  1. You'll have realised....I'm a slow learner ! It's the usual problem with having to absorb abd understand a large amount of new data - the log. The first few times you see it, it doesn't make any sense. In language learning there is a principle that you have to hear/see a word 8 times before you can use it yourself competently. I think the same principle applies here: you have to see a number of logs before you can begin to read and interpret them properly. The next time I burn a disc, I will follow the log carefully and try to understand the individual sections and lines. Thanks again for all your help...I feel much more confident using IMGburn now.
  2. That's terrific. I WAS multitasking while the burning was in progress so I'll make sure not to do that in future. What you say makes sense. Yes I saw the entry: 10:0941 Cycling Tray before Verify... but could not understand why the burning process then went back to the beginning. As I reported, when I put the dvd in to the tv, it played the film perfectly normally. So why did the process go on beyond simply verifying to starting again ? Should I have let it continue ? I will check the drivers as well. Thanks for the link and also for the comment about the buffers. I will increase the buffer figure there. Thanks again for all your advice. It really does help me to understand how these things work.
  3. I am duly reprimanded....yes I could and should have used Google (as I have done for many other things). But now to real problems...I have just tried to burn a ripped dvd using a Verbatim disc this time. When the burn reached 100%, the drive opened and closed by itself and started the burn all over again (to my astonishment). OK I let it go ahead but was then disappointed when it stopped some way through and reported I/O Error. 4. Thanks to you both. It's not Lightning UK's sentences I don't understand ISF God, it's the technical language. To take a simple example, I take it that 'firmware' is the new term for what we used to call 'hardware' as disticnt from software. But I don't want to bore you with this.... Your explication of L UK's reply is very helpful as you relate his advice in the link to which he points to the log I submitted, thus enabling me to work out what to do but also to understand for the future. It is all very well (and I don't want to seem ungrateful for the work of people like L UK) but my experience of experts over the years - and not just in the field of computing - is that their advice is often couched in technical language well above the level of understanding of the questioner. FAQs are often useful but they would be considerably more so if they were accompanied by glossaries. We have an excellent computer magazine in the UK (Computeractive) which has built a deserved reputation by (i) writing articles in plain English and (ii) by having a running glossary in every edition. Ah well....that's my gripe for today. I have now ordered some Verbatim discs as they seem to be recommended by everyone and the ones I have used thus far have been cheapies.
  5. Apologies, Lightning UK. I posted in the wrong place by accident.
