality' discs related.
