'L-EC Uncorrectable Error' and 'Waiting For Device To Be Ready ' problems

Hi !!! For the past 2 months, I've been using my burner with ImgBurn 2.4.2.0 to burn DVD+R DL quite often, roughly about once a week. In that period, I've done roughly about 15 burns until today. The 1st 10 burned and verified SMOOTHLY without any error message.

The next 5 goes like this :

-Burned fine verified fine BUT before verifying, ImgBurn ALWAYS give me L-EC Uncorrectable Error message at right about 50% or 51% of the verifiying process, in the 11th, 12th and 13th burns, BUT I always just click TRY AGAIN and it continued the verifiying process without error message anymore. My first thought was dirty lens, making me put a lens cleaning disc before 14th burn and I updated the firmware also just in case.

-The 14th burned with NO error message.

-Before 15th burn, I got some spare time so I decided to take the burner apart (I've done this before) to clean the lens with a cotton bud and Johnson's CLEAR for Electronics (I know I should have used 70% alcohol but I'm out of those and I've used CLEAR as a substitute before without problems). And then I did the 15th burn today. Burning process seems fine but the disc won't even start verifying. ImgBurn just give me a 'Waiting for device to be ready' and it won't start to verify. And the burner sounded like it can't read the disc.

I'm using Verbatim DVD+R DL MKM-003-00 for all the burns above.

I opened my tray and closed it again to see if the verify would start but it wouldn't. It just wouldn't start to verify. BTW I looked at the written side of the disc and it seems a little odd unlike previous burns. I'll try my best to describe it : it has a thin ring at the inner circle of the disc and another thin ring at the outer circle of the disc. I hope I describe it right.

And here's the log for the 13th burn with the L-EC Uncorrectable Message showing up only once about 50% through the verifiying process :

My questions are :

-Is my burner's lens dying ??? Should I get a new drive ??? My burner is a SONY DVD RW DRU-720A manufactured in 2005.

-If not, what is the cause for the 'L-EC Uncorrectable Error' message and the 'Waiting For Device To Be Ready' EXACTLY ??? Could this situation be improved ???

Thank you very much in advance for your kind help.

If the burner has suddenly problems to burn/read quality media it sounds to me as a clenaing disc for the lens would be a good try.

Now it seems your burner has a hard time reading what it just burned.

Thank you very much for ur immediate response, Cynthia :)

I DID cleaned it with a cleaning disc (the one with brushes) after the 13th burn AND the 14th burn is SMOOTH.

Until I took my spare time to open the burner so I could thoroughly clean the lens with a cotton bud and Johnson's CLEAR for Electronics.

Then the 15th burn is a coaster. Actually I don't know if it's coaster or not coz I couldn't get it to verify ???

I did SUSPECT that I shouldn't use the CLEAR stuff but I ran out of 70% alocohol and I cleaned with it before and there's no problem whatsoever.

How's that ???

Sorry, forgot that you had cleaned it.

It sounds as a dying burning. Perhaps better to get a new nice drive.

The first sign seems to be that it has hard time to read the disc it just burned as it can't start the verify stage.

I will try to clean it again tomorrow manually, this time with 70% alcohol. And I will try to burn again but I don't wanna waste another DVD+R DL as they aren't cheap.

Would burning DVD-R do fine for the sake of a test ??? If it burns and verifies smoothly, can I safely say I'm back in business ??? So I can move on to burn another DL ???

As your issue seems to be in the verify part, you could first use the Verify mode and just test if that one can read the disc without issues after the new clean.

OK, will do. Just the 15th burn ??? Should I try to verify a known good burn too ???

Assuming you still have the images left, try with some that couldn't be verified.

Actually the 14th and the 15th burn were done today, the 14th verified but the 15th wouldn't right after I decided to clean manually in between 14th and 15th. Unfortunately, I just remember that I've deleted the 14th image so I cannot verify with it. As for the 15th, I'm pretty much sure that it's a coaster coz my windows explorer is having a hard time reading it when I put it in.

Could I just test burning again with a DVD-R after the new clean ??? Just to see if it verifies ??? And if it verifies, is it OK to burn DL ??? Because my guess is the reason it won't verify is because the 15th is indeed a bad burn which happened because there are a thin layer of residue on the lens, of the cleaner I used instead of alcohol. Has this happened before ???

