A temporary solution - What I've noticed

Hello, newbie here! :)

And of course before I start: IMGBURN is EXCELLENT!

Well space on my external HD was getting tight, I copied a lot of DVDs (especially dual layers), and I had no choice but to burn them. Since I was hard pressed for DVDs I gave in and bought TDK +R DLs. Yes yes I know, bad bad VERY bad, but I had no choice. I see this as a temporary solution until I can get Verbatims and copy them over to the Verbatims. Interestingly enough I haven't had any issues WRITING and READING these discs on my LG super-multi drive (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20 2.00).

Just as an example:

Anyways though my set top dvd player doesn't like these discs. What I do find interesting is that the burner itself can read any DL disc I have burned just fine. I guess the pc dvd drives are just better than set top players somehow?

Online is always the way to go, however now I am noticing that even the quality of Verbatims (through reviews) can on rare occasion be hit-or-miss. This due to the fact that where the discs were manufactured, usually India or Taiwan would be the issue.

It is interesting also that for optical media for the most part Taiwan sucks, yet hardware such as burners(?) are actually decent? Why is that?

Rincewind;

 Computer drives follow a strict set of 'computer logic' and don't care where the data comes from as long as it's readable; whereas the algorithm in the dvd players are written by manufacturers and have to conform to the dvd industry standards and not computer manufacturers standards.

Different industries...why do apples and oranges taste different I guess.

I, too, have used the TDK Ritek DVD+R DL discs with no problems reading and verifying. Haven't tested them in a player yet. Like you, I used them as an expedient means until I could get a hold of Verbatim.

As far as Ritek goes, it's apparently a country specific thing. While not the best media, Ritek in America is apparently a far different beast as far as quality goes than Riteks in Europe.

Well you might have better luck, depending upon if you have a REAL quality DVD player. I unfortunately have cheapo players, a Polaroid player, and a vcr/dvd combo player (Broksonik).

Actually my Polaroid player handles *most* +R DLs ok. Verbatim and Memorex, but it doesn't like these ritek discs.

The only 'saving grace' about my Polaroid player, is that I easily found the region unlock code, and it has an option to change from NTSC, PAL and PAL60, so whenever I run into a PAL formatted disc, I switch to PAL60, and I get a normal image, no black & white jumping around image.

So which one is better Ritek Europe or USA variant?

I also wanted to buy the Tayo-Yuden discs, since I heard those are very high up there in quality, but to my disappointment, they don't seem to produce any DLs, strictly SL only. :(

-edit

Well I'm eating my words now. There are some available, but only -R not +R , and very little media.

I only know of the European versions from what gets posted here on the forums. From that and my personal experience with the US version, the US version appears to be of better quality. But, I'd still get Verbatim +R DL's whenever possible.

Actually, I had wondered what happened to the picture of Bob. I was checking on this thread the other day and there wasn't the expected picture of Bob, for some reason.

I think I first encountered Bob and the Church in Robert Anton Wilson's fake screenplay book Reality Is What You Can Get Away With, one of my favorite books.
