  1. An 80-year-old man went to his doctor for his quarterly check-up. The doctor asked him how he was feeling and the 80-year-old said "Things are great and I've never felt better. I now have a 20 year-old bride who is pregnant with my child. So what do you think about that?"

The doctor considered his question for a minute and then began. "I have an older friend, much like you, who is an avid hunter and never misses a season. One day when he was setting off hunting, he was in a bit of a hurry and accidentally picked up his walking cane instead of his gun. As he neared a lake he came across a very large male beaver sitting at the water's edge. He realized he'd left his gun at home and so couldn't shoot the magnificent creature but out of habit he raised his cane, aimed it at the animal as if it were his favorite hunting rifle and went 'bang, bang'. Miraculously, two shots rang out and the beaver fell over dead.

Now, what do you think of that?" asked the doctor.

The 80-year-old said, "If you ask me, I'd say somebody else pumped a couple of rounds into that beaver."

The doctor replied, "My point exactly".

  2. In the days of the Wild West, there was a young cowboy who wanted more than anything to be the greatest gunfighter in the world. He practiced every minute of his spare time, but he knew that he wasn't yet first-rate and that there must be something he was doing wrong.

Sitting in a saloon one Saturday night, he recognized an elderly man seated at the bar who had the reputation of being the fastest gun in the West in his day. The young cowboy took the seat next to the old-timer, bought him a drink, and told him the story of his great ambition. Do you think you could give me some tips?" he asked. The old man looked him up and down and said, "Well, for one thing you're wearing your gun too high. Tie the holster a little lower down on your leg."

?Will that make me a better gunfighter?" asked the young man.

    ?Sure will," said the old-timer.

The young man did as he was told, stood up, whipped out his .44 and shot the bow tie off the piano player. That's terrific!" said the cowboy, "Got any more tips for me?" ?Yep," said the old man, "cut a notch out of your holster where the hammer hits it. That'll give you a smoother draw.?

"Will that make me a better gunfighter?" asked the younger man.

"You bet it will," said the old-timer.

The young man took out his knife, cut the notch, stood up, drew his gun in a blur, and shot a cufflink off the piano player. "Wow!" said the cowboy, "I'm learning some things here -- got any more tips?" The old man pointed to a large can in a corner of the saloon. "See that axle grease over there? Coat your gun with it."

The young man went over to the can and smeared some of the grease on the barrel of his gun.

"No," said the old-timer, "I mean smear it all over the gun, handle and all." "Will that make me a better gunfighter?" asked the young man.

"No," said the old timer, "...but when Wyatt Earp gets done playin' the piano, he's going to shove that gun up your ass, and it won't hurt as much".

  3. I'm pretty sure these are all just 110 models.

As such, you can see how it performs by looking at the drives and media forum.

I still like the scanning stuff and advanced features that users can configure with the BenQ drives.

You are correct. The 610 is the retail version of the 110.

I too like the various features but one of my concerns is that there appears to be a problem with some of the firmwares burning DL discs and, from what I have read here, if you are using the firmware that seems to be the best BOSD (or something like that) the advanced burn feature needs to be turned off, at least to get good burns on DL media. I know that problem was, according to the post, on a 1640 but since the 1655 has not yet been tested there is no way of knowing if these same idosyncrasies are going to be part of it.

  4. I have read here and a few other places some things that are causing me to reconsider getting the BenQ 1655 drive. In searching various sites it seems that the Pioneer DVR-610B is a very good drive. I would like some input as to your feelings about this Pioneer drive (or a newer model if they have one).

  5. I have done many, many copies to DVD5 but recently have been trying to get a good DVD9 burn that will play in a standalone player with no success.

None of this points to ImgBurn as the problem but I would appreciate any help you might be able to provide.

It is possible that the stand alone player you are using is not set up to play either + discs or at least + DL discs. You could try bit-setting to see if that would work but what you might want to try first is, if you are close by a Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. to take the disc with you and try it in some of the newer DVD players to see if it will work in any of them. If it does then you know the problem is with your player and not the disc.
  6. I assume your a voting shareholder of Verbs by now? :D
    I wish!
Sorry about the luck, I would guess they'll replace this one also.
I am sure of it. I'll wait a bit to see if any other problems show up.

I did a re-burn of the information that was on the coaster (from the original source) and this time things went OK.

  7. After more than 450 - 500 good burns on the Verbatim +DL media I have finally made a coaster. I had a supposedly successful burn crap out at the 52% mark while verifying. I ran another verify with DVDInfo Pro and it stopped at the same 52% area.

Since I have a problem with one of my drives reading past the layer break I wanted to make sure the same thing was not happening to the other drive. I ran tests with DVDInfo Pro on several other DL discs and they showed no problems. I then put the coaster back in and, the test again, could not get past the same 52% area.

So I do not mislead anyone I want to clarify that while this is the first coaster, I have had a few minor problems with the Verb + DL discs.

I did have 3 or 4 discs that each had a scratch about 3/4" long on the label side. I was told by Verbatim that the scratch was probably created by the mechanical arm that lifts the discs. I also had 2 discs, in a row, that verified OK until they got to the the very end (99+%). These 2 discs played OK and I was able to verify them with no problems past the initial verify. Verbatim replaced all 5 or 6 of the discs. They also provided me with a pre-paid label to ship the defective discs back. All of those problems took place during the first 30 to 40 DL discs I purchased. Since those problems I have had more than 425 - 450 +DL burns with no problems.

  9. I have Nero 6.3 Installed (it came with the Sony drives). It has an old version of CD-DVD Info (2.something). I have just downloaded the latest version (4.10). Will this version work OK within my current version of Nero?
