  1. I have imgburn running in Wine with 7.04 and no problems burning although I just downloaded it and installed it yesterday. (I had tried it over a year ago in Wine but did not install correctly)

Today it took a while to get it to detect my device, but it does now. One of the features I do like is the ability to change booktype. This was error ed out on me several times, until I changed the setting to ASPI instead of the Microsoft SPTI setting. This worked to allow me to change the booktype where before I go an error no sense information detected.

Just thought I would post this in case anyone was having troubles with the booktype feature in Ubuntu.

  2. What I have is an an hour long show that I want to capture or extract small segments of an actor to upload for their web site. Maybe about three to four 30 second spots.

I am having troubles with the programs that I have been trying.

Media player classic works the best for playback but the capture mode is grayed out. VLC does not allow smooth playback.

Arcsoft Showbiz seems to allow me most options however the only format for saving a project is in the .sbz format only known to the showbiz program. Figured out how to save the .sbz, seems many had troubles with the GUI as it only gave the .sbz option available to save as, google had a host of forums with this problem listed.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated and I guess the only way for me to have flawless playback is to get a video pci card.

    TIA

  3. Hi random - the second one you posted is the one that I found above too - looks ok and will mean I get to lose all the bloody cassettes etc !! :)

yeah I sure wish I had that one over what I have which is the first one, but hey I got it two years ago and it has been used little, I am not replacing it although I like the movie on the second one, really sounds like the way to go!

    Good luck on your shopping!

I did not realize you posted the same model, must be worth looking at, I love the quality of the JVC I have, so I am sure with the 20 gig hard drive that this would be a real nice one. I had purchased the Sony but returned it as I thought it was big and was not happy with the results compared with the JVC.

  4. I got a JVC a couple of years back, this one

    http://www.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MOD...d=26&page=1

Good quality video, size is great, much better than the Super eight Sony..... however I WOULD GET ONE THAT HAS A HARD DRIVE. This one looks good, check out the video at Best Buy.

This is the link to the video, almost makes you want to be like Mrs. Jergonson.

There is the link to my tests with that media ID what quality score did you get in the end Tom ? Also if you follow my link you can copy the DVDinfoPro settings from my pics

I do not know how to read all the graphics that are put up for different media and different tests, for example the link supplied by ifcrule1972.

Is there any way in these media reviews that the important things can be highlighted and discussed?

    TIA

  6. direct recording from scart socket to scart socket eg sky to dvd on HQ setting will be best quality. (1hour)

2 hour setting is OK as well.

Not sure if American stuff has scart euro connectors on but whatever the equivalent is.

front av is ok quality and a mini dv [firewire]camcorder would be best set up to use

I honestly think I am going to love this little toy!

I have to pick up q 4pin to 4pin cable but I got really good results from the camcorder via the camcorder to rca cable.

Back a while ago I picked up two firewire cards and stuck them in my pc along with the wife's. I have very little patience especially at the computer and since video has to be transferred in real time, it is just something I do not care to tie up my pc for.

The programs I used were Sonic, Vanilla Baby, Show Biz, and Windows Movie maker. All of these programs would either hang, crash etc. I also had Picture the default Sony bundled software. Both PC's have a 2.53 processor with plenty of ram but the onboard graphics card sucks but I do not do any gaming.

The possible reasons with WMM was I did not have service pack two back then. Whatever reason may have caused all these programs to hang/crash was enough for me to throw in the towel as I did not have the time to play around with it.

If for nothing else than to transfer camcorder video, this was worthwhile. Sure beats using the pc, at least I can get it to DVD and then edit in a much easier transfer method.

Last night in Vista, WMP 11, hard issues crashed my graphics (when trying to play a DVD from the Lite-on home recorder) but a re-boot straightened that out.

PS. I was surprised to see that Verbatim's were not on the list of recommended discs, the include list was huge including Imation but Verbatim was not there for any of the types of media.

  7. Well I got it home and I am going to have to learn a bit about it. For one I do not have a 4 pin to four pin FW cable, I have two 4-6 cables so I will have to get one of those.

From reading the manual, they say that it (camcorder) may not support recording thru the DV and so they recommend regular RCA video cables.

They also warn in the manual that the FW port is only for DV camcorders and not other FW devices like an external hard drive.

What is the best speed to always record at? SP I am not worried about getting extra mileage out of my DVD's. This will mainly be used for easy transfer of home video.

The menu system seems to be well set up, I still need to get use to it but I think I am going to like it.

I did record TV earlier when trying to record from the camcorder. I had it set up right first but then changed it to the front avi on the TV and recorded some bad news station. The speed was set to ep and was not the greatest quality. Anyways, I am now trying the camcorder JVC and hopefully the quality will be good, I set it to SP.

The unit seems to be well built, it is heavy, I have a Magnavox player, same size but it weighs like a feather.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

  9. My fingers are getting itchy, Best Buy has dropped the price on the lite-on down to $89.00.

I think if nothing else, it should make the transfer of mini DV tapes to DVD easier than doing it at the pc. At least it will not tie up my pc from being used.

  10. I am looking at getting a lite-on A100x

    large_DD-A100X.jpg

There is also a Magnavox 640 that is dirt cheap but I am going to pass on as it have no firewire DV link.

I have read where the burner is replaced in some of the home stand alone drives, that is why I included the picture. Not sure how a pc drive would fit this unit?

Any recomendations for a home unit?

    TIA

  11. I just downloaded the DVD speed, I had Cd/DVD spped but never installed it because I did not have the WNASPI32.dll so I just got the dvd version only. Should I get the 4.7.0.0?

Also could some post the levels for jitter etc, if they are posted elsewhere, just a pointer.

    TIA

  12. Can I suggest that you try 6.10 "edgy"? It loads quicker, new splash screen, most of the latest apps, support for multiple desktop environments, etc... (don't want to get carried away). I used a DVD+RW for installing (mostly because I have more of those lying around than CD-RW).

I think I may take a look at Kubuntu, if I can find time. I remember a few years back I have Mandrake 8.1, never could get the win drivers recognized, ah back in the dial up years.

  13. I have not tried running Ubuntu as of yet, but I did burn a CD at 6 x and it went rather quickly first time no errors.
