  1. i'll keep the image copying in mind; so far I've never used imgburn to copy an image of the hard drive. Typically, when I buy a new pc, I don't mind having to reinstall essential software; I view it as a fresh start and a way to say goodbye to any unwanted changes to the registry, et. al., that might have previously wormed their way into my pc. Besides which when I buy a new PC, it's often about the time I'm transitioning to a new operating system. As indicated earlier, I'm not that tech savvy; just enough to ask newbie-type questions ;-)
  2. Dear Lightning Thanks for the comments. The off-site storage vault requirement precludes the use of the external hdd. It would be slightly more convenient to put it all on a 16 gb thumb drive [which I also understand generally has a longer shelf life than a dvd] but my impression is the thumb drive would choke on all the files (actually more like 20,000) and complex directory tree. Thank goodness for imgburn!
  3. May have found a solution to my problem. Found a full-height DVD-RW SATA drive on E-bay that's supposedly compatible with the Optiplex 760 desktop. Am still curious how backing up using imgburn and dvd’s compares with backing up to a usb thumb drive. Speed? Simplicity? Reliability? File structure and file name preservation? Any insights for the ignorant?
  4. I have about 10,000 files [roughly 12 GB in total] in my Dell Optiplex 760 desktop [Windows 7] that I need to backup once a month to some medium which is then put in a storage vault. On my previous computer I had used imgburn and backed them up to DVD’s. But this computer has a DVD-ROM drive and while there are replacement DVD-RW drives for half-height used by the small-form-factor version of the 760; the desktop version has a full-height bay for which I haven't so far found a DVD-RW replacement drive to work with the 760. Can I (and do I need to) use imgburn to write the files to a USB thumb drive? Or should I get a USB external DVD-R drive instead? Although I'm able to use imgburn I obviously don't understand the technology underlying it. Thanks in advance for your help.
  5. Thanks for the reply. I'll probably go with D&D, even if it is manual labor ;-)
  6. This is a basic question, so apologies in advance. I recently used Imgburn 2.5.7 to back up files in my Windows XP hard drive to several DVD’s. To get those same files to my new Windows 7 computer, is the best and quickest way to just drag and drop the folders from the DVD to the new hard drive, or is there a feature in Imgburn that allows me to transfer everything from the DVD with one click?
  7. * Ianymaty Thanks for the reply. As I mentioned in a previous post; my laptop windows explorer doesn't see any label either. I know that others have had a a similar problem [obviously with the multitude of people using imgburn, it's not surprising that some of us do have problems]. The idea that I type in a label and then imgburn "reminds" me within a matter of seconds that I haven't typed in a label suggests to me that perhaps imgburn is not doing its job "beautifully." As for uninstalling the the roxio software; does imgburn do everything that roxio does? It doesn't matter when you configure the label, before you hit the burn button or when it is suggested after the burn button is clicked. ImgBurn is doing its job beautiful. The rest is your system problem. Can you try the discs on other computer?
  8. * Well, I installed 2.5.5 and tried it again. Still the same problem. I've noticed that even though I typed the label, imgburn doesn't seem to accept it and soon after "reminds" me that I don't have a label [after which I type it again] and then says that the label has not been configured. Then, after the build is complete, windows explorer doesn't recognize a label. By the way, autoplay was definitely working. Should I use it? i.e., after I've put the DVD+R in, should I select “open writable CD folder using Windows Explorer”? I 08:01:30 ImgBurn Version 2.5.5.0 started! 9. * ianymaty Thanks for trying to help me with this. I was able to download the autofix and ran it. However I wasn't sure what to do when it asked me to "recreate" the problem, other than to reload the DVD. As far as I know, I have no other DVD programs installed, other than Roxio software that came with the drive. Note that neither does the DVD label appear in my laptop's windows explorer when I install the DVD on my laptop. Perhaps the best thing to do is for me to try first downloading 2.5.5; then to try building some more files from my HD to another DVD, and to see if I still have the problem. =============================================== Filter Driver Load Order - ImgBurn v2.5.2.0 =============================================== Upper Device Filter: redbook Upper Class Filter: [None Found] Device: CD/DVD-ROM Device Lower Class Filter: PxHelp20 Lower Device Filter: imapi Filter Name: redbook File Name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\redbook.sys File Version: 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2108) File Description: Redbook Audio Filter Driver Product Name: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System Product Version: 5.1.2600.5512 Company Name: Microsoft Corporation Copyright: © Microsoft Corporation. 10. Ianymaty Are you sure that link is good? I've put two other DVD's [a movie and a morningstar data DVD] into the drive and window's explorer recognized both of them with their name.
  11. * I can't get that little inset box to screen print [it disappears as soon as I hit the altkey] but imgburn seems to think the DVD has a label.
  12. I believe I cancelled it the first time because after I had already entered the label; a "reminder" came on screen suggesting that I needed to enter a label. So I started the process again.
  13. Thanks for the replies so far. If the label is working, then why doesn't the directory show the label? see "CD Drive (D:)"
  14. * I used imgburn 2.5.0 to copy folders from my HD to DVD+R in a system running Windows XP. I gave it a name "2011_03_05_WORD_AND_EXCEL" that I thought would allow it to be read by the windows explorer directory but it apparently didn’t hold; [PS; I've tried taking the DVD out and reinsterting it; the directory still does not recognize the DVD as having a name] how can I be sure that the label will be there after the build to the DVD+R? Is there any way to label a DVD after the build has already taken place? The log is below Thanks for your help I 16:42:39 ImgBurn Version 2.5.2.0 started! 15. * Spinner Thanks for your time and the advice. Geoff
  16. * “I have been a satisfied user of imgburn 2.4.2 on my previous Windows XP computer, using it once every couple of months to back-up thousands of mostly Word, Excel, JPG and PDF files onto DVD’s. Now that I have a new desktop PC, a Dell Optiplex 380 also running Windows XP, I am tempted to download and use 2.4.2 since it worked well enough for my simple needs. One difference between my old and new PC is the DVD drive, which device manager tells me is now a “HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GH50N.” My question is this: For my limited needs, will 2.4.2 continue to do the job? Which is the most recent version that has all of the bugs worked out of it? If I were to download that more current version will I have to learn new procedures for writing to disk? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this, Geoff
  17. I find it interesting that the default for "preserve full pathnames" is "disabled." Why would one not want to have the full pathname? I've had problems in the past with Excel files where the pathname was changed, causing links between worksheets not to work.
  18. Thanks; I had read the Wiki entry on UDF and it didn't seem to indicate any significant problems associated with UDF and DVD+R.
  19. I just downloaded imgburn yesterday and began to explore the program, in preparation for trying to copy thousands of files/folders to a DVD+R. When I clicked on calculate, as I was experimenting, I got the 8-level directory limitation error message associated with ISO 9660. Thus, the following questions: Does UDF also have an 8-level directory limitation? Can I choose to use UDF rather than ISO 9660? If so, where do I make that choice? Are there any disadvantages to using UDF, as opposed to ISO 9660? I