Normally it's a bit trickier to burn a DL as you have two layers, but it would at least indicate if you can burn a single layer without issues.

So is this a green light to burn a DL ??? Thank you in advance 4 ur response.

Your burner is old and has very poor support for the 8x rated DVD+R DL blanks you're using: notice it only supports burning them at 2.4x speed. Burning those blanks on that burner will be a lottery. A new burner by Optiarc, Lite-On or Pioneer (not the 118/218 models) should do good burns on that media.

Oh, and update ImgBurn too.

Thank you very much for your response. Yes, I am aware of the fact that my burner maybe is pretty old already by today standards. But I'm intending to see the full life of it :) If u read my problem, u will notice too that I had a pretty good winning odds if burning is a lottery. I realize that the odds is not 100% and I realize I'd be getting 100% with top quality burners u mentioned. But this is a learning experience for me.

I need to know what exactly causing my problem as the problem is very unusual. I burned and verified 14 DLs straight without problem but the last 3 give me a L-EC Uncorrectable Error message right about 50% or 51% which I always click TRY AGAIN and resumed the verifying process without error message anymore. Isn't this intriguing ??? I need to know if only cleaning is needed. If it takes only cleaning then I could see the very end of my burner's life and not having to kill a mosquito with a shotgun :)

I did clean the lens and the 14th is verified without any error message BUT after that in my spare time I decided to clean it manually by disassembling the drive (I've done it b4) then suddenly the 15th is a coaster, prompting me to seek an answer or confirmation from experts here :)

Today I disassembled the drive and clean the lens again. I burned a single layer as a test and it went well. I want to proceed to burn a DL but being prudent I'm looking for confirmation first from this forum as DLs aren't cheap :)

I did set my eyes on Optiarc AD-7240S. Or maybe you could give a recommendation ??? Thank you.

No one here can give any confirmation to you as this is a problem between your burner, its firmware and the media you're using. The burner is probably using a generic write strategy that may have had worked before but isn't working now, and you do know that each DVD+R DL disc isn't exactly the same as the other, right? That's why proper support for the media is a must, so that the burner knows what to do when the writing quality isn't what it should be.

The Optiarc AD-7240S is a great burner and I'm also getting one in the very near future :)

Well I'm using Verbatims and I'm pretty sure it's not the media plus I've already updated the FW. My drive's maybe old but I don't burn in a fixed regular manner like maybe a lot of people in this forums do. So I'm pretty much sure my drive still has a long way to go :) Which is why I'm looking for explanation from this forums. My common sense for troubleshooting would be simple trial and error by testing burning DL again when burning single layer succesful after I cleaned the lens again. I guess I'm pretty much on the right track, aren't I ? :)

ImgBurn ALWAYS give me L-EC Uncorrectable Error message at right about 50% or 51% of the verifiying process,

Might be that the burn is not good around the layer switch. Sometimes the reading works and sometimes not. Even if it works, your disc could look like this. (Red and high values are not good.)

This file could give an indication on how hard/easy the burner has to read the different parts of the disc.

There is a significant drop in the read speed after they layer break, could very well indicate the burn is not very good at that spot and it has a very hard time reading the burned sectors in that area.

So what caused it ??? The burner or the media ??? Just to remind u, the IBG u asked 4 is BEFORE I cleaned the lens.

Here is the IBG for the 14th burn AFTER I cleaned the lens and NO ERROR MESSAGE :

Using another spindle of discs would indicate if it's the burner or a bad spindle of discs.

After burning single layer succesfully yesterday, I'm proceeding to burn another DL (from the same spindle BTW) which will be the 16th burn. I will report back and upload the IBG and PIPO scan. Just like u said Cynthia, I'm considering testing another spindle for 17th burn regardless the outcome of the 16th burn. Thank you very much for ur help :)

Hi Cynthia !!! I've just finished doing the 16th burn. It burned and verified WITHOUT error message just like the 14th. But comparing the IBG and PIPO scan, this is very weird. The 16th's IBG is better than the 13th while the 13th's PIPO scan is better than the 16th. Doesn't it should be the better the PIPO scan the better the IBG ???

Anyway please check the log, IBG and PIPO scan for the 16th burn below :
