Write speed drop off

(I've started a new thread as the previous one was originally about media/drive compatibility and have since resolved the issue.)

Thanks LUK, i did as you asked from the other thread and have run 3 burns (all successful btw). The first one was done with my L/top running in what i would call normal state, ie anti virus running, internet connected and all the usual behind the scenes stuff.

The second burn was the same ISO file as the first but this time with all non essential programs/app's shutdown as i did before.

The third was a different ISO file and again with all non essential prog's/app's shutdown. I have a log of the first two but as all were successful i don't know if it is necessary.......

Sorry guys, I've just checked the log file for the above mentioned burns (1 & 2 )and it seems i f***ed up somewhere. I'm going to run the burns again and see if the results differ any...?

Please forgive my stupidity

Assuming this is with the beta 1.2.0.4, it looks like you're still having problems with your hdd not keeping up (laptop hdd's are often pretty slow). You really must keep a very close eye on the buffers when you're burning. Just keep a mental note of when they drop off - oh and I'm talking more about the 'Buffer' rather than 'Device Buffer'. That is of course unless 'Buffer' is ALWAYS at 100% and just 'Device Buffer' goes mad. If that's the case, there is a problem sending data over the usb interface.

It might also be an idea to perform a verify afterwards so we can see how that goes - it adds another couple of lines to the graph.

Sorry LUK, these were with the v1.2.0.0, only when i checked the log did i realise. I followed jmet's guide to set ImgBurn to open with DShrink, so it automatically burned with that version.

Here are the latest attempts done with the beta, didn't verify the first (sorry) but did the others....

#1...Write in normal running mode (all processes running)

(sorry didn't save the log or verify)

Assuming they were all done on your laptop, looks like you need to burn with those non essential apps turned off then!

I guess those apps are either stealing too much cpu time or are accessing the hdd quite heavily at some point and it's causing the burn to slow down as the drive drops it's speed down a level or two.

Number 1 should have shown some activity in the buffers at around the 40 - 50% complete mark. Do you remember anything?

Damn you're good....LoL, i did note down the drop off was at 48% on #1. I had task manager in the system try keeping an eye on the cpu usage and i do not remember it spiking at any point.....Any way what you suggest is a small price to pay until i upgrade to a new desktop.

Off topic, should i revert back to using the v1.2.0.0 or continue using the beta....?

Thanks for all your help LUK.

Cheers LUK, i have one question. As i said, after running D/shrink ImgBurn opens automatically ready to burn as i followed jmet's guide to do so. This opens v1.2.0.0 and not the beta, to open that i have to use the desktop icon. Do i need to uninstall both versions and then re-install the beta and again follow jmet's guide to configure it accordingly, i'd have thought the old version would have been overwritten by the new one..?

Forgive my lack of knowledge in the programing department :( , I'm doing my best to learn this as we go along.

Thanks again.

is the drive connected by USB or USB 2.0 ?

running thru firewire ( slightly slower than USB2.0 ) from a laptop to an external drive i can acheive 8x max regularly, HOWEVER , due to a laptops hdd being a lot slower than a normal desktop set up ( as mentioned previously by the Guvner) , the average write rate drops down to around 5x .

my suggestion would be to write at 6 x and see what differance that makes for you

Hi volvofl10, It's through USB 2.0, i still can't complain as my burns are averaging around 10 minutes even with the drop off, but i shall take your advice and try running at 6x to see what results i get.....

Cheers.....
